Among the many free cultural activities that take place in Mérida, there is the night's visit to the graveyard where a guide tells you all the legends and stories of the tombs in there. There is musical ambientation and lots of things to learn.

Our tour took us there and I thought - who wants to see graves? BUT it is all rather fascinating with many large family graves seemingly built above the ground and decorated with love

The graves, mausoleums and ossuaries tell of a mixing of cultures. The Mayan tradition is strong with the bodies of the dead exhumed, bones cleaned and put in boxes to allow the grave to be reused. Abandoned graves which had bones in old wooden boxes now show the bones of the dead in full view, boxes rotted away. there is a night tour but I preferred the daytime.

We breezed through here twice with one time early in the day so comfortable and the other time late - hot!
Here is a lot to see and take o here as the cemetery is divided by religion and money.
Like most cemeteries it’s a little haunting but I would recommend a visit.
Wheelchair friendly. Please be respectful.

Go there in the early evening before dark, as it gets extremely hot. There is a lot of walking as the place is huge, and you can go off the main drive through and walk among the large and small tombs--all picturesque and colorful. Wonderful photo opportunities if you are a camera buff.
