“Will definitely return!”
Reviewed 20 May 2013

After reading so many negative reviews, I'd never think people were talking about the same hotel! My husband and made a quick stop in Merida on our honeymoon,we planned to stay two days, but ended up staying a whole week. The staff was unbelievably helpful and gave us info and directions on how and when to get to all the hot tourist stops. We did not tour w groups, we went everywhere on our own using the rental car the receptionist got us for a really good price! The breakfast and sweet bread was the best we've had at any other hotel! We still rave about them after so long! Our room was super comfortable, clean and the restroom was super clean and not "aged" at all , as other reviews suggest. We took off to another hotel since we decided to stay another day in Merida before taking off to Valladolid, and boy did we REGRET IT!!! Gran Real was by far more inviting, cleam and comfortable. We never would have thought that other hotel would be that terrible after all the great reviews we read on it! I guess it all comes down to we each talk about our own experiences, and dedinitely no two will be the same. But we will definitely book at Gran Real when we return to Merida... so sorry to hear so many people had a bad experience in such a lovely hotel :(

We had travelled from Campeche, and had booked another hotel which was terrible. We put the luggage back in the car and came across the Gran Real. The staff were really helpful and we were made to feel at home, from the first minute. The whole ambiance was just what we needed. The place is relaxed and the colonial feel is wonderful. We ate there in the evening and were very impressed by the local flavour and the lovely waiter. There is a small pool but we didn't have time to try it. The room was clean and very comfortable, breakfast was also a very relaxing affair. We also left our luggage after checking out and again this was absolutely no problem. There is plenty of parking. To add to the surprise this turned out to be the sister hotel of where we had booked for the next day, how wierd. Well worth the money.

Room Tip: We were in the new part it might be nice to stay in the original But we didn't see the rooms

While we were outside the hotel to visit the area, someone came into our room and cracked our luggage and stole some money which was inside... The room was tidy and cleaned up. There was no trace of breaking in... The burglar had the key of the room... No investigation nor apologize from the hotel. UNACCEPTABLE for a ***** starred hotel. What a joke for the stars! We ABSOLUTELY do NOT recommend it!!!

We did a roundtrip through Yucatan a booked this hotel for 2 nights. The Lobby is nice looking in a colonial style. The room was okay for this short stay, but had a very old and small bathroom. There was only mexican TV and slow internet.
The hotel is only a 3 minutes walk from the Plaza where you can listen to folklore music on mondays. The breakfast was not very good, only a few things like toast and eggs. The staff could be much more attentive to refill foods earlier.

Nice location, very close to center of Merida, with parking and helpful personnel. The room was clean and the breakfast was o.k. BUT there was no fridge in the rooms and this is very important especially as when you return to your room after a hot day, you need a cold class of water and you cannot have it. You also need it during the night and you cannot have it unless you will call the room service.
I think that this is the major problem of this hotel.

The courtyard on arrival looks nice but nothing else beyond this was nice in any way at all.
We got a bad vibe from this hotel from the word go and disliked it in every way. Being asked to confirm that yes we definitely did want the double bed we had booked and not 2 singles gave the impression that we were disapproved of. The room we were given felt like it was the nastiest they had available. It was fusty smelling and seemed like it hadn’t been used in ages. We had to put the aircon on full blast for hours to dispel the nasty stale smell. The safe had been left locked and it took some time to get a man sent to open it, who couldn’t do it and wandered off again before eventually returning to open it. This wasted time when we wanted to get out and explore. There was nothing pleasant in the small basic room, the lighting was inadequate to read, but a forbidding sign in the bathroom warns angrily that any non washable marks left on the sheets will lead to an extra charge. How welcoming!

The breakfast was truly hideous. We rise early and were there at 0705, but already 2 huge tour groups were rudely swarming like locusts and devouring everything in sight. Staff couldn’t keep up and just shrugged at our attempts to convey that there were no plates, so we had to grab saucers and attempt to find something to eat. When we grabbed a few bits the quality was very poor. See pictures for the true state of breakfast.

The 5 star sign outside is surely a bad joke. We were very glad to leave after one night and saw a good few hotels which were nearer to the main square and looked rather nicer, so I see no reason to opt to stay here at all.

Room Tip: ours was horrid on ground floor looking in at pool

Nice rooms, not refreshingly lovely but comfortable, neat and clean. Very few English channels on tv and not a single English news channel. Very pretty building with lush quartyards and a great pool area. Decent breakfasts and eager staff. Very good location just a few blocks from the main plaza.
