“Rough Jewel undergoing polishing”
Reviewed 4 June 2002

The Villa Vera Puerto Isla Mujeres Resort & Yacht Club was recently purchased by Raintree Vacation Club/ Club Regina in or about early 2002. If you're an RVC or Club Regina owner, you will likely be disappointed with the present state of the Villa Vera Puerto Isla Mujeres as it was not up to Regina standards as of June of 2002. The good news however, is that RVC/Club Regina is busy shipping in new supplies even as we speak, and have stated that the location is expected to be "complete" near the end of summer of 2002.

Starting with the good news, the Villa rooms (of which there are currently four) are beautiful and meet RVC/Regina standards. The Villa rooms consist of 1 bedroom and full bath (with jacuzzi tub) upstairs, toilet, shower, living room, kitchen area downstairs. However, the kitchens have yet to be stocked with plates, bowls, silverware, cooking utensils, bottle opener, dishwasher soap, etc. We had to request such items and slowly accumulated them over the first three days in order to become self- sufficient. (While there is a brand new dishwasher in the kitchen, no store on the island carried dishwasher detergent) Cleaning of the rooms by staff was subpar and training by the Regina manager had just begun to correct this problem.

The staff at the Villa Vera is professional, courteous, helpful and will go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The good news is, they recognize when you want peace and tranquility and will not disturb you during those times.

It is fortunate that it is so hot on Isla that no one would want to use a hot tub as the pool area does not have one, and the "hot tubs" on the porches of the villas make the P.V. Regina hot tubs look like Olympic pools. These are really only 10-12" shallow "bird baths" more than tubs and no one could fit their entire body into one all at once. The pool is very nice, as is the bar surrounding it. However, the water temperature is equal to or only slightly lower than the ambient temperature, so "cooling off" in the pool is not possible. Further, as gringos who easily burn, we were shocked to find not a single umbrella around the pool and only extremely limited shade from palm trees (be careful, burning under palm trees is easy). The manager indicated that umbrellas are on order through Regina and will be in place shortly.

The "Beach Club" is also entirely devoid of umbrellas or shade of any kind around the pools. On our visit, the two saltwater pools were experiencing a slime problem. The beach club's freshwater pool was no more than 4 ft. deep and warmer than the main pool back at the hotel. There is a beach, however, no palapas or umbrellas shade it. Also, disappointingly, sea grass grows right up to the beach edge, making wading into the sea impossible. If ocean swimming is priority, you must realize that RVC/Regina cannot correct this naturally occurring phenomenon. For a beach fix, we spent our days renting palapas and umbrellas up at the Play Norte (North Beach) area which is a beautiful beach and is the site of 90% of the beach activities, beach front grill action on the island.

The food at the Villa Vera is above average for the island, but you will pay more for this privilege. More creative cuisine, elegant dining and local fare can be had elsewhere on Isla at more accomodating costs.

In summary, while Villa Vera Puerto Isla Mujeres may in the future become a wonderful Regina location, I would wait to schedule my visit until the fall of 2002 and beyond.
