“Always a great meal”
Reviewed 17 April 2014

El Varadero is one of our favorite restaurants on Isla. We love the variety of ways they cook fish, and the presentation is always beautiful! I could eat the tronchas (fried fish chunks) and cuban beans and rice every day. The setting here is lovely, but the mosquitoes can be annoying at sunset if there is no breeze. Fortunately, there usually is.

“Cool little Place!!”
Reviewed 10 April 2014

Small little restaurant right on the channel. Really enjoyed the atmosphere watching the boats roll by and the band playing. Off the beaten path a bit but a good find. I had a cuban sandwich and I was very impressed.

“gotta LOVE garlic”
Reviewed 23 March 2014

We've been here before - and liked it. But this time it was awful. The place of tostones had about 6 pieces, and they tasted only of garlic. The fish soup (which came highly recommended) - the same. Garlic broth with little fish. My husband had grilled fish - overcooked and tasteless. I can't remember why we loved it before!

“Worst meal on the island”
Reviewed 20 March 2014

I love cuban food and am sorry to say my worst (and most expensive!) meal on the island was at El Varadero. :(

After hearing others rave about this place, we checked it out with another couple. We arrived at 7:00 for dinner and were told they had already sold out of many things. They only had one chicken dish left, one shrimp dish left and had run out of other items from the menu. I could understand this if we were showing up at 9:00pm or 10:00 pm for dinner...but this was 7:00!

We ordered tostones and they were mediocre. Dry and plain. Our group ordered the chicken fricase (they had one order left), another ordered the shrimp and myself and the other guest ordered the fish special. The chicken was greasy, but the meat was dry. The fish dishes were inedible. The fish was mealy and had no flavor. The only dish that was decent was the shrimp dish...they were pan fried with butter and garlic. The guys in the group had a few margaritas and they were so strong us gals couldn't drink them (the guys didn't seem to mind!) It was almost completely full of tequila! (and no, we're not lightweights!)

Each couple spent over $70 on a meal that the majority of us didn't even eat! Very disappointing.

“Excellent cuban sandwich”
Reviewed 21 February 2014

This was one of the best places we ate in Isla Mujeres. The Cuban sandwich was delicious and a nice change from all the Mexican food we ate. My husband also had the shrimp and they were huge. He said they were also very good. It is located by the marina and we sat outside by the water and enjoyed the sites and sounds on the water.
