“Simple Accomodations, Great Location”
Reviewed 2 April 2013

We stayed here because we wanted to be on Playa Norte and the hotel we usually stay at (Na Balam) was booked. Playa Norte has by far the best beaches on the island and it is only a couple of blocks from town. After reading the reviews, I was a little concerned - we brought our own towels, made sure we had a copy of our reservation and came in with low expectations. We had absolutely no problems - our room was simple but clean (castle room), the staff was low key but accommodating. Part of what I love about Isla Mujeres is that it is not a luxury island - it is a small charming fishing village. If you are looking for luxury, I am sure there are some all-inclusives that fit the bill but you would probably be better off in Cancun. This was a perfect place for a few days away from everything. Clean (for a beachfront place), simple, and much more affordable than Na Balam. The fact that you had to pay for the chairs actually gave us the freedom to try out chairs all over the beach instead of just staying with the ones at our hotel. We never tried the breakfast because there are amazing breakfast places in town. We also rented golf carts from the front desk to explore the island. We had a great time and would come back.

Room Tip: Castle rooms are newer (less charm) but closer to the beach.

I've been to Isla Mujeres many times....I go for one reason and that is I am looking for a low key, no worries time away from the hustle and bustle of my "real" life. The problem I am seeing with many of the reviewers(especially more recent reviews) is that their expectations are similar to what I would look for if traveling to a spot that is EXPECTED to have amazing everything in their properties. The Island has certainly changed over the years, but it still maintains the charm I expect.

Now, as far as the Cabanas Maria Del Mar: The rooms are fairly dark, but who spends time in their rooms if they stay on a beach? The other truth is that the beds are a bit hard, and you are allowed to exchange your beach towels only once every 3 days. You must sign a charge slip for the key to your room, a tv remote, and the lock for the room safe. The service can be slow, but if you say out loud "Hola!" the gals will appear from the other side of the glass. The pool is darling and the garden surrounding it is as well. The staff does a great job with maintaining the grounds. The Island is known for the MANY stray animals that wander, and you will see cats(there were 3) and we saw two large Iguanas that hang out at this property.

Golf Cart rates are fair(at hotel) and in fact, I believe that they list at 450 pesos a day and many on the main ave list at 500 pesos. You CAN always ask for a better price...

I would recommend a room around the pool. You can sit at your patio after a long day in the sun and enjoy a beverage. :)

I would also recommend paying for the room in Pesos, or US Currency. They accept Travelers checks but we ran into a problem with the signatures and we had to go to the bank to take care of the matter. This was not a good experience.

Buhos used to have an awesome happy hour which attracted a ton of people and would be a great afternoon party-It no longer does this and I have seen a big decline in the bar/restaurant business as a result. The restaurant closes at about 530, and the bar stays open until 10 ish. We would go there as it was the spot on the property that provided WiFi-Get the code/password at the front desk when you check in.

They do charge 120 Pesos for chairs(this was new to me) which if you go to the Mercado and buy blow up floats(about $4 US), they will provided comfort on the beach and the water for you throughout your stay.

Again, if you're looking for something high end, and new and fresh-stay at one of the new AI's on the Island, and you'll get that. If you want charm then stay at one of the hotels that has been around for awhile. They are simple and tend to be less expensive also.

Happy Travels!

See ya soon Isla Mujeres.

Room Tip: The Cabanas around the pool.

We stayed at Maria Del Mar for four days in Feburary of 2013. The hotel is very clean. It could use some updating. The toilet flushing was a challenge and hot water was spotty. The staff is friendly and responds to requests in an acceptable manner. The Beach Bar which is owned by the hotel has acceptable food. However, the" breakfast included" in the price is a stretch; unless you consider OJ coffee and toast breakfast. The bar is large with a good seating area.

The outstanding feature of this property is the great beach!! You will find that the high priced hotels do not have good beaches. There are chairs, umbrellas, good liquor, and unique swing seats at the bar. Yes swing seats, just like when you were a kid!! Some of the swings hold two people.

Maria Del Mar has a number of its own golf carts, so renting is easy. The difference in price vs. the convience of the hotel makes price a moot point. Overall, our stay was without any major problems, and we would return.

Room Tip: Request ocean view second floor. Balconies are spacious, and have a line to hang and dry swim suits

Hardly worth staying in...there have to be better places that have staff that appreciate your business. Electric light sockets hanging out of walls, water pressure non existent, extremely small rooms, and again staff with no customer oriented attitudes. Wild cats running everywhere, so if alergic to cats dont stay here. Was 1 minute overtime on cart rental and they doubled the price on me. Breakfast was a joke ! Will never go back here a true rip off

Room Tip: Old poolside rooms unkept, no maintance, no service, no blankets, if I could have gotten a refund I...

this is my 4th time staying here.....love it, it is a basic simple place to shower and sleep, Quiet and on the best beach. I have always found it safe for us and the kids, even the teens love it. prices are great and the toast and tea with juice is perfect way to start the day.. We miss it already.

We stayed 2 nights at Maria Del Mar and found the accommodations to be good enough for that short stay. The room was small, but since we were only in the room to sleep, that didn't really matter. It was nice to be able to rent the golf carts so easily. The wait at the front desk was a little annoying--especially when you could see and hear people in the office, but no one was in a hurry to help (this feeling is made worse after a long day of traveling with 2 kids). Breakfast was bare-bones, my husband and I gave ours to the kids and opted for just coffee. Overall the stay was satisfactory. I wouldn't want to stay a whole week, though.

This property needs some help on customer service guidelines. Your not able to EVER check in early or get a late checkout. The service staff are less than frinedly. However they will store your bags behind the counter for you. If you want to rent a golf cart I suggest you book it right when you check in. There is NEVER anyone at the front desk, so you have to ALWAYS wait, to get your breakfast voucher, exchange beach towels, check in/checkout. The grounds are OVERLOADED with cats...so if your allergic - steer clear. It was humid and drizzly a few days that we were there, and it smelled like a litter box, sin most of the grounds are sand. The overall value is not worth it. At $100+ per night, your not getting your monies worth for sure. Our room had a huge crack in the ceiling, there was a frame for a mirror, but no mirror, the bathroom window was missing a louver, so anyone on the patio could hear your bathroom business, the door had a crack in it, where any small reptile could get in. There was a larger frig in our unit, but since there is absolutely no counter or shelf space we had to make sandwiches on the bed. The only plus is that it is so close to the best beach on the island.

Room Tip: Our friends had a poolside room - the location was better, but they had a much smaller frig.
