“The sound of the surf”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

We stayed in two different units in April . They are the perfect size for a couple. Big showers with lots of hot water, kitchens well equipped if you want to eat in [we did not] and very comfortable queen size beds.
But the magic of this place is the ocean - directly across the street. The sound of the surf will lull you to sleep, and if you are an early bird, the sunrises are exquisite.

This was our second visit to Casitas del Mar and this time we booked 10 days. We were there in late Jan 2014. As with our first visit, the hospitality was inpeccable! You cannot find better hosts or a cuter more functional casita on all the island. And we met wonderful Canadians there too who we shared coffee with every morning and are still in contact with!

Hope to return in 2015!

If you are looking for the perfect combination of ocean front peace and tranquility with an easy access to buoyant fun activities, Casa del Mar is ideal. Clean, comfortable rooms, excellent and helpful hosts, ideal location, this corner of paradise exceeded all my expectations. Bob and Joyce made certain everything was taken care of, from the travel details to the stay itself. They know the island inside and out and always made it their goal to make sure everything was taken care of and enjoyable. I have been recommending this lovely place to everyone I know. I cant thank them enough for such an excellent time on the island.

I stumbled upon these gorgeous Casistas while out for a walk one morning. I had been staying at a hotel downtown during the Easter holiday, it was muy noisy and I needed to escape that noise. While on my walk I saw a vacancy sign at Casistas del Mar. I went to investigate the accommodations and spoke with Bob and Joyce who have a home directly behind the Casistas. They showed me the unit that was available and I took it starting the following day. It was extremely clean, modern, quiet and had all of the amenities of home. The wi-fi was quite fast and there was never a disruption during my stay. I enjoyed my stay there and will definitely stay again when I return to Isla Mujeres. I give the Casistas my five star rating, just try it, you will love it. *****

Room Tip: They are all good.

We just returned from a short stay at Casitas del Mar #1. Wow! It's so much better than a hotel. Joyce and Bob give you a packet that outlines transportation options. We took the cheapest - a bus, cab, the ferry and a second cab after we got to Isla Mujeres to the Casitas. It was around $70 total (round trip for two).

The Casitas is clean and it smelled lovely! There are ceiling fans and a remote control unit which is great for blocking out the sound of the mopeds whizzing by. The bed is soft and comfortable with great sheets. The water gets hot and the shower is large. They provide soft toilet tissue and boxes of Kleenex. There's an alarm clock and purified water to drink, there were even a few beers in the fridge! They had a books, a deck of cards and chairs for sitting outside under the palapas. There are cleaning materials, seasonings, even a lighter for candles.

The room is private and the view is spectacular! The Casitas is across the street from the 'rocky' beach. You can't swim there but you can catch a cab for $3 to North beach (per cab not per person). It's still cheaper than staying directly on the beach and you get more for your money. La Gloria is a quiet, safe, affordable town with cabs that are cheap and readily available.

Their recommendations helped us choose restaurants by providing hours, walking directions and cuisine. There's a corner store and my favorite restaurants are in walking distance. La Bruja has great food for about $10 including drink. El Paraiso has a healthy breakfast (fresh squeezed fruit/veggie juice & a bowl of fresh fruit, yogurt and granola for about $5). You will pass some shaggy looking but harmless neighborhood dogs on your walk.

My tips have nothing to do with the lodging. 1) Bring a calculator to convert $. 2) Bring a Spanish English dictionary. 3) Don't order pizza. 4) Bring more $ than you think you'll need including some US dollars if you're American. Some of the merchants in Centro take them & it's easier to negotiate. 5) Skip the traditional currency exchange and use your debit card to get pesos out of the ATM at the airport.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Casitas del Mar and I can't wait to return!

Room Tip: It's on a street so you will have to deal with either the sound of mopeds or A/C unit noise. Bu...

We just returned from 5 days/4 nights at Casitas del Mar. It was our first trip to Isla Mujeres, and we are already planning our next trip in the fall! Everything about the casitas was perfect. We were in Casita #1, and though I may be biased, I think it is the best, and just a tad larger than the other casitas. The view from the room was wonderful, the kitchen well equipped, very traditional decorations which adds to the charm, and ample outdoor space for dining or simply relaxing and enjoying the sound of the ocean.

From the moment we arrived Joyce and Bob made sure everything was perfect. While the beach is quite rocky, it is also very private. We often referred to it as "our beach" or "playa privada." We found that if you walked out about 100 yards or so into the water, there were several very large sand bars where you could stand and enjoy playing in the waves. We went to Chedraui (similar to a Wal-mart) and purchased water shoes for around $120mp and inflatable rafts for about $50mp (don't buy these items in el Centro unless you want to pay around $450mp for shoes and $100mp for a raft). These items made the beach in front of the casitas very enjoyable, although we are also a younger couple so rough waves may not be as desirable to others. If you want to go to Playa Norte, its a quick and cheap cab ride away. We also found Garrafon de Castilla to be very nice for a more relaxing beach experience. Its a $50mp entry fee which includes a nice beach, a lounge chair, and umbrella. There is also food and drink for purchase, as well as lockers to rent if you wish. Snorkel gear (face mask and snorkel) can be rented for $45mp, and snorkeling fins can also be rented for an additional $45mp (although they aren't really necessary). The snorkeling is quite good, with numerous types of colorful fish and crystal clear water.

As for dining, I recommend trying to eat at the local places in La Gloria if you can. Even if you don't speak any Spanish, you will be able to get by. The "local" experience was far more enjoyable for us than than commercialized "tourist" zone in el Centro. The ceviche from La Bruja is excellent, and fresh shrimp from doña Rosita is also quite good. However, El Charco was our favorite restaurant. We ate there quite a few times, but by our second visit Desi and Raul already knew our names and were very welcoming. The food is excellent and quite affordable. If you wish to cook at the casitas (we cooked all our breakfasts and a few other meals here) the Super Xpress is the larger of the local grocery stores, and only a few blocks from the casitas. The farmers market is also great for fresh fruits and vegetables. Just a few blocks from the Super Xpress is a local tortilleria, which I definitely recommend. We paid around $25mp for a kilo of tortillas and this was more than enough for our visit (the boyfriend is Mexican so we eat tortillas with just about every meal, haha) We tried Dulce Tentación one night for dessert, but weren't that impressed. Instead, I recommend walking across the street from the Super Xpress during the weekend and visiting the street fair. There you can purchase a large order or churros for around $25mp and they are delicious. Or, perhaps enjoying some ice cream and listening to the waves under the palapas back at the casita.

If you are more into the party scene or always needing something to do, perhaps try one of the resorts in Cancun. But if you are looking for a very relaxing and laid back vacation, this is definitely the place. The days just seem so much longer when you are taking it slow and easy, and the vacation is much more enjoyable.

Overall, I cannot say enough good things about our trip. The casitas are wonderful, the neighborhood is great -- very safe and relaxing. The people of Isla are so kind, and Bob and Joyce really do seem to go above and beyond for their guests! We can't wait to return this fall!

We very much enjoyed our trip, this being our first visit to Isla Mujeres. Joyce and Bob were wonderful hosts. They provided a wealth of information even before our arrival--so helpful to both first time and repeat visitors. Our room was very comfortable and the location is great. The beach on the ocean side of the island is quite rocky and dramatic, but the shore adjacent to the Casitas is quite accessible, much more so than many other places. Many other amenities very close as well: restaurants, grocery store, bakery, pharmacy, etc.

The Casitas are situated facing the ocean which is perfect, but the road runs directly in front of the property and there is a fair amount of traffic and road noise. The large sliding glass doors at the front of the room left us feeling a bit on display when inside with lights on, and a bit closed in when they were closed with the curtain pulled.
