This gorgeous little Colonial-style hotel is terraced on a hill, right down to the beach. Each of the dozen or so rooms has a spacious balcony (or patio or grass area) with a hammock and table and chairs. Most rooms have a direct view of the turquoise water and the Cancun skyline. Rooms are simple, extremely clean and comfortable, have TV, refrigerator and A/C but you'll either be at the infinity pool or in the ocean. It's tranquil and the sky is lovely at dawn and sunset especially. The property is filled with blooming shrubs and vines and potted plants, beautifully kept. Isla is very safe, probably due to the Mexican Navy presence on the busy (other) end of the island.
The real surprise here is the food! Juan, the chef, is very talented. We arrived a day early for a yoga retreat and he spoiled us with fresh guacamole, tequila shrimp and cold beers, served on our balcony at sunset; omelets for breakfast, ceviche for lunch. He accommodated a mostly vegan diet requested for the group of 12 who arrived the next day, complete with freshly made juices three times a day, fresh fruits and salads at lunch and dinner, supplemented with fresh seafood (his ceviche is the best on the island! either shrimp or fish). One of our last evenings, he presented us with a chicken mole, from scratch! For those of you who haven't had a mole (mo-lay), it's a complex savory sauce made of several different herbs, nuts, spices, etc., and everyone in Mexico has their own secret recipe. The manager, Honorario, the housekeeper, Iris, and Elias, the waiter, could not have been more helpful and cheerful. Iguanas abound on this island, as they do in the Yucatan - they do not bite nor are they poisonous, but they are used to humans and will take food from your hand but do watch the fingers!
You can snorkel, swim and kayak right from the ocean at the base of the property. The lovely water is chest high quite a ways out. Bring swim shoes as it's a rocky coastline there. A 5-minute walk away is a snorkeling beach where you can rent equipment if you didn't bring your own. The staff speaks fair English but Martha Alvarez Balbas, the hotel assistant, is fluent in English and can handle all your requests via email or in person when you arrive.

To top it off, the hotel has a masseuse, Mary Ann, who lives across the street. We each had two massages during our week there and agree that Mary Ann has 'the touch' - a blessing for those of us who weren't used to such strenuous yoga practice. You can book through the hotel. You won't regret this!

All in all, a wonderful experience. I would go back in a minute!

Room Tip: Room 1 has a king-sized bed, a spectacular view of Cancun skyline and the turquoise water and a concave ceiling tiled in red brick.

After seeing and hearing all of the noise and congestion in El Puente, we were so pleased that our travel agent booked this 10 room boutique hotel for us. Honorio and his staff were very helpful. We especially loved the views from the balconies, and had dinner there two out of the three nights we stayed because the atmosphere, food, and views were so great. The place was so reasonably priced as well. Puts the big resort hotels to,shame.do ask for room one, as it has great views and an unusual brick domed ceiling and bath

Room Tip: Ask for room one for a great private room.

This is the best hotel in Isla Mujeres.
there is a breathtaking view of the private beach and infinity pool from each and every room, there is also a big balcony and a hammock in every room. this hotel is quiet, private and very high maintained.
Orio and the staff are charming, helpful and caring, and always with a big smile.
they were at our service 24/7, we had a a daily visit from the maid, the hotel restaurant offers a great menu, there are 2 kayaks you can take from the private beach.
waking up in this place is just amazing.
we can't wait to go back.

Just back from a week at this hotel muy especial. The rooms are set up as if they are balconies overlooking the beautiful sea... and everyone has the best view in the house. The manager Honorio was unfailingly helpful - organizing a taxi, cooking an early breakfast, and his staff were all super helpful. The hotel rooms are kept clean... as is the swimming pool. Breakfast of coffee, toast and juice is brought to your room at around 8:30 a.m. You can also go down the steps onto the hotel's sandy beach and set off for some fun snorkeling in the crystal clear shallows. This is an amazing hotel. Five stars for La Joya!

We had originally booked a trip to Holbox to swim with the Whale Sharks, however the are not in Holbox this year and are close to Cancun. We quickly had to change our travel plans. We did not want to stay in Cancun and found this island on tripadvisor-Isla Mujeres. We stayed at Hotel La Joya based on the previous wonderful reviews on tripadvisor. We could not have asked for a better hotel. We do not like resorts and crowds-and wanted a smaller hotel. The hotel was clean, hotel staff very friendly, and it was on the water. Each room has a balcony that overlooks the water. They even have a small private beach where you could take out Kayaks and snorkel. They had room service and could either deliver you food/drinks to your room or by the pool. The food is really good. We could not believe the price! We would gladly return and hope to some day. Of note-the whale sharks were phenomenal and we saw over 20 of them!
