Sunday was an exciting day of visiting the various market booths and mingling with the locals. Purchased some handmade & embroidered doll clothes for my niece.

The Plaza Grande is surrounded on all sides by beautifully restored historical buildings. The cathedral anchors one side of the plaza and on the others there is the historic home of Don Montejo and the pink palace of city hall and the mint green of the government buildings. The plaza itself has large shady trees for people watching and resting and free wifi. There are stalls of vendors, especially on Sundays while food stands are set up around the edge of the plaza. On Sundays there is musical entertainment set up on a stage in front of City Hall and on Sunday evening you can watch (or join in!) as the locals gather to dance. What a memorable scene: music, dancing and buildings lit up like birthday cakes. Truly wonderful.

We spent a good deal of our weekly visit to Merida hanging out at the Plaza Grande. By day, one could find an assortment of breakfast and lunch options and at night there was entertainment, a huitlacoche meal that is almost impossible to replicate in the U.S. and a large variety of delicious gelatos for dessert. At night, with the cathedral lit up, it is both spectacular and peaceful to sit in the lovely facing chairs.

Surrounded by historical sites, the plaza is a comfortable and informal place to gather and I saw lots of Mexicans relaxing, lovers kissing (first time I see that in 23 years of traveling around the Riviera Maya) and young people surfing on the Net as , YES!,the garden of this plaza has Wi-fi!

The park is full of people strolling or sitting on benches and talking. It gives you a personal feel and sense of community. Mérida's oldest buildings, beautiful in their scale and composition, surround the square. And you will find pigeons everywhere which is very romantic !
