I stayed here a couple weeks ago, overall the hotel is very nice since it is a new building. However I was very dissapointed of the view we have from the balcony, there is a graveyard in the back of the Hotel and since we were on the 2nd floor we were looking to this from the terrace jacuzzi (not very romantic I may say). I am not a superstitious person, but it is not a nice view any way.
I would not recommend to take the All Inclusive option since the Hotel is understaffed and the service is not good at all, we ate from the buffet as well as from the beach restaurant and the food is just average.
Be aware that "cafe del mar" is not open during the night and there is not DJ as it is supposed being a franchise of the one in Ibiza.

I had recently stayed at this hotel to consider it as a potential location to celebrate our wedding this coming august 2010. I must confessed i was a little worried for the last reviews posted on trip advisor, but fortunately i can also say that during our stay everything was great, the service, the food, the management, and the kindness of the staff so all worries have been vanished and i m so happy to have stayed there, and definitely we want to think of this hotel as our wedding location. Beach is sooo great, white and fine sand beach for real.

This hotel has a lot of potential but it just isn't there yet. We booked Superior room because we really wanted the hot tub on the balcony. The room was very small, but for the most part, very clean. The problem is it was noisy. They were working on the room next to ours (drilling/jackhammers) and it messed up our siestas on two different days. Plus the workers could see down into our hot tub so it made it a little strange to get in it when someone could see you. We asked to be moved and were told that would happen. Then I got a call ten minutes later to be told I had to pay 40 dollars more per day to move. The second day we lost power in all of our outlets and the TV and clock and hairdryer didn't work. It was fixed the next morning and had to be fixed again later that same day. Still, we were not moved. I honestly wanted to check out of the hotel I was so upset. I didn't want an upgrade, just a room that didn't have loud noise and power outlets that kept going out. Plus the King bed wasn't a king. It was two beds pushed together which created a big crack in the middle and was not comfortable. We were told all of the beds are like this. The hotel is new and still smells like...well it has a smell that I can't describe. But anyone that has stayed there knows what I am talking about.

I am as laid back as they come and rarely if ever complain. I prefer to go with the flow. But as a regular traveler I am used to the front desk and hotels to do their best to make someone feel comfortable. I felt as though they could have moved us since we had so many problems. They had plenty of rooms. Or at least said "sorry for your trouble". We got none of that. We thought maybe we didn’t get much priority since we didn’t do the all-inclusive. Who knows. But we were not happy with the service.

Now, let me say, I think this hotel has a chance to be special. If they can get things done and iron out the kinks it has a great set up. I love the pool and the pool chairs. They do need to do a better job of cleaning up around the grounds (my girl friend actually spent some time throwing away beer cans one day because she got tired of looking at them). I think they are under staffed at this time. Which is understandable but if you are going to have guest you MUST make sure they are taken care of. We did not feel that way. There are some good things about this place but when you get upset about the bad things it overshadows them.

Also, I HAVE to say this (talk about burying the lead): ISLA MUJERES IS THE MOST AMAZING PLACE EVER . The hotel was by far the worst part of our trip. The rest of the island was epic. I loved it and would go back in a second. The food was wonderful, the water perfect and the people were kind. DO go to Isla Mujeres, I would just think twice about staying at PA right now. They need to get it together first. I’ll post more on the great places on the Isla Mujeres forum.

I am not sure where to start. Let me start my saying that I am not a Ritz Carlton person but I do like clean rooms and good service two things this place lacks to say the least. I have been to countless resorts all over the Caribbean and Mexico and know what to expect from a hotel like Privilege Aluxes. My boyfriend and I were really excited and we booked 5 days with the All inclusive option we also booked our transfers through the hotel as well. We picked the resort due to all the good reviews on Trip Advisor the pictures of the resort and Jacuzzi on the balcony. I am beginning to think that the week we were there was a very bad week for the hotel because there are many more bad reviews now during the same time period.

The Transfers were with AGI tours and they were great and took us the entire way there even on the ferry all the way to hotel door. The only thing that was strange was that they are not allowed to carry the bags. Thought for the money they should. Upon arrival we walked into the lobby and it is very modern with cement floors and modern furniture. Very nice but I did notice a faint odor that I just couldn’t figure out. Almost like a moldy smell, maybe it was an issue with the water feature. Anyway, I read on Trip Advisor they greet you with cold towels and champagne, and they didn’t with us, I should have known this was to lead to things to come.

Upon getting to our standard room, we were told this was this only standard room with an ocean view and the view was nice, however the tub on the balcony had a brown ring around it and brown stuff came out of the jets, there were travertine tiles that were broken in the shower and for a hotel that just opened up a few months ago there was a lot of wear and tear on the walls that needed to have touch up paint. All I wanted to do was to sit in the Jacuzzi at sunset but could not due to the ring in the tub. I went down around 6pm to the front desk and spoke to the Carlos and he told me he would get someone up there ASAP. We had reservations at Satay at 9pm and before we left for dinner it still was not cleaned. On our way to eat dinner I once again stopped into the lobby and he said when we would get back from dinner it would be cleaned and it finally was. Just 4 hours later!

We went to dinner and the food was just fair but they messed up our orders, brought things out at the wrong time. I am not sure why they would mess it up, there were only about 6 tables in the entire restaurant.

The next day we ate at Sabor for the buffet breakfast and it was horrible. The food was not fresh the waffles were hard as a rock and fruit looked like it sat out all day and it was only 9am. The day got better and was a great day on the beach- the beach is great with plenty of seats. Café Del Mar, the beach restaurant, had the best food in the entire place but even that is average. The service on the beach for drinks is slow, now on vacation you can expect things to be slow but this was ridiculous. The waiter asked us what we wanted several hours after being there, he then forgot about us and I had to get him 45 mins later to bring us our drinks, he apologized and told me he forgot.

We ended up coming up to our rooms and it was not cleaned it was about 4pm. I was furious, I went to the front desk and they told me that if we would rent a golf cart and tour the island by the time we return it would be cleaned. The problem was we were tired and wanted to shower and relax. Why are they dictating our vacation? We didn’t have any other choice and we took the golf carts out, which I highly recommend. We drove all over and went to the ruins and had a great time. They run about $65 per day and the front desk can have them delivered to the hotel. When we returned the room still was not cleaned. I am beyond furious now. We wanted to make a reservation at Sabor for dinner but was also informed that the restaurant is closed during the week. That’s really bad since we are all inclusive and this is not communicated anywhere on their website or when we checked in. So here we are tired, hungry and our room has yet to be cleaned. We once again went to the front desk and demanded that they credit us the All inclusive back so we can eat outside the hotel. They also upgraded us to a suite which was beautiful. Edgar, one manager who handled this told us to let them prove to us that they are a good hotel, against our better judgment we stayed at the hotel and took them up on the credit for the all inclusive and room upgrade.

We ended up walking 3 blocks where all the great restaurants are we ended up going to Bamboo and it was great. We each got lobster and filet, salads, baked potatoe and drinks and for two people it was under $40. I was great!! It seemed all our fun was when we were away from the hotel.

The next day we toured the island, went to the turtle farm and checked out the shopping—once again it was great!! I ended up swimming a bit and it was very nice. When we got back our room was once again not cleaned, not sure what the problem is, the hotel had about 48 percent occupancy and the hotel booklet states rooms will be cleaned between 9am and 3pm. Seeing that it was 5pm we were not happy at all, I didn’t have time to go to the front desk because I had a spa appointment and it was Wonderful!!! That is the only thing good about this hotel, it is not flashy at all but the people there are really talented and it was just what I needed with all the stuff happening. As soon as I left I ran into my boyfriend who was on the way to the front desk… you guessed it the room still has not been cleaned. We head to the lobby demanding to speak with the General Manager, we get the run around, we tell them we will wait, we are there and wait for over an hour for him to show up. Anyway, Manolo the General Manager finally comes and we speak to them about all of this, he tells us that he isn’t sure why we are having issues with Housekeeping and the restaurants are going through a transition. We demanded our money back for the entire trip after he told us he didn’t think he could change things at the resort to make things better. So at 8pm we left Privilege and took the ferry to Cancun.

We agreed not to leave any bad reviews on Trip Advisor if they credit us back the entire amount. Well conveniently the credit machine was broken and they couldn’t credit us that night so I had them give me a written receipt with all signatures from the manager on there. They told me the next day they would run this. So we left on the ferry. You may say why am I witting this when they credited me, that is the problem, I got back home and checked my credit card and there was not a credit. It was like pulling teeth to get them to finally do it. This hotel is horrible and enter at your own risk!!!

Our vacation was not all lost we booked an ocean front room at Aqua Cancun, and it was incredible. They gave us a cabana for free since they knew we had a bad experience at another hotel and the next day in the cabana was heaven-apples, water, smoothies, brownies and a foot massage. Only wish we would have been there our entire trip. Don’t waste your time Privilege they have some many issues to work out that your would really ruin your vacation otherwise. Book with Aqua and take a day trip to Isla Mujeres. You can check out just about everything on the golf cart in one day.

My husband and I just returned from 3 nights at Privilege Aluxes for a quick end of summer getaway. I wanted to share our thoughts, as I read all the reviews prior to leaving, which was quite helpful.

The good:

The hotel is very clean and beautiful. They have done a lovely job with the decor and grounds of the hotel, and are maintaining it well. The pool area is lovely with pleny of loungers and umbrellas. It looks just like all the pictures. It definitely felt like a little oasis in the midst of a busy part of the island.

The beach is very nice with great chairs and palapas. The water is gorgeous and the sand soft and white. The swimming is easy, as there is a sandy bottom and only gentle waves. Cafe del Mar had great service, bringing us drinks to our loungers all day, as well as snacks or lunch. The spacing of the chairs was great, especially as compared with the beach club next door where everyone was packed together like sardines!

The room was very nice. We originally booked a "superior room" with expedia as part of a package. It was a smallish room, which did have a jacuzzi on the balcony. However, the balcony was tiny and overlooked the roof of a restaurant, which really made the use of the jacuzzi quite unappealing. We were offered an upgrade to a deluxe suite for $20 more per night, which we chose to do. This room was fabulous, with separate living room, nice bedroom, big balcony overlooking the pools and on to the beach. It was WELL worth the money to upgrade!!

The staff were all super nice and working very hard. It seems to be a fairly small staff, as you would see the same people all the time-that added to the friendly atmosphere.

The not so good:
We were unfortunately not very impressed with the food. Admittedly, we live in Charleston SC and are used to high quality restaurants. We only paid $100 more for the all inclusive option for the 3 days we were there, so we had already planned to eat elsewhere on the island. I feel that we got our money's worth just with drinks and snacks alone, but I would have been very unhappy if we paid a lot for all inclusive option and planned to really treat it as an "all inclusive" . Some of it was good-the club sandwich, guacamole, omelets at breakfast were all good. The rest of the buffet at breakfast seemed like it had been sitting there for hours (and we ate fairly early). Dinner at Satay was OK for one night (the snapper was good), but there was a very small menu and the sushi was fair. I heard another guest say it took her three hours to eat there, but the service for us was good both nights. There was a buffet at dinner at Sabor, but we did not try it as the breakfast buffet was not good.

I was also disappointed with the drinks. I read one review stating the drinks were made with fresh fruits, but that was definitely not the case for us. I sampled several tropical drinks as well as the margarita, which were all only fair. Why can I get a better margarita in SC than in Mexico? :)The best, in my opinion, was the mango daiquiri. The only beer is Corona on draft. The chardonnay was ok. In general, I felt the food and drinks were on par with a TGI Fridays, not an upscale resort. Again, we paid very little, so I can't complain too much.

As far as the rest of our trip, we enjoyed our time on the island. The people were all exceptionally friendly and we felt quite safe. We ate at several places recommended by Hollyeats.com.

My favorite was Cafe tic-n-ix , although I know I am not spelling that correctly, (formerly playa lancheros) on the south side of the island. The fish was amazing as was the guacamole. That part of the island was quieter, which I enjoyed-actually being able to hear the waves instead of music from all the beach bars on playa norte. :) We ate here on the day we went about the island on a golf cart-very fun way to see the rest of the island.

We had a fabulous cuban sandwich from Qubanos downtown, and a great dinner at Olivias. Olivias also had a delicious Mojito that was freshly made-yum! I would highly recommend all of these spots, and they were all very reasonable in price.

Overall, we had a good experience-but not great. Hopefully they will improve the level of food and drinks. This is our first time to Mexico, so it may be similar to other resorts there, but not as good as our resort food and drinks in Jamaica, Bermuda, or Hawaii. They should consult with the other restaurants on the island, because many of them are getting it right!

My husband and I just got back from a 5 night stay at Privileges. We did the all inclusive and were very disappointed with the package as were a few other couples. The all inclusive package was supposed to include meals and drinks at the three restaurants, plus drinks at the pool and beach bars, plus room service. The first night we were there we arrived late and could not make reservations which were required to eat at Satay. The beach restaurant was no longer serving food and the other restaurant was closed for a wedding, leaving Satay as our only option. Even though there were only three tables being served, they haggled with us and said they could not serve us because they were so busy. They finally gave in and seated us, but the service was poor as was our food. Other couples were turned away and had to fend for themselves for dinner that night even though they had paid for all inclusive. The next morning I tried to order room service for breakfast, but was informed I must make the call the day before to get it. Who knows they need room service the day before?! and better yet what time you will wake up for breakfast.! Another couple was 10 minutes late for their reservation and they would not let them have dinner. We did the buffet breakfast one morning, but the food was awful and even the cereal was stale. We decided after the first day to do our own meals on the island as their are great places to eat all over. I definitely recommend Mogagou and Casa Rollandi. The lack of service did not ruin our trip; we were just disappointed that we paid for all inclusive.

The beach is wonderful. Their are plenty of palapas for all of the guests and service is pretty good especially when you tip each time you get a drink. Pool bar was great too. Every night we would take a couple of drinks and sit in the water to watch the sunset. Also recommend renting a golf cart to drive around the island as there are many things to see. One night we actually got to see a sea turtle come up to lay her eggs on a beach at the other end of the island.

The rooms were very clean. The beds were comfortable. No complaints about the rooms. They also keep the mini bar stocked, but it does not get very cold.

We have stayed at both Ixchel and Privileges Aluxes. I would recommend going over to Ixchel. They don't have all inclusive packages, but their beach is more private and the allinclusive at Privileges is worthless anyway. Take the money you save from not purchasing the all inclusive package and enjoy the many wonderful restaurants around the island. Definitely go to Magagua, one block away from the middle street with all of the restaurants and shops. Their penne with bolognese sauce is excellent!

We will be back to Isla Mujeres but not back to Privileges.

My husband & I visited Privilege Aluxes from July 11 - 16, 2009 & were very pleased with the hotel & the staff. As others have already stated, the hotel is clean, comfortable, and intimate with personalized service for each guest. This was our first trip to Isla Mujeres and PA and we were a bit nervous about our choice in hotels due to the mixed reviews on TA, however, it was completely unfounded!

What we loved:
The CLEAN rooms & hotel, the beautiful sea, the friendliness of the staff, the way the hotel General Manager made it a point to check in with every guest o ensure that every person was enjoying their stay, the fresh & delicious food, quality alcohol selections, and general "vibe" of the hotel. We also really appreciated that the hotel was small and easy to navigate as we have had our fill of "mega resorts", they are just too big for our tastes.

What we hope they improve:
The selection of food. Because of low occupancy there were limited choices served at the beach restaurant for lunch & dinner. After 5 days we were ready for some variety! However, all of the food they did serve was fresh & very good! We would also hope for better service. All of the servers were kind and really tried to please the guests, they were just not as quick, efficient, and reliable as others we've encountered. I'm sure this will improve as the hotel becomes more established. Also, we noticed that we were often overlooked or bypassed for service when Mexican guests were on the beach or at the bar, despite tipping at least one US dollar per round of drinks and more if we ordered food. Maybe the language barrier is a factor...we do not speak Spanish very well, but we do try!

All in all, it was a wonderful start to our vacation & we are planning to return with friends & family. The small things we hope will improve over time would in no way keep us from returning to this little gem!
