“in the heart of Merida”
Reviewed 17 August 2012

The hotel is a bit tricky to find as it lacks any big signs. Once arrived you cross the first of 2 courtyards to the reception. The 2nd courtyard features a small pool (didn't use it) and the rooms. Styed in room #2. Spacious room, no huge luxury but all you need. Very clean and well maintained. large shower, rest of the bathroom rather small. Hotel is a former Mission building so you find plenty religious ornaments. Hotel features free valet parking as it has no own lot. It's located right in the heart of old town Merida a block away from the central square. Make sure you visit on a Sunday wher the centre is closed for motor traffic and there is a big market on the central square with lots to see and do and to eat! There is all sorts of music around the square. locals seem very friendly and you won't feel a bit unsafe. Merida is good for visiting Uxmal ( 1hour drive) and other Mayan ruins where the main tourist busses don't always go. We did not use the restaurant as there are a number of restaurants around, some are a bit touristy. Breakfast was good, choice of eggs, bread, jam, juice and fruits. Great value for money and very charming hotel in a great city.

A comfortable hotel located 200 m from the centro. Reminiscent of an old home turned into a boutique hotel, this place is filled with character and old world charm. The a la carte was truly a surprise as it surely must rate as one of the best I have had in Mexico thus far.the proximity of the hotel to the centro also allows you to experience the markets and activities. Be sure not to miss the festival with the markets, food band and the dancing on Sunday evenings.

This beautiful little hotel is "off the beaten track" in that it is down a one-way street and adjacent to some not so nice buildings (don't worry, Merida is safe and the hotel is close to everything in the Centro). Nonetheless, once you enter the front door, you are greeting with a garden, fountain, beautiful greenery and a trip back into time. Go a little farther and check out the inviting pool (it was HOT when we were there) and take time to enjoy the restaurant (one word of caution: When we were there, alcohoic beverages were pretty pricey).
Our room was beautiful, with a king size bed, sitting area, marble floors and a first class en suite bath. It was also neat, clean and cool.
The staff was most friendly and accomodating.
If/when we return to Merida, we will certainly do our best to return to La Mision de Fray Diego.

This was a lovely little boutique hotel with a real homely feel to it. The staff were lovely, and always gave recommendations that were spot on (ie restaurants, etc).

Location was good, we felt very safe and central. I would highly recommend to anyone travelling to Merida for its value and comfort.

What a lovely entrance as we stepped into this old Friars compound. many hotel sin the Yucatan have wonderful courtyards with fountains and heaps of huge palms, flowering creepers, and terra cotta potted palnts. Your key was a huge crucufix. My room was large and opened onto the small sparkling pool. The walls were covered in creeping vegitation and flowers. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast were served in the courtyard and quite nice. We dined one evening and had a lovely dinner in the candle lit courtyard.
Very close to the main square in old Merida, an easy walk to many of the towns sites.

Room Tip: ask for a room by the pool

We stayed for 3 nights and were very comfortable and cool. We arrived at midnight (as planned)and were checked in and shown our room very efficiently. The beds were comfortable, all was very clean and amenities good. The character of La Mision has been beautifully preserved and the artifacts are lovely throughout. The staff were pleasant and helpful and it is only a 5 minute stroll to the plaza and sights.Breakfasts are good value, dinners very average but such a lovely setting.

In January we spent only 1 night in the hotel, which is a good thing.

For a short visit or stopover in the city for a night – location is very good. It is just few minutes walk directly from lovely main city square.

Hotel has beautiful, picturesque and well maintained courtyard, as other reviewers already described, nothing to add on that. This definitely gives a great impression upon entrance from the street.

However, our room, at the ground floor right near the pool was quite awful, nothing of the rooms I see on pictures from other reviewers. It was room No 6 if I remember well, so avoid it in any way you can.

First, in the room was terrible smell of mould, I suppose it’s because of pool proximity. I wouldn’t complain if that would have been the only drawback. Same smell, just more intensive, and black traces of mould was in the bathroom. Shower was worst, mould and scale all around.

Room decoration would be nice (interesting wooden furniture in old domestic style) if it would have been maintained, but feeling of falling apart and dirt was all around. Bed covers were white and with several obvious dirt spots!!! Towels in the bathroom were also very poor and smelly. TV is hidden in wooden cabinet, I put on the side that it’s ancient TV set with dirty remote controller, but signal is very bad and it’s hard to watch anything. It was not important to us, as we just wanted to watch basic news and found that on the internet. Wireless internet was working and that was OK.

We couldn’t find more than one socket in the room (for that one we unplugged bed side lamp) to re-charge mobile phones and laptop.

Breakfast in the morning was OK (they serve it upon your order of available standard stuff, not buffet style), with huge minus that they do not have espresso coffee (not even as option to be paid).

Despite really lovely impression upon entrance – I wouldn’t choose this hotel again and thus wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. But again, it was just our room, I get impression that other rooms are much better than what we've got. So if you have to go there, avoid ground floor rooms on the pool side.

Room Tip: Avoid room No. 6, possibly all other rooms on the groundfloor near the pool.
