To be fair, I probably didn't do enough research when I booked this hotel. We had spent two glorious weeks in Akumal before going to Isla and our expectations were maybe off base a little.

Pros for us were
- Location cannot be beat . Right on Playa Norte and minutes from all the lovely restaurants and shops in downtown area.
- Rooms kept very clean.
- Staff at reception and Como No restaurant very friendly and helpful.

Afraid the Cons for us outweighed the pros.
- The ongoing construction in the area is not pleasant. It reminded me of Spain's tourism growth of the 70s.
- In particular, the top end of Hidalgo between the two phases is a sandpit, as they are readying it for paving. While paving is a good thing, walking in this area is dangerous at night as it is poorly lit. Anyone with even minor mobility issues may have a problem as , for example , there are huge gouges and holes in which to twist an ankle.
- The hotel is almost too modern for our tastes. It has the clinical feel of a hospital on all floors above the 1st floor as everything seems so white, with no warmth in the decor. There is absolutely nothing Mexican about it. It felt as if you could be almost anywhere in the world.

We will probably go back to Isla, but not to Ixchel Beach Hotel.

Ixchel Beach Hotel was a good place to start our trip in the Cancun area. Its a $650 Peso cab ride from the airport to Gran Puerto Juarez where you catch the $35 Peso ferry across to the island. We walked to the hotel from the dock down the pedestrian streets but if you have lots of luggage then grab a cab. Finding the hotel entrance is a bit tricky the first time.

Its location is right on a beach that is sheltered from the Easterly winds that were ever present. The beach is quite spacious and you have free use of the beach chairs while you watch the sun go down at night. Kind of a rarity in the Cancun area. We didn't eat/drink at the hotel as it didn't look all that interesting. Its only about 2 blocks from the start of the main pedestrian walkway with all the restaurants which is nice.

The rooms are large, bright and clean but the view isn't anything to write home about unless you are on the end of the building that faces the beach. Ours had a full kitchen so you could cook if you wanted to. The service was really good and the rooms were kept spotless.

Deiby at the concierge desk was very helpful in setting up our golf cart and car rentals while we stayed there. She left a very positive impression upon us.

I just got back from a long weekend vacation with family to Ixchel. Our first time to the Island and at this hotel. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the ferry and just a few blocks from the main restaurant/shopping strip (Hidalgo Street) so it is very convenient. The hotel itself is divided into two "phases" which are separated by a street they are building now. Both phases look pretty much the same from the outside and have the same staff. It seems most of the phase 1 rooms are condo owned, and can also be reserved via vrbo.com. We booked through the hotel and were assigned to phase 2. Our rooms were fine (one supposedly had a partial ocean view but definitely did not), very clean and sparse. Falt screen TV and DVD player. Fairly small and simple for the price, but I think you are paying for the proximity to the beach, not the room. One highlight was the shower--tons of hot water and great water pressure. A pleasure after a long day at the beach!

The hotel is right on North Beach and seems to be on the widest and cleanest section. They provide beach chairs, towels, and umbrellas. We never had a problem getting a chair with an umbrella, and the staff were extremely helpful and considerate. One thing we didn't know--phase 1 gets the right side of the beach area, phase 2 gets the left. Although the whole beach is nice, the right side (phase 1) is clearly better. No sandbags and more chairs/umbrellas. We managed to work out a deal where we could sit on the right side, but if I were to come back, I would stay in phase 1 just to not have to deal with this issue. Also, hotel had a nice gym and wireless internet in rooms.

The water is amazing--not too cold, crystal clear and clean, and not too crowded. Waiters from the hotel restaurant "Como No" come by whenever you need anything offering drinks/food which, by the way, are amazing. We were so impressed both with the service and the quality of the food (unusual for beach food!). We often ate both breakfast and lunch on the beach! We had perfect weather--no rain, barely a cloud!

Just note that there is construction (building the street) going on now and will probably be going on for a while to come. You could barely hear it from the beach (or the room) but it was noticeable.

Recommendations in town include: Cool Ice cream (end of Hidalgo St) for best ice cream ever and Brisas (on the corner) for whole grilled snapper.

This is not my first time visiting Isla Mujeres, and definitely not my last! We enjoyed our hotel room (two bedroom suite) and thought the beach was absolutely beautiful. The hotel is very close to the downtown area, and you can walk to many restaurants and shopping. Our favorite restaurant at the hotel was Comono. The shrimp and calamari were excellent and the buckets of beer were good too! We ate at the Sunset Grille one morning (located by the beach), but did not like the food and service was terrible. Other than that - great service - friendly staff and very clean hotel! We'll definitely be back!!!!!

We stayed at Ixchel II condo Jan. 31-Feb 7 at unit 609/610 and loved it. It was Ocean front directly on North Beach. We rented via VRBO and everything was perfect. The unit is immaculate, 2 kings.2 baths, large living room and full kitchen. Huge wraparound balcony . the weather could have been better, mostly windy and cool., but the condo made up for it. We also loved Isla. This is our 4th trip to the Mayan Riveria, and our first condo experience. We have been to Playa Del Carmen ( 5th ave. only) several times and to Cozumel once for the day. We found both of these areas to be overrun with aggresive vendors and not a pleasent expierience. Isla was the complete opposite. With the exception of a small area near the ferry dock, the vendors are much less aggressive. A simple no thanks was all it took. We toured the island and were very impressed with the overall level of service and friendliness we received. The locals try and help with whatever you ask/want and are genuine in their friendliness.
We would go back to Isla in a heartbeet, and we would stay in the same units

What a great vacation at Ixchel Beach Hotel! We stayed in Unit #307 in the first tower and I couldn't have asked for anything more for the price. Ixchel's units are individually owned condos, so they aren't all the same. Ours was tastefully decorated in a simple island style (think Jimmy Buffett with more class). We tipped the maid well and had no problems with money, cell phones, or laptop left in the room and Frida made cute statues with the towels and flowers every day (see picture). It didn't have a balcony, and yes the view is partial. But, you have a small fridge, A/C, wireless internet, ceiling fan, and most importantly, the perfect location! Who wants to hang out in their room anyway! Playa Norte has the best beach, with calm waves (Carribean side has huge, crashy waves and lots of wind). It's also nice and convenient to downtown shops and restaurants, just a quick walk. We loved that we were a quick stroll to the action, but in a nice quiet calm, location when we wanted to relax. Kudos to the owner of #307, I have nothing but wonderful things to say.

As for Ixchel in a whole, here are some suggestions:
- At least one person working at the front desk area speaking at a little bit of English would be good. I speak a little Spanish and I still struggled with them a few times. We waited for Giovanni to be working if we had questions, he's good.
- The banana coladas at Comono are fabulous. But. The second day my hubby ordered them, the three guys standing around the bar area told him they didn't have bananas and we'd have to go to the bar on the other side. Seriously. That's some crappy service. And we tipped them well before that. The banana coladas are 65 pesos each (around $5), which is the most expensive drink we had on the island. Bring it to me.
- The water stopped working twice during our stay. We are guessing it's a water pressure issue around the time most people are showering in the morning 9-10am. But not fun when you are in the shower, soapy, and the water stops. For a 1/2 hour. Shampoo dries in your hair in that time, incase you were wondering... If it's an on-going issue, warn the guests that they may want to consider showering at a different time of day. We figured it out the hard way.

Overally, I highly recommend Ixchel Beach Hotel. We walked around and checked out the other places I had considered and let's just say...I made the best choice.

Have a great trip!

We just returned from ten fantastic days on Isla Mujeres staying at Ixchel Phase 1. The accommodations were booked thru www.vrbo.com which I would highly recommend exploring. Everything went as planned.

The hotel staff was extrememly helpful and pleasant. The beach is wonderful. Our suite was extremely comfortable. Great water pressure in the shower although the water is EXTREMELY hot. We loved having the kitchen in the unit for breakfast and simple snacks. The Comuno staff were great and we enjoyed our food and drinks as we sat on the beach.

The location is great. Walking distance to and from the ferry, restaurants and shopping. The super market is five blocks away. We rented a golf cart twice to explore the island and we took a trip to Isla Contoy. Contoy is beautiful but make sure the trip out there will have calm water. Our one hour plus boat ride was not a pleasure. Also find out the tide. When we were there it was low tide so we were snorkeling in extremely shallow waters.

We were pleased with our decision to stay at Ixchel Beach and can't wait to go back next year.
