Our family of five (three college-age children) absolutely loved Quinta Tamarindo. The house is spacious, well-equipped (a fantastic kitchen), spotless, and tastefully decorated. Recently renovated by the owners--a charming, welcoming, and always helpful pair of multilingual young architects (Spanish, English, German, French ...)--the house and expansive grounds are a beautiful mix of the old and new. We ended up spending more time at the house than we had expected--lounging around the pool, reading in the comfy sofas, chatting with the owners, and observing the small menagerie of outdoor pets which roam the main yard (two dogs, 'raoul' (a pig), chickens, roosters--all friendly and well-behaved). The house and walled-in gardens (including a separate 'bedroom' garden) were an oasis of calm amidst the bustle of Merida. Walking to the center of town takes about 20-25 minutes (which we felt safe doing even late at night), though if you have a car the drive into town is easy and, after you have done the walk a few times, appreciated. (I assume there are also buses but we did not use them.) The owners and their young son live in a smaller house on the property and share the grounds. No AC (though the owners plan to add it soon), but the fans were more than sufficient in the high-ceilinged rooms during our December visit. We would not have used AC even if it had been available. Off-street parking inside the grounds. Highly recommended.
