“25th Anniversay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2013

We traveled to Secrets Aura Cozumel April 20-27th for our 25th wedding anniversary. We have traveled to Secrets Silversands and Secrets Huatulco in the past 3 years and love the Secrets service and luxury.
We always book through Apple Vacations. When we arrived at the airport in Cozumel the van was there waiting for us. Quick trip and we were home at Aura.
Check in was quick and friendly. Our room was not ready, but we expected that arriving at noon. We changed into our swimsuits and hit the pools. Everyone should be aware that walking around the resort involves steps and bridges. These can be a bit dangerous and my husband fell on a step and broke a toe before we even got into our room.
We got into our room in mid afternoon. It was a beautiful suite near the lobby. We could see the ocean and pier from our back patio. We walked right out onto the sand behind the lobby pool. Nice quiet area. Our only complaint about the room was that we could never get a long, hot shower. The hot water seemed to last about 30 seconds then turned cold. The staff was great about trying to fix the hot water problem. They even put in a new thermostat, but that didn't do it.
The food was great. Every meal was delicious and the service was excellent. We had room service a few nights and loved the chicken wings and the burgers. We ate at El Patio on the Sabor side. We did have to wait about 45 minutes for a table but it was after 7. The wait was nice as it was a beautiful evening and we were able to have a drink from one of the bars at the Sabor while we waited. The meal itself took about an hour but it was a 4 course meal. The service was perfect and we always had water and our drinks refilled.
Bourdeax was delicious also delicious. My husband and I both had one and really enjoyed the house red. Our wine glass was never empty. The service was flawless.
Our big day was our Anniversary. We did a couples message at the spa. The spa is also located on the Sabor side. We were able to use the sauna, steam room, hot tub, then had the couples message. After the message we were able to sit in a private hot tub. The whole morning was wonderful. That night we had dinner on the pier. We both had lobster which was also delicious. Our server, Jorge, was truly top notch. It was the most romantic night that we have ever had! The sun set while we were out there and we never felt rushed. A boat did come to drop off some people after we had eaten, but it was fun to watch them try to tie up to the pier. The tour guides on the boat apologized for bothering us.
There are a few nightly shows. The fire show was amazing. The Elvis impersonator was good at singing but he talked too much which ruined his show. There is not much going on at night. One night we got the dj at the Sky Bar to play a little later than he was supposed to and we had a blast dancing the night away. Otherwise, the Sky Bar was pretty quiet. This is probably where they could make big improvements.
Another tip would be to forget the buffet at the Sabor side for breakfast. Stay at the Aura and eat a sit down breakfast. They have mimosas and fresh fruit and you can order amazing egg white omelets. They never let your coffee go empty. They actually give every table their own carafe which we really liked. We went over to the buffet just one morning and only got one cup of coffee.
During the day I spent a lot of time snorkeling. They have free equipment and you can snorkel right there at the resort. Be sure to go under and around the pier. Also to past the Sabor to snorkel. There is a big chunk of cement in the water from a hurricane and the fish are everywhere out there.
Do the Cozumel Bar Hop!! Greg is awesome and it is so much fun.
Spend a day in Cozumel and do some shopping and hit some bars there. Not just Margaritaville but hit some of the little bars downtown. They give our buy one get one beers and we ended up with free shots. Great people!
Overall, we had a wonderful trip to Aura. Hope to visit again soon!!
Oh, and the beds are amazing!! We have never slept to well!

Not the perfect place to go, but close enough for me. You get what you pay for and this was a really reasonable price for us. The beach staff girls work their feet off so take plenty of ones and tip well. The entrance to the beach is rocky as you've read but get snorkel gear on and float over the rocks and no problem, just not a swimming beach. The snorkeling is awesome right there around the dock. The fish also like all bran believe it or not so take cereal away when you leave Windows breakfast. The first room we had was clean with a super view, 1110 but turn that down immediately... next to kitchen area and too close to the lobby, very noisy... I put up with it too many nights then we moved. We had 1215 next, not as great a view and had its own noise, birds chirp under the awning all night. So we are home for the sleep, not much there.
Some of the food is awesome, the duck in Bordeaux's a must have. Tuna carnitas in Oceana wonderful. Husband had steak and eggs for breakfast really good get the sauce on the side. Want a banana? ask for one. Want lotion/conditioner - request that. Leave a note and some ones on your frig for what you want there. I don't like sparkling water so got them to replace with just bottled water, no problem, you will need lots of water there.
Some folks got sick, we never did. Not sure the difference. We were pretty careful not to eat chicken even at Coconuts. Made coffee with bottled water. Brushed teeth with bottled water. So not sure if those tips help but we weren't ill well from eating anyway. Got a margarita at Coconuts that did me in.
The night life at Secrets is nonexistent. Met some friends that would go to Desires at Sunscape for karoke. we were tired at night anyway. The entertainment staff provides randomly a newsletter for the next day events, they are tough to find, some things they say they are going to do, they didn't. No big deal, we were there for the sun, sand, and water. The snorkeling is excellent on Cozumel so do book a snorkel trip.
We rented scooters and had no problems, enjoyed very much, but we have motorcycles so the experience was probably helpful. Drive around to the other side of the island, so beautiful around Punta Sur.
No horror stories of huge spiders or roaches or uninvited critters except the annoying birds that I'm sure Secrets can do nothing about.
Late afternoon/evening restaurant person... not sure what his title is... Roger... he's great. Beach staff Eugenia and Arrelly are wonderful and work very hard.
If you get an unsatisfactory room look for Luis upfront to take care of you. We all have different tastes. I didn't desire a whole lot, some sleep would have been helpful
Immigration and customs going both ways were awful on Wednesdays. Almost missed connection in Dallas and had two hours. We did carry on only and it can be done.
Long pants for men are enforced in the evenings in Bordeaux and Windows restaurants. We only ate breakfast one time at Sunscapes the Market Cafe... huge buffet pretty good. Otherwise didn't enjoy the food at Sunscapes.
Secrets has enough food there to choose from to keep one happy. I didn't go for the food, but the cheeseburgers at Barefoot grill - yummy. The drinks are good, not much alcohol in most, ask for the "good stuff" they don't really understand topshelf. So check the name of the tequilas when you go to a bar and ask for what you want.
Can't think of much else. Don't take a hair dryer, theirs are fine. Don't take beach towel, there are plenty at all the pools. We would just go by early morning and get fresh towels. They would bring them to the room if we asked.

Room Tip: "do not choose 1110" don't take it

Although a bit late on reviewing this property we are getting ready to go on another vacation and I always look to these for advice so I thought I better post my experiences too! It was named the Aura Cozumel Wyndham back then :) The rooms were great, very well maintained and beautiful. We had a room with a lap pool, but sad to say we never even used it. The grounds were well kept and the food was good. Don't expect for it to taste like it would in the US. Pizza is different there. Beaches were rocky but the pier was amazing! Everyone was friends and it is truly an all-inclusive experience.

Tip: Go to the other side of the island. It is breathtaking. Beautiful blue water, no residential or buildings around. Simply relaxation. We rented a motorcycle and went and it was the highlight of the trip!

Room Tip: Probably would have used the swim-out room instead of booking the one with the private lap pool.

My husband and I stayed at Secrets Aura Cozumel at the begining of April 2013. We were pleased to find out upon arrival that we were also able to use the neighboring property, Sunscape. This did make for more beach and restaurants. The property is beautiful and the swim up suites are exceptional.
This was not our first trip through this property chain. We had stayed at several of the Dreams properties, 2 in Punta Cana,DR and 2 others in Mexico. This was our first vacation through the Secrets property. We felt that with the transition that the staff, especially in the restaurant and bars, were just not up to what we have come to expect with this resort chain. We feel that given some time it will be up to the standard we expect from these resorts.

Some random comments in no particular order.
The hotel and grounds are nice enough but I wouldn't go so far as saying this is a 6 golden apple as Apple Vacations has it rated. We've stayed at Sandals and Zoetry which I would rate as 6 golden apple but this Secrets is a step or two down from those.

The hotel check in time is 3pm so don't expect to get a room before that time. Most people we talked to didn't get a room until after 3pm, there were a couple exceptions but I think that had to do with the day they arrived.

We weren't bothered or hassled by the timeshare folks, in fact I forgot that was there until someone told us they got resort credits for listening to their presentation. That was on our second to last day.

We were on our anniversary trip and got "upgraded" to preferred status. This means we were in the rooms located around the "lazy river" pool and had access to the "preferred" lounge which we only used because the bartender there was kind enough to pour tall drinks. Also I found it annoying that they wouldn't let me have a bottle of the house wine to take back to our room. They said I could order glasses of wine from room service but that seemed kind of ridiculous when I was already at the bar. Seems kind of wasteful to order 6 glasses of wine and then not drink it all when if I had a bottle I could just leave it in the fridge until the next day.

We did see numerous doors with the "Honeymoon" or "Anniversary" banners on them but I must not have told the right people because we never got a banner. :(

The lazy river pool was the quieter of the two pools. All of the activities (volleyball, etc.) happen around the other pool which also has the swim up bar. As others have stated, lounge chairs usually get "reserved" by 9am but aren't actually occupied by a person until later in the morning.

We always had enough hot water though you have to turn the shower knob to the left for hot water instead of to the right as it is most places in the U.S.

We were on the second floor and had an issue with water leaking from the light fixture above the bathtub when the people above us used their shower. We ended up getting moved to the room next door. I assume they were able to fix the issue as they put people into our old room two days later. I asked about a room upgrade several times but that didn't pan out for us.

Restaraunts for dinner were ok, yes, portions are "smaller" than what we are used to in the U.S. I never left hungry though as we always ordered an appetizer and soup or salad and then a main course. Sometimes we even splurged and got dessert.

We tried to go to Portofino (on the Sabor side) one night but when we got there it was closed even though the daily newsletter said it would be open. I called the next 3 nights to find out if it was open before walking over but it never was.

Went to Bordeaux 2 nights which was pretty good except for the wine. We decided to order a bottle of Chardonnay the first night and it wasn't chilled like it should have been. It was room temperature. They put it in an ice bucket so by the time we got our main course it was finally chilled. They ended up taking that off our bill when I complained about it. I ordered Beef Wellington which was ok, it was overcooked as in well done. My wife had a fish dish which she liked a lot. The onion soup is good there. The other restaurants are ok and allow for a little variety. I could see getting bored with the menus if staying longer than 7 days.

We usually ate poolside for lunch, I'd recommend avoiding the chicken sandwich though. My wife ordered it and it came out raw on the inside. Not sure if that was an isolated incident as we didn't see or hear of anybody else getting it while we were there. The quesadillas and hamburgers were pretty good.

We did go into town one day and that was where we had our best 2 meals.

The beach is pretty rocky as others have stated. The snorkeling is decent off the beach though. And you can walk out on the pier and use a ladder to get into the water so you don't have to walk out from the beach.

In summary, We had a good vacation and a relaxing time. We enjoyed ourselves but I don't think it was worth the money we paid especially given the 6 golden apple rating. I assume that Apple gave them that rating because Secrets other properties are 6 golden apple. I probably would not stay here again.

Room Tip: The birds hang out between the buildings away from the beach in the mornings and may disturb you if...

We enjoyed our stay here April 15-22. We had a ground floor swim-out in the old adult Sabor section (or so we were told). Our room had been remodeled, very clean, but definitely on the older side. Originally, we were in one of the upper rooms that would require using the slide to get to the bar, but we requested one that we could swim out directly, b/c felt we were too old to use the slides--esp after hearing about people flying off them into the bushes!!! There were some kind of wood or metal boxes right at the end of the slides that a couple people hit on the way down while we were there--Ouch! It was a strange pool-bar set-up--no one ever on the pool side to wait on you, but if you stood in the pool at the opening on the side of the bar, they would bring you drinks! Also, pool bar time listed as 10-6, but it always closed at 4, or earlier! Service a little haphazard at BF, lunch, but dinners were Great! Our only real disappointment, is that the first night we were there, we had left a collapsible ice container we had brought with us on our patio, and it was gone the next morning! Our room was on the end (room 4315) where people walk by, and someone must have taken a fancy to my container, and decided to make it theirs. I did report this to the Preferred Concierge. Not a big deal, but I sure wish that person had let me know he wanted it, and would have given it to him when we left! In any case, made us very wary, as felt I had to keep cking on my stuff when we swam up to the pool-bar :( Our room on the end was private, but b/c of this, would recommend a room in the middle! The Sunscape Sabor next door, in some ways, has better bar set-up for gathering, but we met some wonderful folks at Secrets, and had a Great time. This was our 3rd Secrets--have been to Silversands, and Hualtuco, and it won't be our last!!
