“It's Not A Secrets!”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

For those of you who have experienced Secrets resorts in the past, stay away from this one. My wife and I visited Secrets Aura for a week starting 2/15/14. We have visited several other Secrets in the past (in fact we were married at Secrets Capri) and have found them to be five star facilities. The Aura property is old and has seen some rough days. I do not know what corporate entity owns the Secrets brand but they have made a terrible mistake in branding this one before it was ready. The exterior of the main complex is looking shoddy and the junior suite (preferred club swim-out) has seen better days. The sectional couch had been stained in the past and obvious attempts to clean in were not successful. Some of the wood in the bathroom had been gouged with resulting poor quality patching and painting. The sliding closet doors were difficult to operate and the handle on one of the doors was broken. If this were a visitors first experience at a Secrets property they would be very reluctant to take a chance on another.

The dining experience was all over the map. The French themed restaurant was excellent but you'd better be in line when it opens otherwise you will not eat for another hour and a half. The Windows restaurant was very good and Oceana was also pretty good. Stay away from the Portofino at the neighboring property. It didn't even measure up to a mediocre college cafeteria.

The beach experience is poor as you cannot wade in the ocean; the bottom is very rocky and sharp. The sand in this location is course as in the type used for mixing concrete. There are not enough beach chairs and if you wish to have a nice location with shade you must be there with your towels and such at 5:00 AM to reserve your spot. The first morning I did this I returned to the spot at a little after 7:00 AM to find my things tossed aside and my towels taken and a woman in the spot I had reserved. She immediately blamed her husband. I found out from another nearby couple that was the third time during the week they had been seen doing that. Without detail I will tell you that I took care of the situation on my own.

Finally the staff, especially the servers. They do not have enough help and I've never seen a group of servers work so hard to please the guests. Their attitudes were excellent and did everything they could to ensure your pleasure. At times they were actually running to keep up. It was only through their efforts that I gave Aura a three star rating.

I voiced no complaints to the management of the hotel as, frankly, the deficiencies were not anything they could remedy in a short time. The issues are at a corporate level and again I do not understand why they put the Secrets Brand on this place at this time. It is, at least, a couple of years away from being ready, assuming they continue to work on the facility.

Finally, be very aware of Apple Vacation ratings on this and other brands as they have a corporate interest in this and other properties.

Room Tip: If you insist on trying this place the newer facilities around the preferred club pool are probably...

We visited Secrets Aura Feb 7 - Feb 14 with some friends for our annual retreat from winter. Previous travel experience included several all inclusives in Mexico and Jamaica. Some thoughts we had of our time at Secrets:
1) Check in was a bit of a hassle, took about 1-2 hours to get into rooms. We did spend the time eating at the restaurant and tossing down a couple of drinks but not what you want to deal with after 8+ hours of travel.
2) Rooms were a mixed bag: after requesting three rooms close in proximity for our group we had one group in the older section, two rooms in the new section. One of our group requested a new room which was a bit of hassle for the staff to accommodate along with some service issues during the stay. Our room was very nice, service was good, fridge restocked daily - our only thought was every time we came back to the room it was apparent that staff had been in doing something while we were gone. There was a very obvious sewer smell that was present in the area off and on during each day.
3) Food: Four restaurants on the resort along with access to the three restaurants on the adjourning property. You had to pay attention to the daily schedule because at least one of the restaurants was not open every night. No reservations accepted, so be there by 5:45 or wait until after 8. Quite a variety of food available to anyone wanting to experiment with different options but serving size was small. We learned to not be shy about ordering two entrees to satisfy our appetites. Room service was very good from what we heard. Bourdeaux was excellent, Windows OK, Oceana OK, Marketplace (breakfast and lunch buffet) was good, Seaside Grill was good. Also had a daily burger buffet on the beach if you were OK with a quick fix for your hunger need. Don't get expectations too high on any of the nightly buffets -- it seemed an issue to provide enough of the dishes the hungry masses waited in line to get.
4) Pools were small but OK. We spent the majority of non-beach time at the preferred club swim up bar as a cool off station. While on the beach, Elena and Yared were always there to take care of refilling drinks or bring food from the grill to keep us content. We were really looking forward to the "foam party" during our stay but it was cancelled due to marginal weather that day (it was a bit windy and the high was only 74 F).
5) Activities: We didn't get into any of the daily planned resort activities other than watching some new friends in beach volleyball. The crew at Dive Planacar were super at issuing snorkel gear, sending us out in kayaks or Hobiecats or arranging off site snorkeling/scuba excursions. (Juan and Oscar were super). Nightly shows are OK if you accept them for what they are, just don't get expectations too high.

Overall - not terrible, not terrific. If we decide to come this way again we have some things we will probably do differently but still OK for the type of getaway we were looking for. Some of the staff (as noted above) were very good, some very overtasked, some you wondered.

Let me first start off by saying that my wife and I are regular all inclusive travelers. We have been Vacationing in the Caribbean and Mexico every year for over 20 years. We have stayed in many Sandals, Rui, and Secrets resorts over the years and this was by far our worst experience.
Apple rates this as a 6 Golden Star Resort, someone must have paid off the ratings advisor because this was no where close to even a 3 red apple resort.
We traveled this year with a group of 10 of us (5 Couples) and we all left with the same feeling of regret for wasting our time and money.

Pros..
1. The food was good. In fact this is the best point of the resort. French restaurants food was wonderful
2. The Pools were nice (Small but nice)
3. Drinks were good
4. Being able to use the sister resort next door
5. Refridge was refilled every day
6. Weather was great

Cons
1. The check in process was slow and very disorganized, our travel agent had requested a corner room for us(per my request), but the front desk had no request on file. I know it was sent because I was cc. on the request.

2. Once in our room the AC was running water onto the floor, we notified the desk and it was fixed right away, BUT they left the pool of water on the floor for us to clean up.

3. One of the couples we traveled with ended up with two double beds not a king as paid for, they did give them a new room the next day after they went the whole day without a room and had to move their own luggage around

4. The swim up bar at the pool view rooms (Manatee Bar) was used as a storage area, NO bartender. You had to get out to go get a drink, and pool service was nonexistent until our last full day there.

4. There were only 3 Restaurant and one was closed every night so if you were not in line 30 minutes prior to opening you waited over 2 hours to get in.

5. Restaurants were slow, we waited for our Breakfast one morning for over and hour at Oceana, after we had to order it for a second time

6. Internet service was extremely slow even in the lobby

7. Buffet was mediocre at best, very small and very limited. Not what we have come to expect at other resorts.

8. The entertainment staff did nothing, we showed up for beach volley ball 3 times at the posted time and no staff (or Ball) same thing with the pool volleyball but we were able to finally get the net up and play with our own organization. The entertainment staff showed up each day to turn on the radio, and played ping pong with themselves then we never saw them again.. See picture attached to this review

9. Too much to list

There are many good...great Secrets Resorts out there this just wasn't one of them. We will not be returning and we will be more careful about trusting Apple ratings in the future

Room Tip: Pick another resort

My wife and I stayed at Secrets Cozumel Feb 4th to the 8th. Overall the resort was ok, but it is in no way 5 star. Check in is a joke and the wait is half an hour on a good day. I saw many people stacked up 5-10 deep just to check in, the front desk staff is inept.

The food was ok, but found it was typically cold a lot of the time. The breakfast buffet was very good, best if you arrived early. Same with lunch buffet, very good but arrive early. The Asian night buffet at the Market Cafe was, well..disgusting.

We stayed in the new section and were fortunate that we did not lose power, water or phone, but many of our neighbors did. Seems the resort opened this section to soon and has some issues to work out. Our room was very nice, new and spacious, no issues at all.

The pool in the new section is very nice, but the bartender was VERY slow. He was not capable of mult-tasking and seemed to only be able to make one drink at a time. No worries about over indulging on the libations.

Another issue that we kept noticing was a distinct sewer smell near the rooms in the new section, hopefully they have sorted that out.

We have been to the Cancun, Riveria Maya and Cozumel area on 11+ vacations so we have a pretty good idea on what is 5 star and what is not.

Overall the resort is ok, but be prepared to be patient and manage your expectations.

Room Tip: Rooms in the new section are very nice. .

We vacationed here Feb 6 through 16th. We had originally booked at Sunscape which is a sister property located next door. We re booked a the last minute when we read reviews that showed the rooms we had booked months ago, had been sold to Secrets. We were quite upset that Apple did not notify us of this in advance and according to the reviews we read, did nothing to the rectify the problem when it was reported to them . We had to pay quite a bit more to move to the Secrets property and then upgraded to the preferred services.I am really glad we upgraded to preferred. It had it's own swim up bar which was much quieter than the other swim up area and all the rooms were a lot closer to the beach. We also had our own concierge Yared who really took care of his people. Some of the other couples we traveled with had problems that the front desk did nothing about but only one mention to Yared and it was handled. Our room was ground level on the corner of the ocean front area. There were windows along the side that looked into our bathroom.I was very uncomfortable walking past them at night since there were no shades/blinds and the outdoor water faucet was located directly in front of them.and at night the custodial staff used this faucet to clean garbage cans etc . We mentioned it to Yared and within hours a frosted covering was applied so the light came in but no one could see in.
We used room service for breakfast most mornings since we had such a great view and the buffet was rather generic. We ordered pizza for lunch one day, it was horrid, not hot, cheese barely melted and had mystery meat instead of pepperoni. It had to have been microwaved not baked
The French restaurant was very good but if you were not there a half an hour before they opened you had up to a 2 1/2 hour wait. When you did get in, it was so dark you could not read the menu with out a flashlight and service was very slow. The day we went early and got in right away, they rushed us through so quickly you did not get a chance to enjoy your meal..
Oceana , the seafood restaurant did not thrill us. The first time we went there (for lunch) the hostess would not accommodate a party of six. We had to sit 4 and 2 . There was room to put the tables together but we were not allowed to do that. Later in our stay that was no problem. The food was good but even though we had bread plates and butter knives at our table there was no bread available for us at 6:30.
The food at Windows restaurant was very good every time but even there the quality changed. Some nights the very same meal (Shrimp Rockefeller) was excellent and other nights it was EXCEPTIONAL!. It tasted differently and was a larger quantity plus plated totally different.
We later found out that our section of the resort had been rebuilt and had just opened. In general the resort is understaffed and service/meals are inconsistant. There were not enough beach chairs, if you did not get up at 5:30 to get one, you were out of luck. The room was there to at least double the amount of seats on the beach. There were also not many chairs at the pool.
The liquor was top shelf and the mojitos were the best I have had in a long time.
The entertainment was unexceptional. It started too late and was ho hum. Most of what was going on was in the Desiree bar which should be torn down and burned. It had such an odor of mold and old smoke that it immediately cut off my breathing and really bothered everyone in our party.
In closing, I enjoyed Cozumel and would go back there. Maybe in a year of two, after they get their act together we may go back to Secrets.
There is a lot of potential there for a great resort and many thanks to Yared for making our stay a success .

Room Tip: Ocean view Preferred section the best except for the room next to the entrance to the buffett.

We just returned from Secrets Aura (Feb 13-20, 2014) and it was a fabulous vacation with my husband. We were celebrating Valentine's Day, our Anniversary, and his Birthday and Secrets made everyone of those occasions special. We had a fabulous room in the Preferred Club. The pool and beach were right outside our patio. Jared, the Preferred Club Pool Concierge" was amazing. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for us.
People complain about the beach, but the beach is left in its natural state for a reason; snorkeling. They do no alter the beaches which is kind of nice. It is still white sand, but I'll admit a bit rocky to enter. But, if you're into snorkeling, it is worth it; especially the snorkeling excursions.
Our room had only been opened for 3 weeks and was one of the best rooms I've ever had in a resort. Very modern, huge, large shower, heated flooring in the bathroom and outside the dressing area. Well lit, but will admit the room could have used another mirror. Well stocked mini bar daily. They even left a mini can of pringles and a pkg of chocolate M&Ms every day.
The food was fantastic; all al la carte and no making reservations. The only problem was you had to eat early or late. The restaurants served a 4-5 course meal which was timely so if you didn't make the first seating, you were eating a little later, which didn't really bother us, but it did bother some people.
I really enjoy this vacation and would definitely go back. Just not with Sunwing; they do not fly directly to the island.

Room Tip: Ask for Preferred Club. Is is a little more expensive, but well worth it. I would also recommend the...

We stayed at the Secrets Aura Resort Feb 6th thru Feb 13th. We had big expectations from the moment we talked with our travel agent about going to a Secrets Resort. She told us that it would be very tough booking future all inclusive resorts because they are about the best. Once we got to the resort we were greated with a glass of champaigne which was a nice touch. We began our check in process and turned out to be a very slow process. After about an hour and a half we finally got directed to our room. During our check in process we were told by staff that we were going to be very pleased with our room because they were brand new and never had been occupied before. We were shown to our room and our first initial impression was great and we were very pleased with the look of our room. We were in the Prefered section of the resort on the second story beach front view on a corner room that also overlooked the prefered pool. The first night we had dinner at the Oceana Resturant and had a great dinner. The Grouper was daily special and the best that I've ever tasted. We turned in early after a full day of travel and then the fun began. Prior to us going to dinner the power went out in our room and we had no phone or directory in our room. So, before dinner we went to the front desk and let them know about our loss of power and not having a phone that was working in our room. They assured us that they would take care of the problem. After returning from dinner things seemed normal other than the refridgerator in our room was still not getting cold. No big deal on that because we said that we would let them know in the morning. I didn't realize that my morning would start at 4:20am with a loss of power and no air conditioner. I tried the phone and it still didn't work so I took off for the front desk. With the light on my cell phone I thought I would use the bathroom before taking off for the front desk. I walked into the bathroom and found the floor to about a 1/4" inch of water all over the floor and under the bathroom sink was completely soaked. I looked with my flash light and noticed that the line under the sink was leaking and all of our towels were soaked too. Once I got to the front desk I was told that I should have just called and they would have taken care of it. I again explained to them that we still didn't have phone service so I couldn't call. They did appologize and stated that they would have someone down there right away. Within a half hour we had a couple of men come to the room but they couldn't speak english but I was able to show them what the problem was. Long story short about the power, we lost power to the whole building that we were in six times during our stay. Also, we had no hot water for the shower and the water was leaking above the shower head fixture spraying into the ceiling. The staff did offer us a couple of different rooms within the resort but they seemed to be very dated and certainly didn't have the view. We were very patient with the loss of power but at the same time very disappointed. I will say that we did have good luck with Sandi of the preferred club. I asked for Sandi to come to our room so I could show her several things that were wrong with the room. She was very attentive and did make sure that all of the issues were taken care of. A couple of other things that we noticed is that the nightly intertainment starts to late for most people to enjoy. Another thing that would be nice is if they would change there menus daily. The prefered section of the resort is lacking chairs by the pool and the beach area. If you are not down to the pool or beach between 6am and 7am you will most likely not get a chair to lounge in until later in the day. The last night of our stay we lost power again about 2:30am. I did go to the front desk again to let them know about the problem and there was no one there. I used the curtosey phone to call and shortly after that someone came to the desk. I did inquire about speaking with the manager and I was told that he would be in at 9:00am. I let the desk person know that I would be there to talk with him at 9:00am and Daniel was there. He was well aware of the problems that we experienced during our stay and did make it right by us. I will say that they have a lot of work to do in certain areas but seem to be attentive. I would also like to give a shout out to Jared in the preferred section for doing a bang up job!
