“Low key and quiet- pretty but not fancy...”
Reviewed 14 October 2009

Two of my girlfriends and I just got back from a 6 day stay here and we had a fantastic time on the island. The location of the hotel is great, just steps from the beautiful "North" beach. It is only a short, safe walk to the downtown area, although we ended up renting a golf cart from the hotel ($45 USD a day) to cruise downtown and explore off the beaten path. I loved the fact that the entire island is friendly and safe. We even ate at a tiny restaurant well outside of where tourists usually venture, and had a delicious and very cheap meal. The locals wave to you and seem to be genuinely happy to see you there.

We had a downstairs room near the pool with a patio and lovely view. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept. The pool is small, but shaded during the afternoon and very quiet, although I'm sure it wouldn't be during high season. No trouble with check-in, although we had to pay for everything upfront when we first booked, which could be problematic if you did have problems.

Now for the not-so-great part. The first night we barely slept at all because the beds were unbelievably hard. Upon looking at them in the morning, we discovered that we were sleeping on a box spring only- no mattress! We went to the front desk and the gal said that she would put something on them, which she did- (a thin memory foam topping which was quite comfortable)- and we had no further trouble sleeping. Our neighbors, however, were not so lucky, and had to sleep on the box springs their entire stay (perhaps because they were walk-ins and got a very reduced rate of $40 USD). I also requested and received a blanket, as there were none on the beds. Pillows were firm, but clean, and the room was cleaned and made up nicely every day. The room was decorated in "cheap chic", with bright pink walls and mismatched furnishings. Certainly not fancy at all, but charming in that Mexico sort of way. There was a small refrigerator in the room, which turned out to be very handy. We didn't have any problems with bugs.

As others have noted, the "Continental Breakfast" consists merely of coffee, orange juice (slightly off-colored, but tasty), and 2 pieces of toast with jam and butter. They were supposed to have sweet rolls of some sort, but never did while we were there. Not much of a breakfast, but the staff was friendly and the location (outside, right on the beach) was a fabulous way to start the day.

All-in-all, we enjoyed our stay and can't wait to return to the Island!

Beware, Do not give a deposit, or pay in full until you see the accommodations. Horrible...no closets, shower not working no keys to safe, AC was going out, cracks between windows and doors...bugs galore. We gave a deposit for two rooms. When we got there, they wanted us to pay in full for both rooms before we could see them. After arguing with the staff, they let us see the room. Thank god, we bolted out of there. Awful place. Do not pay upfront!!!

My husband and I just spent six days and nights at Maria del Mar, though we had the 7th night paid for. The Hotel is situated at Playa Norte (North Beach) and is but a 50 yard walk to a great beach. As advertised, we were given a room with one double bed and one twin bed, both of which were extremely old and uncomfortable. Upon our arrival we were told that Continental Breakfast would be offered every morning at the restaurant (actually the beach bar) across the street. It was...every morning we walked over to the bar and received 2 cups of coffee, 2 glasses of juice, 4 slices of toast with margarine and strawberry jelly...every morning. Upon being shown our room, we found that there was no water, so we had to call down to the front desk to have our water turned on, which it was within the hour. We knew we were not booking a luxury Hotel, however, there were some unexpected surprises....among them, cockroaches the size of your thumb AND upon returning our beach towels to the desk after our first day, we were told that we could only exchange our wet towels every THREE days! To it's credit, this Hotel was nearly empty and thus, very quiet. The pool was clean and the staff respectful, with the exception of the gal who gave us the bad news about beach towel refreshment. Isla is a beautiful, friendly island....if you like 'laid-back' this is the place for you, but you need to be aware that this hotel will not permit you to take beach chairs to the beach...you have to pay for them when you claim them. 150 pesos will buy you 2 lounge chairs and an umbrella on the beach for the day. We poked around the island the last couple days we were there and found that we could stay at the Playa Media Luna (about a block further north than Maria del Mar), a gorgeous Hotel with tons of amenities for 50% off! $87/night bought us the honeymoon suite with an incredible view, comfy king bed, continental breakfast with fresh fruit, muffins, coffee and juices brought right to the room! We also had a great upper-level patio with jacuzzi. We'll definitely be going back to Isla (as soon as we can) but will NOT be staying at the Maria del Mar. For the same amount of money, you can have twice the room, twice the breakfast, and twice the service! Downtown Isla (a three-block walk) one can find excellent Mexican and Cuban food. The Loncherias (where the locals eat during the day) offer awesome tacos, enchiladas, soups and chicken dinners for a song! We actually found that the less we spent on food the better it was! Definitely rent a golf cart (we didn't find much difference in price) and explore the southern end of Isla, where cliffs overlook spectacular waves.

The hotel is great located right next to the beach. But we were unwelcomed by the owner who seemt to be fed up of receiving guests. The first room we had was located in a nice flowered garden, but it was infested by mosquitos. It had an old air conditionning unit which was so loud that we couldnt sleep (same for the mosquitos). The following day, we asked to change the room. The owner, who was still awfully unfriendly, told there was no room left. So we asked a young lady to sort thing out and she put us in a building accross the road. This part was renovated, very well equiped and beautifully decorated. To resume, the old building is to avoid at any cost, the new one is great inside, but just because the owner is the worst hotel tenant in all of Mexico, think twice before you go !

The small but cozy rooms were nice, you roll out of your room right on the beach (where you actually get charged for shade from palmtrees!!!).
The beds are great. There's a fridge and cable tv in every room and the rooms are clean!
We didn't use the pool since it was small, shaded and we had the ocean right next to us, but it looked ok though.
Don't get excited over the complementary breakfast, it's just some toast, coffee and something they call organge juice...

If you are high maintenence and looking for a luxurious vaction, do not go here. If you are an adventerous, independant, easy going traveler - this place is great! It right on the beach. We paid $75 per night in the Tower sections. The balcony was wonderful - however, there aren't really walls between your balcony and your neighbors, so not too much privacy out there. The room itself may be a little outdated, but its still good. There was a big beautiful stained glass window that opened out to the balcony. The bathroom was somewhat dissapointing - bad shower head and no shower curtain!!
Most of our stay was pretty quiet, but the last night, a couple staying next to us was screaming and fighting for hours! We could hear every word. I guess its not the hotels fault though - we did not hear any other guests noise. The front desk was friendly, but a little confused sometimes. They did set up a massage for us and they massuese came right to our room! Most of the people at the front desk do not speak any english. Our spanish is decent, so we were fine, but it may be tricky if you don't speak a word of it. It frustrates me that people complain about this?? Come on...you're going to Mexico! If you absolutly refuse to learn basic spanish phrases, maybe Miami is a better choice you!
A guy riding his bike down the street offered us a great deal on a snorkle trip - better than all the brochures in the hotel advertised. Snorkling was fantastic! As well as just going to the beach. Beaches are small patches of sand (rather than a wide, long stretch). There is a bike rental close by where we got bike for $2 for one hour and rode on the sidewalk along the wild eastern side of the island.

The cont. breakfast is just bread and juice, but their breakfast tacos were sooo good!
Overall - great place for the low maintenence traveler/adventuror!

This hotel is truly a great example of a mexican hotel - complete with the staff. We stayed the last week of April and had a great time. We stayed in the Cabanas so the pool was right off our balcony. The room was clean and the staff was accommdating even though there is a bit of a language barrier. Be prepared to pay a deposit for safe deposit key, beach towels, room keys and tv remote...all of which is refunded back to your credit card on departure. In response to the hard beds, it is "Mexico" not the Walford Astoria...they are fine. The beach is one of the most beautiful, with white sand and turquoise water. I would recommend this hotel hands down!!
