Hotel Casa del Balam
Ranked #14 of 106 Hotels in Merida
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 January 2013

We stayed in the Casa del Balam Hotel for two nights at New year's. The location is good since it's in central Merida; the breakfast was good; the lobby with its courtyard and small fountain is very nice; the antique elevators are interesting; and the small pool OK but only had sun in the morning.

The critical downside for us was our assigned room (Room 502). It had an annoying intense musty smell suggestive of mold in the room's air conditioner system. Unfortunately the room's window had been sealed shut so there was no way to combat the smell. We asked for another room but were told that the hotel was full.

In conclusion, I'd be very weary of staying at the Casa del Balam Hotel again unless I was guaranteed a room with a window that opened.

Room Tip: Get a room with a window that opens and avoid room 502.

First the only negative thing I can say and that is the walls are pretty thin so sound does come through pretty easily.

Other than that the place is fantastic. Love the open courtyard in the middle of the hotel it is also perfectly situated to tour the historic part of the city.

Beds were comfortable but the bathrooms were a bit wonky due to how the shower was setup got a bit of water on the floor but it was never a major issue.

Like I said in my title the breakfast and wait staff are top notch. I highly recommend the Mayan Omelet which was a delicious.

Room Tip: Go for the 6th floor since the view on the balcony is the best up there.

Let me start by saying that we went to Merida for a long weekend in December 2012 to attend a Wedding´s friend. She recommended this hotel and we decided to give it a try. Stayed there for 3 nights, check in process was very quick, the guy at the front desk was friendly and the bellboy took our staff to our room right away.

Breakfast was great, eggs, fruit, bread, juice and coffee, the y do have several choices which I think work great for 3 or 4 days at the most. Again Service was great, each and every server was friendly and always willing to help.

Room was rustic as you can imagine being in downtown Merida, clean, and comfortable, bed was a litthe hard for me but after long days of walking, sightseeing, drinking, etc you can sleep mostly anywhere. It was a bit noisy since it is downtown and there is traffic around also becuase it is only 1 block away from where at nights the street is close and restaurants set up their tables right on the street with live bands playing until 200AM. Again after long days I personally had no issues sleeping.

Overall it is a great place to stay, very well located (You can walk to the main square and get there in 5 minutes and visit several museums and stuff all around without spending money at all. The only reason I gave it "very good" and not Excellent is because I heard that somebody got stolen some jewlery from their room. Which of course is not nice, I know it happens in a lot of places and that is why we must be preventive and put our valuable things in the safe.

Hope this review helps and if any questions please feel free to contact me. Enjoy Mérdia!

Room Tip: For what I saw all of the rooms have a window to the street so I dont really have a tip

I am currently staying at this hotel for 2 nights (Dec 12) in a standard non smoking room.
The room is furnished with 2 double beds and there is plenty of space for luggage etc.. The bathroom is also spacious with a combo tub/shower and amenities by Lavarino Cosso.
The furnishings are a bit dated, at least in the room that I am staying in.

First the pros:
- location is excellent, in a lovely location near Centro, the cathedral etc.., very convenient for older and less mobile travellers.
- staff are extremely friendly and a large number speaks very good English, a rarity in Mexico as I've experienced so far
- The attached restaurant has good food for a reasonable price. My American breakfast was included and was reasonable, althouugh the selection was not extensive.
- TV has numerous channels to chose from, although the majority was in Spanish.
- The hotel itself is a lovely former hacienda. There is an inner courtyard that is beautiful, although being a former hacienda the furnishings are distinctly "olde-style" and the lifts (there were 2) are old as well.
- Wireless internet is free and reasonably fast. I had no problems with access from my room.

Pros:
- there is no safe deposit box in the room. I understand that reception does provide safe deposit facilities.
- There is no iron or ironing board supplied.
- the powerpoints in the room are in a very inconvenient location, makes it awkward to recharge your electronics
- Only 2 bottles of water (600ml each) are provided gratis, everything else costs $.
On check in I did inform mmgt that I will not be using the mini bar and thus they locked it, which is inconvenient for keeping anything else that you buy cool.
There is a small mini mart close to the hotel, on the same street as the hotel Calle 60 which you can buy snacks, water etc..
- The air-con is incredibly noisy: makes sleeping hard for light sleepers
- There is not alot of light in the room, I had to turn on every single light in order to use my computer.
- There is no views to speak of, my windows faced a derelict house and the front door faces the rooftops of surroundings houses, quite ugly really.

In summary this hotel is charming with a convenient locations to attractions in Centro, with very friendly English speaking staff. Be warned however that the furniture is dated and creature comforts may not be what one is used to in other 5 star hotels.

Room Tip: The higher are slightly better, less noise

Casa del Balam is a beautiful hotel in the center of Merida! The rooms are lovely, the bathrooms filled with all the amenities that make foreign travelers feel comfortable, and the reception areas on the entry level are stunning. The staff is friendly and helpful, too. Our group stayed at the hotel at the beginning and end of a trip elsewhere in the Yucatan and we found the entire experience at Casa del Balam to be refreshing and relaxing. My only recommendation would be to have towels by the swimming pool.

Casa del Balam is an old world charm, tastefully decorated in the rustic colonial style. Staff are quite helpful and accommodating. It is centrally located and all main venues are within walking distance. Would not hesitate to go back and recommend this place strongly. Has a nice relaxing lobby area and I liked the central small but pretty courtyard concept

Room Tip: Rooms not facing Calle 60 are quieter

This hotel was in a super convenient location to the main square and Av. Paseo Montejo. The pool, bar and courtyard areas are beautiful and tranquil. The rooms are very nice too. My only complaint is that the mattresses were too hard. We asked about a softer bed in another room and they didn't have any.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Casa del Balam is one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's also one of the few original Mexican Art Deco houses left in the city. The hotel was built in 1970 incorporating facets of the original home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Tourism in Mexico. His daughter, Ms. Carmen Barbachano Gomez Rul (who was also involved on the family business), left the original facade and selected the name of "Casa del Balam" (Mayan words for "house of the jaguar") to honor his father nickname "balam" due to his visionary sharp business mind. Ms. Barbachano was very devoted of the colonial period and decorated the house accordingly. Big wooden furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were part of her fine selection. She had envisioned a place where every touch could softly spoke of the serene ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made instead of just mere clients. When looking at the amazing interior of this Casona and experiencing the warm specialized service of its personnel, one can easily understand that Ms. Barbachano did accomplish her desire of uniqueness, and in a very exquisite way! ... more   less
