Playa San Martin on the far side of the island. Rolling waves, wide sandy beaches (the waves are great for body surfing or bogie boarding, and the area is not strewn with rocks and boulders like almost every other beach on Cozumel). Playa Martin is a world class sandy beach, unlike anything else on Cozumel. We felt safe with our 5 and 7 y.o. kids at this beach. The waves were gentle and consistent. There were only a couple of other groups there. The cruise ship Jeep safari tours just passed right on by (yippee!). Food and drinks (and bathrooms) are reasonably priced at the Diablo restaurant across the road from the beach. There is also a trinket shop there with better prices than in downtown Cozumel. They even have a life guard station here (the restaurant owner said he pays to have lifeguards at the beach). I snorkeled out past the surf break. I did not experience any treacherous currents or other threats. I did not see many fish, but I saw several sting rays.

We stopped here on a jeep safari. We had a good meal and time for play in the beautiful water. It's very undeveloped here which adds to the charm.

Visited Playa de San Martin with my family in December 2007.
Like most of the beaches on the Eastern side of the island, the appeal of this beach lies in its undeveloped and lightly frequented nature. It is a wide beach with plenty of light sand allowing for visitors to spread out and enjoy themselves. The surf is a bit rough, so if you visit with young children, monitor them carefully to make sure they stay out of trouble. There are two lifeguard stands along this stretch of beach that were manned when we visited.

There are no beach chairs available, so be sure to bring your own if you need them. A small cantina across the road will supply cold drinks, chilled coconuts and, I believe, food at a reasonable price. I cannot comment on the food quality, as we headed south to Coconut's for lunch.

On the day we visited, Playa de San Martin was the widest and most comfortable strip of beach to be found on the East side of the island and a welcome relief from the hoardes of cruisers overpopulating the West coast. I'd recommend it highly.
