I spent three weeks in Merida and found el Hoyo to be a nice respite from the heat and action of central Merida. The cafe has four separate areas to relax to match your mood. You can meet with friends, read a book, down a cappuccino, eat a bite (try the Willy sandwich--delicious), or pound away at your laptop (free internet). They also serve wine and deserts. I got hooked on the fruit frapps, which were especially refreshing as the temperature in the city rose. In addition, the music is great. Put all that together with a very friendly staff and it amounts to a great cafe. I kept thinking I was in one of those neighborhood cafes found in Portland or San Francisco, except everyone was speaking Spanish.
Note: Not sure why there is a photo of el gran cafe here, but the proper address is el Hoyo, Calle 62 #468 x 57 y 55 centro.
