“Superb location, don't expect to much of the building itself”
Reviewed 20 January 2012

This hotel is located in a little island part of the island. Superb beach and location. Living in Amsterdam, the sun and paisage here was a total dream and helped my mind to get relaxed. If you make this pick because you like the location this is the right choice. If you do because you think it is a fancy hotel you are absolutely not right. This hotel has been in service for years, and indeed after one of the hurricanes it was closed for a long time. Avalon put some paint on it and re-opened it but mainteinance is far from idea, you can be shocked if you expect a classy resort. If you get a good deal this place is amazing...

Room Tip: Ask for a room with sea view. No balconies in the main building but at least the views from the wind...

Our thought was that it was the best place on the island. Away from the peddelars who after saying no a million times really get on our nerves. That alone makes this place a gem for me and my family. We had the best views and the best beaches and snorkeling. King's Bath was awesome, and snorkeling around the piers and docks was great as well. We saw a lot of barracudas, sting-rays, crabs, and even an octopus which the highlight. The beds are extremely hard, hard enough that I came home with bruises on my hips. But overall I thought it was the best location and the staff were very friendly as well.

Is the location good? Yes. Is the staff friendly and helpful? Yes. Is the breakfast buffet good? Yes. Other than those things this hotel is unbelievably shabby, decrepit and brokendown. Believe all of the negative reviews and DO NOT stay at this hotel! There are many better options. We booked five nights here with a little apprehension based upon the mixed reviews but we were last minute travelers and availability was limited on the island. We experienced a flooded room, no hot water, plugged drains, boarded up gym with non-functioning equipment, bad beds, swim up bar closed, loud banging noises and on and on. Fortunately, the manager agreed to refund our stay and we were able to find other accommadations. I did not expect the Ritz Carlton and I do not have an axe to grind but the reality of this place is just so disapointing. I feel truly bad for the people that work here and have to deal with the day to day problems. Whomever owns this property is to blame and should be ashamed. As noted in other reviews, this could be a spectacular place

Whatever way you want to look at it, the Avalon Reef (one of four hotels in the family), keeps attracting Isla devotees, beach bums, Caribbean Canadians, International Yachts, Cancun escapees, sunset gazers and worshipers, families and romantics. They don't come for the so, so suites or tower rooms, erratic plumming or the shabby pool table off the lobby. Although the suites are better because they are right on the ocean, I can only speak for the suites being a time share owner. The owners keep squeezing the facility, equipment, maintenance and structure. Beds are rock hard, TV's vintage 80's, no more microwaves, rusted bar fridges, Wi-fi you pay an exorbitant rate for. The whole place has a vintage 80's old style Mexico feel, prices included. You don't pay much for being on the best beach anywhere in Isla. I have been to the two other Cancun hotels and can say they are better but just don't have the setting or beach. If you look at what the clients do while staying at the Avalon, they lay on the beach, enjoy the view, swim in safe circumstances, risk walking on the two decrepit piers, snorkel, drink on the beach, walk to the village and eat. If they couldn't sleep in the beds, they sleep on the beach, if they didn't get warm water with their shower, they swim in the warm ocean water. The sun is better because the beach faces south and is protected from the breezes. I give this PROPERTY an overall rating of excellent but as for the facility, you are going into the eco resort zone soon.

Room Tip: Studio suites best. On either side is great but south facing has the sunset and is protected from th...

Conditions of the Avalon Reef Club have declined over the years, but some people just want to complain about absolutely everything. My husband and I choose to accentuate the positive.
--The staff: AMAZING! Employees are smiling, happy, and most willing to serve. We were addresed by our first names by most of the staff on the second day we were there, and we genuinely appreciated their attempts to make us feel at home. The front desk staff was always friendly & helpful, our room was always clean and stocked with everything we truly needed (who in their right mind wants a clock radio on vacation? NOT ME!) Maintenance handled a problem we reported within minutes. The bartenders quickly learned our drink preference and would pour our drinks anytime he saw us approaching the bar. The waiters always had coffee waiting at our table before we sat down. It was obvious the staff went to great lengths to get to know their guests.
--The breakfast buffet: DELICIOUS! They provide a wonderful spread of varying choices, and their cook stands at the grill ready to make pancakes, waffles, or omelets to your liking. We ate so much at breakfast each day that we didn't even WANT lunch, so we would opt for an early dinner, thus eating only two meals per day (which saved us from being supreme gulttons for the week).
--Dinners: WONDERFUL! This was the first year that we chose to purchase the package of 6 dinners. We chose this option for one simple reason...we've done all of the sightseeing we want to do in the area, and we wanted a truly relaxing go-nowhere, do-nothing visit. We enjoyed delicious soups, fresh salads, and entrees like shish kabobs with steak, pork, chicken & fish...flaming shrimp with mango sauce...smoked salmon fettucine with vodka sauce...stuffed chicken breast with steamed vegetables & rice...there was not one meal that we didn't enjoy. On two separate nights, the restaurant staff set up beautiful lighted tipis, lighted glass tables & tiki torches on the beach and treated us to a very romantic beach dinner complete with soft jazz music. It was magical!
--NEW Activities Director (he'd only been working one week when we arrived) is fun, not pushy. He offered various activities, but never tried to force or persuade anyone to join his games.
--The Views: Epic! Turn one way to see sunrises over a rocky shoreline, and turn the other way to see sunsets from a sandy beach. You can stand on the sidewalk and watch the sun go down, then turn around and watch the moon rise. The property is dotted with shady thatch-roofed palapas, gazebos with benches, and umbrellas with lounge chairs.
Yes, the Avalon has a great deal of updating & repairs that need accomplished, but with the ownership in question over the past few years and the property now under new management, we're willing to ride those details out until changes come. The staff deserves kudos and high praise for doing their best to make the most of what's available to them, and I commend their efforts. One would be hard pressed to find as nice a place to stay for the money.

Avalon Reef sits on a small island adjoining Isla Mujeres, connected by a short wooden causeway. The hotel started life as one of the Presidente chain, then became a time share, and is now part of Avalon Resorts. Everyone on the island has a story about the place, especially about a former owner now in jail in Chicago. But don’t be deterred by stories. Avalon Reef is gorgeous and a terrific bargain. Isla Mujeres is not very big, about 7 km long end to end. Most of the action is on the north end, on two busy downtown avenues. Avalon Reef is just a few blocks walk from downtown, but because it is separated from Isla, it feels much more like a resort. The hotel sits on a reef, you can rent snorkel equipment and examine fish right off the hotel entrance. The outdoor bar/lounge is adjacent to another beach strip facing west – beautiful sunset! Comments on this site complain a bit about maintenance etc., mostly (I think) from people burned by the now defunct timeshare scheme. Admittedly, the place isn’t 100%. For example, late in the day the shower temperature swung back and forth, from hot to lukewarm – but never earlier in the day. But as has been said here by others, it’s an astonishingly good bargain. We went on a package deal, and four days there didn’t cost too much more than the retail cost of two airfares. I think Avalon is trying to build up its clientele, so over time the price can be expected to increase. Even at a higher price, though, Avalon still offers something unique on Isla Mujeres: a resort feel that seems far from the noise and crowds of the downtown yet is only a five minute walk to it. We’re coming back soon. Loved our stay there.

My family has a beachfront condo in Cancun so we are very familiar with the area. While we love all that Cancun has to offer - fine dining, shopping, nightlife, attractions - we always go to Isla Mujeres for 1-2 nights to enjoy the low key island vibe. On our last trip, the condo we usually rent out was occupied so we decided to stay at the Avalon. We rented 2 connecting junior suites. When added together, the rooms offered the amenities of a single suite (one room had a microwave; the other didn't. One room had a lamp; the other didn't. One room had a coffee maker; the other didnt). Additionally, the property is in need of some major maintenance and updating. Overall, the hotel was okay, but nothing more, and certainly not enough to warrant the $280/room/night price tag. I would not return.
