“This hotel is what the charm of Mexico is all about”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014

As suggested by my friend, a Merida resident and expat American, my daugher and I stayed at Hotel Casa San Angel after being personally escorted to the hotel by one of Merida's motorcycle policemen who observed us looking for the address in frustration.Where do you find that? In Merida that's where!
We were more than pleased with the ambiance of the hotel, the staff and the utterly charming surroundings. Our room had twin beds with lovely traditional woven cotton bedspreads, windows that opened to the sounds of birds and a breeze. The hotel is only two stories with a columned very wide tiled veranda surrounding the central courtyard. Beautiful mature vines and cascading flowers adorning the many wrought iron balustrades set off the architecture with vaulted ceilings. The owner is on the premises and was very accomodating.
Well situated at the beginning of Paseo Montejo and the old center of the city, El Centro.

After a few days of relaxation in Isla Mujeres, our New Orleans friends on the regatta crewing team headed to Mérida. They must have looked a bit lost as they received a motorcycle police escort to the arched entrance of Hotel Casa San Ángel. Joining us for breakfast after a restful night, our NOLA guest were spellbound by the Central Mexico charm offered by this family owned business. Tranquill and culturally rich in every architectural detail, Hotel Casa San Ángel is our #1 recommendation for all of our friends.

Very pleased with everything @ Casa San Angel! Very we'll run by on site owner, a gracious lady and hostess. Immaculate rooms and grounds, great location at the beginning of the Paseo and a few minute walk to El Centro. The on site restaurant was very good and possibly the best Margaritas in Merida.
We have already recommended it to someone headed to Merida!

Mucho gusto!

Room Tip: All rooms face open air interior courtyard and some noise travels up but not offensive.

We had stayed in Merida last year, near the Plaza Grande, the historical town centre with its fortress-like cathedral (oldest one in Mexico), its other grand very old historical buildings and the busy treed plaza filled with venders, entertainment and just ordinary Mexicans.
During our daily walks we often ended up for coffee and pastries at the Tala restaurant connected to the Hotel San Angel. We would sit in the courtyard among the tropical plants admiring the wall murals of trees and birds and sky and soak up the ambiance.
So on our return this year we decided to stay at this boutique hotel. We were not disappointed.
The hotel is on a quiet corner on the edge of the old town and at the end of the Paseo de Montejo. One direction from the hotel it is a 10 minute walk through the narrow busy streets to the historic centre. The other direction is the Paseo de Montejo, a broad tree lined boulevard lined with mansions built during the henequen boom in the late 1800 and early 1900s when Merida was rumoured to be the wealthiest city in the world. Here you can visit two excellent sites, the Casa Museo Montes Molina, a mansion still owned and furnished by an original family. Tours are given in both Spanish and English. The other "must see" is the Museo Regional de Antropologia located in the magnificent Palacio Canton.
After your activities you can return to the oasis, Casa San Angel, have a dip in heir small pool, enjoy a coffee and pastry, browse in their excellent Mexican craft store, read a book in their lobby or retire to you room, perhaps try out your hammock. Our room was a comfortable size with all amenities of a good hotel and tasteful Mexican decor. We ate several meals in the restaurant, all excellent. There is a nice mix of conventional items, some Mexican, Mayan and Persian. The restaurant is open 7:30 in the morning until 7:30 in the evening. We were pleased with the tour to Celestun that we booked through the hotel desk; the staff were polite and helpful.
A word of advice: the hotel leaves a container of repellent in your room. I suggest you use it as along with the resident cats and two parrots there are some no-see-ums in the treed courtyard.

We fell in love with Casa San Angel the minute we entered the charming plant-filled patio – even the walls are quite beautifully painted with flowers and birds. The hotel is situated on a pretty, quiet street which is only a few blocks from the city center and is surrounded by restaurants, museums, and galleries. Our rooms were good-sized and light-filled, with comfortable beds and a hammock in every room. We had excellent meals at the restaurant and could probably have eaten every meal there successfully. This was the only hotel we stayed in which had a big jug of purified water available to guests as well as bottled water. The only complaint I might have is that the bedside lights, while very beautiful, are not bright enough to read by. When I asked, we were given small battery-powered lights, but they were not really bright enough for older eyes.

I have traveled throughout Mexico looking for quality fold art and craft, and the small gift shop (100% Mexico) has one of the best collections of fine pieces I have ever seen in one place. The staff was very helpful in guiding us around town, both in our car and on foot. I will definitely stay there on my next trip to Merida.

Loved this hotel..like walking into a chapter of "like water for chocolate". The staff is lovely, the hotel is a dream of magical realism and the parrots in the lobby are wild and exotic. This was a great way to begin a lovely trip in Mexico. You will enjoy this hotel...

Room Tip: Enjoy the hammock--there's one in each room.

My wife and I are very pleased that we decided to stay at the Hotel Casa San Angel. The location is perfect and the rooms lovely, especially if one wants a more authentic room (as opposed to simply the most modern or most luxurious) although the room was plenty modern and plenty luxurious. The only thing lacking is a little refrigerator to get ice when the restaurant is closed (they will happily bring up ice pronto when the restaurant is open).

Whether one is doing Merida on foot or by car, this is where one wants to be. It is quieter than in the very center of the old town although that area is still very accessible on foot.

The ambiance is great with parrots, domesticated cats and various song birds. The center of the building is open air which makes for a nice place to sit and read in the mid afternoon when it is hot and one wants to kick back for a couple of hours.

The owner, Homa, is a lovely individual as are the other members of her family if they happen to be there. One is made to feel right at home and that ones interests and/or needs are of the utmost importance.

In sum, just a delightful relaxing and fairly priced place to stay in the wonderful and interesting city of Merida. We hope to do that again soon.
