My wife and I are traveling around the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America. We spent the weekend in Merida's Historical Central District area. We needed a hotel that was safe, somewhat modern, inexpensive and fairly well located near the Central District area. El Castellano satisfied everyone of those criteria's. It is approximately 4 or so Mexico blocks from Plaza Grande and all its entertainment. We found and booked it off of Kayak.com. It was moderately priced and offered the feel of a modern hotel. The rooms were clean, great water pressure, our bed was very comfortable, the AC worked well and the WiFi worked as well as any other hotel/resort we have stayed in before. The service was professional and they let us check in almost 3 hours early. Check out was just as easy. If you are a person, couple or family that likes the Carlton Ritz or Hyatt Regency style 5 plus star hotels and/or resorts, then pay the price and stay there. This is not your horty torty place. This high rise hotel is a little older, but is nothing to shy away from. They did turn down our bed and left a light on when we came back from the evening affairs. Its a nice place and works great for the middle aged adults who like comfort at an affordable price. AGAIN, this is not a 5 star hotel, but I/we have stayed in 4 star places that were worst than the El Castellano that cost much more.

Room Tip: It really depends if you are going to be in your room a lot. Our room was on the second floor. The view wasn't that great, but we were not in the room that much. If you like a view, ask for the 5th floor up.

We enjoyed our short stay at this hotel... It's got all that a traveller is looking for. El Castellano is central, comfortable and a good value for money. The room was big and the fact that you get another sink outside the bathroom makes it the more comfortable especially when you're sharing the room with 2 other people. The food was so good that we were sorry that we didn't get to stay for at least another night.

The Catellano was recommended as a great hotel, safe and in the city center, and at an affordable price. That was indeed the case. It is more basic as for example the Hilton (where we got to stay a couple of days more), but nicely kept (a little older), excellent front desk service, wifi, breakfast restaurant, business center...a good option. We would return to this hotel.

Very good location. Our room was spacious with two double beds, table, chairs, and a very large window we could see a big part of the city. The room did not have mini bar but had free wi-fi.
In the bathroom the amenities and the size of the towels could have been better.Very helpful in the reception. In the restaurant the choices for dinner were few but the breakfast included a wide variety of food and desserts.

We spent one night in Merida on an excursion to the ruins at Uxmal through Royal Resorts (they own this hotel) and it was a letdown from the 5 star treatment at the Royal Haciendas in Playa del Carmen. It had the feel of a business hotel, the rooms are average and dated, and could use a good deep clean and or/renovation. They come with in room coffee pots and bottled water, but you are charged for the actual coffee and water so be careful. Our window wouldn't close all of the way unless the air conditioner was on (it pushed on the window and kept it sealed) so we could hear the street noise outside. One of the other travelers in our group couldn't get the lock on their room to latch completely, a little concerning. RR claims this is a 5 star hotel, but they have some work to do to reach that designation! Our breakfast was included and it was really good. The buffet is huge with a lot of variety and well prepared food. Overall, just an OK experience....
