“We liked it!”
Reviewed 25 October 2011

We stayed here just for two separate nights in August, 2011, and had no problems at all. We found the place to be clean and welcoming. The rooms were fairly big, nice bathroom, view of the pool, everything you wanted, really. We found the service to be very good. When we returned for the second night, the room smelt of cigarrettes. We were going to put up with it, then decided that we should call it to the attention of the staff. The young man was most apologetic and said the rule is that people don't smoke in the rooms, but it does happen. He offered immediately to move us to another room, and indeed, came and helped us move our things.

There are only two negative things we would say: one is that the hotel, while comfortable, has little character, and could be anywhere (some people of course may prefer this!), and the other is that when we were leaving, we were asked to wait while they radioed for a member of staff to check our room. This made us feel anxious because we had a bus to catch, and it took several minutes, but also slightly offended that they felt the need to do this. I understand they do this with everyone, but it would have been better to have been warned!

We stayed here in late June at the recommendation of friends. It was a series of nightmares. We should have left when one of my kids pointed to one of the cracked columns in the courtyard and asked if it were safe. The insect infestation (i.e., ants and flies) was incredible, and the worn-out condition of the place was notable. The staff were less than helpful and the foot was awful. With all the choices in Merida, I am so sorry we made this one. It's true that when you have a terrible experience at a hotel, the whole trip to that city is shot. My kids now loathe a wonderful city like Merida because of this place. Do everyone a favor, tear down this old colonial death trap and put up something safer.

I cannot believe some of the reviews on thisa hotel claiming that the service was bad, it astonishes me really given the courtesy we were shown at all times and the overall helpfulness of the staff.
The building itself is absolutely beautifully kept. It is clean, modern and tasteful. The rooms are spacious and clean with safes, flat screen TV, a big bathroom and a view of the pool or the garden. The pool area is small but very nice and there is a good restaurant beside it. It is about 10 mins walk from the main square so is close to many good bars ans eateries.
We found the Gran Yucatan luxurious and at the price we paid, excellent value too. Readers thinking of coming to Merida and staying here, have absolutely no fears about this place. It is as nice as any we have used in 8 weeks travelling through Mexico and Central America.

This is the hotel we chose to stay at with all of our family during the one week we stayed in Merida for our weddng. Being our wedding we wanted somewhere relaxing to stay in but it turned out to be complete opposite.
1. We had booked 8 rooms 2 months in advance and when we got there they only had 7 available despite the confirmation email.
2. One of our friends was arriving from abroad late at night and when she checked in at 3am the day before the wedding the room had not been made from the previous stay- completely dirty, she had to wait for 1.5h to even get in the room.
3. As we were getting married the hotel had promised us a "special room" but when we got there it was like any other room. We mentioned it to the manager and she told us that there as nothing she could do about it.
4. When we checked out they charged us wrongly. Being very uset with the entire experince we asked to speak to the manager again and we were told we could not. We insited that if they did not charge us the correct rate as per our confirmation we would call the police- the hotel staff then took our suitcases and said that if we called the police they would not return our suitcases. Being late to leave for our honey moon we had no choice but to leave but this is an experiece that I woul not want anybody else to go through. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!

We checked in at 1:30 am and the front desk was so kind and helpful. They apologized the restaurant was closed but offered to get anything for us at the local grocery store. The room was spacious and comfortable. The only item that took getting used to was having to use the key card to operate the air conditioning. The room was boiling when we arrived, but soon cooled off.

We spend 2 nights in Real Yucatan in a pool-side room and it is not 5 star acommodiation.
Located in the historical center of Merida, has a wonderful inner patio and a very, VERY helpful and efficient staff/reception desk. That´s all good about it.
The AC was so loud I couldn´t sleep at all, the doors don´t fit so you can hear all the corridor´s noises, also you can hear your neighbour room´s noises. The roommaid left a small envelope asking for money, the wifi internet was sooo slow, the pool wasn´t clean enough.
In the foyer furnitures are very nice but dirty, the furniture in the reception is very worn out and not to be in a 5 star.
We got a feeling the price we´ve paid was much too high for what we´ve got.
We liked the best: reception staff
We didn´t like: room
Overall: we won´t stay there again

Merida is more of a romantic city and ‘Gran Real’ was a perfect place for a romantic getaway. The hotel had a great location. Upon arrival, we found the place very quiet, we didn't see many guests around and the check-in was quick and hassle free. Our room was on the 4th floor and had the view of the pool. The pool was a very refreshing sight for a hot day and we dumped our luggage and headed straight to the pool for a refreshing dip. The housekeeping staff was friendly but didn't speak much English.

The drawbacks are that there was no fridge or kettle available in the room and there was no menu for ordering room service. No Wifi access or internet was available in the room and was told there is internet available only in the lounge/restaurant area. We only had a couple of drinks near the pool area but did not visit the restaurant, as it looked mostly empty. We mostly dined at the nearby stalls and cafes. The breakfast spread was poor on the first two days and on the 3rd day, we were just served with eggs and cereals. I guess they did not have enough guests for breakfast spread on that day.
The hotel is perfectly located between El Paseo Montejo and El Centro. Both areas are accessible by walking.

I would recommend this hotel especially for couples looking for a quite time away from it all.

Room Tip: Get the higher floors with a pool view.
