“Great value for the money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2011

My 19--year old son and I spent 4 nights at Hotel Rocamar on the recommendation of a friend who had spent vacations there for the past 25 years. I paid $50 US per night and the room had two double beds, A/C and small fridge. No TV, which was a blessing. Isla Mujeres has so much to see you won't want to spend time in front of a TV. The hotel is located at the south end of the Restaurant / Shopping district, so everything is within walking distance.

Bring comfortable walking shoes. I did not and wished I had. We rented a golf cart one day to tour the north end of the isand and see all of the sites, so the rest of the time we walked and used cabs when we needed to go further than a mile.

The staff is very helpful and takes great care of the property. Our room was on the 2nd floor facing east to the Carribean Sea. Every room has a hammock on the balcony and ours got lots of nap time hours!

There is an outdoor basketball court where the locals play organized teams every night starting at dark. The food from the street vendors is a good as you get in the restaurants. A pastry shop a block away makes fresh stuff daily and serves coffee, juice and sodas, if you don't feel like going to a restaurant for breakfast.

The only downside is the nightclub located 100 feet from the hotel plays loud DJ music starting around 11pm and into the early hours of the morning. Bring earplugs and you won't be bothered with it.

I will go back to Rocamar my next trip to Isla Mujeres.

The Hotel Rocamar is very minimalistic like other reviewers have reported which can be okay for a short time. But if I'm staying for a week or longer, I would want to have a few more amenities like a TV, coffee maker and internet in the room...especially since I often travel alone. The glass bathroom is no problem when you're by yourself, but it would be rather uncomfortable with a companion. (Why would anyone design a hotel bathroom with clear glass walls??) I paid in pesos and felt like I was overcharged, so I looked for a room elsewhere the next day and found one for less than half price of what I paid at the Rocamar. The view is definitely the best feature and it was very nice to sleep with the doors open so I could hear the waves crashing against the shore. I would stay here again, but only if I got a better deal on the price.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 2nd or 3rd floors for privacy and the best view.

Hotel Rocamar was a disappointment. The room was immaculately clean and the service friendly however the strange configuration of the glass walled bathroom and the unmistakeable odor of sewer make it impossible to recommend.

The room is simple, the view is fantastic, the sound of the surf wonderful, the sunrises beautiful, the bed comfortable.
But we had a disappointment...
Reserving online we were quoted a good rate for the room but made the mistake of paying the remainder in pesos instead of bringing US dollars (we're Canadian and thought it was appropriate to pay in pesos in Mexico.) Had they made it clear we could have paid US, no problem.
The first staff showed us a figure on the adding machine and we went off to the ATM to get the cash. A new staff was at the desk when we returned and the figure had jumped 700 pesos. He said the correct exchange rate was 13%.(Not the 11% the first staff quoted.) This was the equal to an extra day's rate! Attempts to reach the management have been fruitless.
So if you go bring your US dollars and don't expect much in the way personal attention.

Negotiated the rate in USD but if you want to pay in local currency they use 13 peso to the dollar compared to other hotels using 11.5 peso to the dollar.
Hot Water takes ages to flow through. Bathroom taps didnt work. Really bad water pressure.
Internet is not available in room. Only in lobby.
Good points is that they always offer unlimited coffee and location is good and price was good.

This hotel was well worth the money. We stayed on an upper level ocean view room. It was perfect walking distance from Hidalgo, and tons of bars and restaurants. The room is basic a bed, glass bathroom, closet, and balcony. We weren't expecting much for $75/night, so we were very pleased. We felt very safe walking late at night from the local bars back to our hotel. Also, pay the few extra dollars and get the upper level room with AC, Isla is VERY hot during the summer, it's well worth the money.
Even if if you don't end up staying at Rocamar DON"T waste your money on an all inclusive hotel, this island has the most delicious food from all over the world. I reccomend Mananas (breakfast), Qubanos (Lunch), Olivia (Dinner)
p.s. open your door and turn off the air and take a siesta, you won't ever forget the sound of the waves and the breeze.

Room Tip: Upper Level Ocean View Room with AC

We knew just what we were getting at Rocamar, A Room with an Ocean View, A Glass enclosed Bathroom w/ curtain), and A Mini Fridge, NO TV even though there is a cable under the table and it would seem there is indeed TV in other rooms?, The Glassed in Bathroom is OK but if you have never been with someone THAT close to a bathroom, Curtain or Not HMMMMMM, Our Glass Bathroom Door didnt even shut and The Wonderful Wind off the Ocean flooded in and Blew the glass door open, So the brand new Girl friend /Boyfriend thing might be a bit difficult, But hey, we Knew ahead of time and were old, Its all cool, except the mini fridge, never did cool anything, had to go with ICE
A Nice Clean and Inexpensive place to hang your hat!! and you cant beat the View!!
