This property needs some help on customer service guidelines. Your not able to EVER check in early or get a late checkout. The service staff are less than frinedly. However they will store your bags behind the counter for you. If you want to rent a golf cart I suggest you book it right when you check in. There is NEVER anyone at the front desk, so you have to ALWAYS wait, to get your breakfast voucher, exchange beach towels, check in/checkout. The grounds are OVERLOADED with cats...so if your allergic - steer clear. It was humid and drizzly a few days that we were there, and it smelled like a litter box, sin most of the grounds are sand. The overall value is not worth it. At $100+ per night, your not getting your monies worth for sure. Our room had a huge crack in the ceiling, there was a frame for a mirror, but no mirror, the bathroom window was missing a louver, so anyone on the patio could hear your bathroom business, the door had a crack in it, where any small reptile could get in. There was a larger frig in our unit, but since there is absolutely no counter or shelf space we had to make sandwiches on the bed. The only plus is that it is so close to the best beach on the island.

Room Tip: Our friends had a poolside room - the location was better, but they had a much smaller frig.

The hotel is in a great location right on playa Norte, the gardens and pool area are well tended with limited hammocks and sun beds, but in reality you will be on the beach, where you will be charged for sun beds and parasols, but the ticket entitles you to a free soft drink at the bar.
The continental breakfast is simple but you can add to it for a small charge.
We had a cabana which was slightly dated but the maid kept it spotless and changed the towels everyday, there was a fridge and a/c.
On balance the overall feeling was that it was a little tired, but well cared for and appeared to be reasonably priced.
Don't expect 4/5 star luxury or you will be disappointed

Room Tip: The cabanas have more space than the rooms in the tower

This was our first visit to Isla. We stayed four nights and loved it. Our room was directly above the restaurant, so we were lucky enough to have a beautiful veiw of the water from our deck and the window. No frills but very clean and quaint. Lovely garden area with hammocks and a pool. If you are the type of person who is up early exploring the island, on the beach in the afternoon, and out eating and dancing at night this is the ideal Hotel. If you are looking for plush with a lot of extras, this won't be the place for you. The staff in the lobby was also kind and friendly. Breakfast staff were slow and not interested in working, but we usually ate breakfast downtown. Will I go here again? You bet, as long as the price is right!

What a lovely little spot. Great location, right on the beach. The rooms are nothing particularly special, and there isn't much room around your bed (you're definitely not getting a cot in here for kids, for instance). But the grounds are nice, the pool well-maintained, and the staff generally friendly. Nice little places to wash the sand off your feet before you walk into your room, which our toddlers enjoyed.

It's true that the rooms are simple and no-frills. But you're hear for the beach anyway, right? So get outside and enjoy it!

If you check out early for a morning Cancun flight, be aware that the security guard will check you out, and he's quite slow. So plan accordingly!

Room Tip: The rooms near the pool are only about 20 seconds further from the beach, but they seemed much nicer...

Maria Del Mar doesn't have a lot of frills, the beds are a bit hard, you don't have views of the beach, the rooms are small, but it is right on the beach, walking distance to about anything you want on the North side. It's in my opinion on one of the nicer beach sides, calmer waters and right down from Fenix where you can do some free snorkeling. For the price there isn't much to complain about, the people were very nice and accommodating. Would I stay there again, only if I couldn't afford to stay anywhere else.

Getting there: My fiance and I paid way too much to get from the Cancun aiport to the Island. Do your research before going if you don't want to pay $90 ($80 for private transportation to the port and $10 tip). The boat ride was great though and our transportation from airport to island was fun and hassle free.

Arriving: We had never been to Isla Mujeres before and walked to the hotel, not wanting to pay anymore money for transportation at this point. If this is your first time to the island, I recommend getting a taxi to hotel as it is VERY cheap and worth it before getting to know your way around.

Hotel: We stayed 8 nights on the second floor of the tower. The pace moves slow in Mexico, which is something I LOVE! This hotel is no exception. Check in was a little slow but went very smooth and hassle free. The staff was wonderful! I was so nervous about this hotel after reading all of the reviews. Let me put your mind at ease...the staff was very friendly, room was clean, no bugs, beds were clean (first thing I checked), no bad smell at all, the grounds were so pretty, maid did a wonderful job everyday, and perfect location! The lady who checked us in, took us to our room. No they do not offer to take your luggage, but we don't mind that at all. There is no elevator so if you will have problems pulling luggage up the stairs, then you will want to stay on 1st floor. I didn't want 1st floor bc I think that's where they have the issues with the ants. The bed was very comfy, love the balcony, hot water everyday, water jugs replaced daily was great...used the pitcher provided for us in room to refill everyday, filled ice cube trays to put in cooler to take beer to beach during the day which really saved money for drinks! So we drank our coronas daily and bought mixed drinks at night on Hildago St...which is a short walk from hotel! Change out towels every other day but the lady at the front desk informed us that if we drop it in the water or something, they will replace it even if it's not time yet. The breakfast was toast, juice, and milk. My fiance is a very big eater and neither of us had any complaints...it got us started and sitting with our toes in the sand every morning was perfect.

The Bad: Rooms are small (which I don't mind) and dark (I did mind). The rooms are SO dark so we would open the door to the balcony when we were in there to let in the day light. Good lighting would be a cheap but very big improvement. Only two english speaking channels. Pool did look kind of dirty. Bathroom was very small and dreary. Wish they had king size beds on 2nd floor. I was not looking for a party place as I am 31 and have been to Cancun 4 times...not what I wanted this time. However, I do like good music (no not hip hop) and smiling faces! The bar by the hotel (as every other bar on the beach) played slow, elevator music & the bartenders did their job but that was it. No smiles or anything. No bartenders around the island were there to entertain you. Again, I don't want a party place which is why we chose this island...but some good music and smiling faces on bartenders were difficult to find anywhere.

Summary: Clean hotel, hot water, nice staff, very pretty grounds, with a perfect location! Fiance said it was his favorite vaca ever bc it was the most relaxing. We ate lunch at a food market few blocks away...it was very cheap and good mexican food! The island is so easy going...carried our beer with us everywhere we went and rented a golf cart for 24 hrs...my favorite day there! Went fishing one day (booked from the small stand on the corner close to our hotel). We chose the time to leave for fishing, the guide skinned our fish when we got back and had a restaraunt on beach fix it, he ate with us and we enjoyed the best fish I have ever had! Will go back to this island and would stay at this hotel again!

We stayed here one week in mid january. This hotel is good value for your money. Good location, perfect beach and nice staff. Rooms are smallish but clean and confortable. Breakfast was below average and there is no wifi at the hotel area. Wifi and breakfast served in restaurant across the street.
