The resort was great. I went with my husband and two kids, and met his parents, my parents, my sisters and their families. There were 17 of us total. We all booked through expedia. Expedia says they do not charge for changes or cancellations. However to be safe, most of us purchased the travel insurance. Two people were unable to go. One of them had travel insurance. After over 3 and a half hours on the phone, over 4 different phone conversations, no refund is available. I paid 1000 per person for the trip, and am out of luck for the one person that did not go. As far as the resort goes, it was fantastic. The staff was courteous, and helpful. I read some complaints about it being warm in the rooms. Air conditioners can only do so much, and if you go in July, you have to expect it to be warm. The food was what I would expect at the buffets, but the two smaller restaurants had food that was phenomenal! There were activities for all age groups, we travelled with a family from the ages of 5-70, teens included. We are already discussing booking our next family vacation, but will not be using expedia next time.

Room Tip: The first rooms are cooler. We were in building 19, which was very close to the beach, relaxation pool, and activity pool. We loved it! It was a long walk to the lobby, where breakfast and dinner are served, but that is only twice a day. We could easily run up to the room throughout the day.

This hotel must be run by boneheads. Imagine a stunning garden like atmosphere, a lovely stretch of beac that offers an evening sunset in IMAX proportions...and everything that is lovely and beautiful is closed down at 6:30 PM in favorof one of the worst lit, least air conditioned dining rooms I have ever been in - think East Block 33 watts; hot so you don't really want to try too much of the mediocre food; a bar and lounge area NO ONE wants to sit in because it is too hot; all the while remembering that the beach front restuarant which opnes at 12 CLOSES at 4:30pm.

Did I mention the advertised tennis courts that are never used? The fact that there are ads for lessons on the doors of these courts yet not a single hotel employee knows a damn thing about anything other than to offer you a racket and balls?

The place is a disaster but so fixable that womever is actually in charge should be fired or better still demoted to work in a hotel that actually makes an effort to treat its clients with the respect and the services they deserve.

Room Tip: higher floors: nice to be in the tree tops.

I visit the Occidental several times each year. I keep returning because of the beautiful setting and the amazing staff. I often visit with friends or take some or all of my company team members.

The staff at the Occidental works tirelessly to serve its guests. Cozumel is our favorite romantic and family getaway. Our most recent trip was for family vacation. One thing that makes us feel comfortable when traveling outside the USA is that the Occidental has a doctor on call. We've often had instances where we needed a doctor for an ear infection, fever, eye infection, etc. We call the concierge and within minutes, the doctor calls our room and makes an appointment to meet us at the infirmary or even at our room. He is great, speaks great english, is even certifified to work in Texas, and his availability really makes us feel more comfortable traveling out fo the country.

The setting is beautiful. The beach is great. The food is great for all-inclusive. The snorkeling and scuba are amazing. The staff is the best.

Room Tip: spend the extra for the Royal Club and book at many a-la-carte dinners as you can.

I stayed here a few weeks ago on a group dive trip.

If you know a few things ahead of time and expect them you stay will be better.

1. The ride from the airport is stupid expensive per person.
2. Your room will not be ready on time.
3. Dress for the beach because when you arrive you should go there to wait on your room to get ready.
4. The beds and pillows are like sleeping on the floor at Wal-mart. Bring your own pillow!
5. The air conditioner only kinda works.
6. The food is buffet style. Its not great. Its not terrible.
7. There is alot of walking at the resort. It is long and narrow. Breakfast and supper are served up front. Lunch is served down by the beach.
8. If you have ever seen the movie "A Time To Kill" and notice how they always have this fine sheen of sweat. That's how you will be the whole week.
9. Bring a roll of 100 dollar bills for tipping.
10. The internet is a joke. 80 bucks for the week for room wifi and you can only connect 1 device to it a time.

I say all all of this and I would gladly stay here again. The staff is super friendly and hard working. The grounds are very well kept. I somehow wound up with nachos on my plate every meal...even at breakfast. A couple of the shows at night were fun. We really liked the fire show. There was daily entertainment for the kids which was nice and kept them for being bored. I mean you are in Cozumel. How are you even bored? There are big lizards and crocodiles around the resort. We even had some sort of crab living in the wooded area outside our balcony. Nice tropical feel. Un cerverza por favor!

Room Tip: Bring your own pillow. Don't stay on the top floor.
