Hotel Colonial
Ranked #24 of 106 Hotels in Merida
Reviewed 14 April 2014

Our stay at the Colonial began when we deposited our bags in the room and went out for a look around. The room seemed acceptable, if not fancy, but when we returned, we found that the a/c until had sprung a leak and run water all over our luggage. The desk clerk spoke almost no English and only looked blank when I told him it needed to be fixed. He finally called someone else who asked if we'd like to be moved to another room. Well, YES, we would. They seemed a bit surprised about that. I was afraid our laptops and camera gear would be ruined but we lucked out on that. It all survived.
The hotel is on the corner of the main street of Merida, and is centrally located, so it's easy to walk to other places. Since driving in Merida can be challenging at best, walking is a good idea. The parking was in a garage across the street. The rooms were clean and of average size with comfortable beds, but I was disappointed to find that a breakfast was NOT included. I was under the impression it was complimentary, and it was not. Some areas of the hotel are quite old. I think the elevator might be in that category. The pool is microscopic and was ice cold. A plus was the water cooler in the hall outside our room. For dinner we were directed to the restaurant across the street, which ended up being extremely busy, crowded, and the dinner was so-so. The next day we found a tiny place down the street and got a terrific meal.
All in all it was interesting and educational for a first trip, but I don't think I'd stay there again. I'm sure there must be other places that are prettier and with more amenities for the price.

Buenas Tardes,

Saludos

We stayed here since our first hotel was fully booked. The price was not expensive but far from the cheapest options in town. We guess the price is for the location, which is very good. The hotel is in an old condition, extremely small bathroom(you can hardly close the door while sitting on the toilet). The pool is in a dark hole and I guess no one feels tempted to use it. We were handed a room on the second floor with a window against the building next door. A generator or Air-con(Big box) were right outside and made A LOT of noise during the night. You don't expect to wear earplugs in a hotel, so this room should be the last they offer to their guests.
The personell hardly raised their eyebrows when you walked thorugh the lobby, even though they were helpfull of booking us a taxi.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room first, and get one on the higher floors.

This was by far the worst room throughout our 3 weeks in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. The only plus points were the location (two blocks from the Zocalo/main square), the buffet breakfast and the roof top terrace. The room (on second floor) opened into an internal corridor so there was no natural light, the window (which did not lock) overlooked the corridor so the choice was have the curtains open and be seen by everyone walking past or closing the curtains and have the light on day and night. The room was so small that the gap between the bed and the wall with the door to the bathroom was just 6 ins (I measured it!) meaning we had to shuffle sideways to get to the bathroom. The a/c was either off (too hot and stuffy) or on (too cold and noisy) there was no temperature control. The bathroom had no window and needed a complete revamp - there were broken tiles, missing tiles and a cracked basin with no plug. How the hotel can claim 4 stars is beyond me, the rooms were more like a back street 1 star hostel!

Room Tip: Don't stay hereM

Saludos

We based ourselves at the Hotel Colonial for 3 nights while visiting the surrounding sights. The hotel was in a good location for venturing out at night (close to Plaza Grande) and reasonably priced. Or room was ok.. it was clean and with the balcony door closed it was quiet enough. We didn't eat at hotel so can't comment but hot and cold bottled water available on tap was a bonus. Nice rooftop terrace. Small clean pool area on ground floor.

Been to Merida numerous times, visits ranging from a few days to few weeks. I always stay at the Colonial. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, from the Manager to the Bell hop, is friendly, and will go out of their way to get you what ever you need to make your stay perfect. The restaurant is good and inexpensive, while location is close to the main park, zocalo. Not a resort or Luxury hotel, but I get treated better there than i do at the major Hotel chains in the states. The service and experience are better than other hotels your would pay much more for.

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice.

We recently stayed in Merida with two other couples who had been there before. They had also stayed at the Hotel Colonial before so we had impressions of what it might be like. My husband and I were both very happy with our stay at the Hotel Colonial. We cannot begin to express how impressed we were with the hotel staff, their restaurant, and especially with the atmosphere. Our room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Our maid did a great job of cleaning our room everyday. We were on the fourth floor and had the outside balcony just outside our door that we used every morning and evening to just relax and enjoy the scenery. The view is quite spectacular except for the remodeling going on next door. But even with that was an event to experience. The restaurant had a variety of food to offer each day. The fruit was plentiful and the Flan there is so great! They have a chef who will prepare your eggs your way and additional dishes to satisfy your hungers. The hotel staff is just great. We felt like we were just part of the family. The Hotel Colonial is perfectly situated so you are close to quite a bit of the city. Walking in the city we felt safe and the experience is one we will remember for years to come. Thank you to Jorge and all his staff for a wonderful visit. We can't wait to come back and make Hotel Colonial our home away from home.

Room Tip: The fourth floor has quick access to the balcony and great views.

This hotel is quite close to the main square, only a few blocks walk. There is a nice looking pool, free filtered water for refilling your jug in the room, and the rooms are clean and quite nice except for a little bit of water damage and paint lifting in the bathroom. The beds were reasonably comfortable and the staff on the front desk were helpful with info on Merida. I recommend the buffet breakfast which was pretty good value for about $7 AUD. People come specifically from other hotels for the buffet breakfast. Overall I would recommend this hotel and I would stay here again.

Room Tip: There is no lift so if you have heavy bags ask for the lower levels.
