“Very quaint hotel in a convenient location”
Reviewed 9 July 2013

This hotel is charming....if you like luxury you will not be happy. If you like a more rustic authentic Mexican experience, you will love it. The location is 2 blocks from the main central square. Paseo de Montejo is a cheap $2 or $3 US cab ride away. I booked online at hotels.com as I arrived last minute, and the hotel directly wanted to charge $150 US/night for a room and I was able to get the rate of $60 US/night and they upgraded us to a king room upon our arrival for free. The room is spacious, very clean and well appointed. The beds are hard (typical for Mexico) and the mosquitos are pretty bad in the courtyard which is really out of their control. I was disappointed that the internet only works in the lobby when they advertise it works in the rooms as well. The hot water took about 15 minutes to work, and sometimes the cold water ran hot, but no biggie there. Our biggest complaint was one evening we went out on the town, and when we returned at 2am, we were locked out. The hotel pays for 24 hour "security" and the man was sleeping on the job. After 15 minutes of knocking very loudly and shouting, a hotel guest eventually woke up and they found the security guard to come let us in. We complained to the front desk the following morning, and they assured us they would address the situation. I value 24 hour security, so we were disappointed to find that the following night when we arrived back to the hotel late again at 1am the gates were wide open and what appeared to be a homeless woman was sitting inside the courtyard with her new born baby laid out on a bench, which was just a few steps from our front door. Not the compromise we were looking for. Maybe a happy medium of just hiring a security guard that doesn't sleep on the job would have been a better solution. Restaurant staff was great and the food was decent. All in all, the hotel at $60/nt was a good value. I would stay somewhere else for any amount more.

We spent 4 nights here and found the staff to be extremely helpful. It was bliss to come back after a long day touring and have a swim and relax at the little bar where Jose would make great margaritas. The food too was of excellent quality and we found that we couldn't be bothered to walk the five minutes into town to other restaurants when we could get great meals here - the paella especially was worth the wait!

As this is a 15th century building the rooms vary but are comfortable and the staff are always willing to please with extra towels, adaptors, etc. Yes the beds are hard but that seems to be the case in most hotels in Mexico! The whole place has a feeling of tranquility. Wifi is available in the rooms automatically but you have to use a different password outside.

If you are in town on a Sunday it is definitely worth going into town to see the Fiesta where everyone comes in to dance in the square.

Room Tip: rooms near the pool are larger

There were 3 different options on line when choosing rooms.Basic ,Upper level(which I have chosen) and a "Suite"! To My surprise,The Upper Level Room that I got Was the first one next to the street, and we all know how horrible the traffic in the downtown Merida is.Not only That,it Was the first one next to the Hotel restaurant, where You have constant noise.
The room has absolutely not a Single Window, just a small Screen on the Door that can be opened, but since this room is located next to the restaurant, that really does not work.
At 1am in the morning my husband and I were woken up by a noise, from, I would Guess Hotel workers, taking some pool things up and down.
Not to mention, that there are stains on the bathroom doors from i would Guess since the Hotel was opened and ABSOLUTELY not a Drop of Hot Water. So much for the 85usd Hotel.
Not worth the price AT ALL!

Room Tip: i guess the rooms by the pool are better, which I thought I would get since I paid more and have chos...

I would echo the previous comments about this charming hotel and add that the staff are pleasant and very eager to make your visit a good one.

We enjoyed dinner in the little quiet courtyard twice and the food was fresh and delicious.

The rooms are clean and quiet however the one comment I would make is that at least in Room #2 the bed was rock hard.

This is a special place and well located to all the city has to offer.

This is our favorite romantic restaurant in Merida. It's like finding a secret Spanish courtyard--we happened to see the menu outside the entrance while wandering the streets. The decor is beautiful and historic--wrought-iron gates, stone columns under tremendous arches, with a tiered fountain trickling in the center of the courtyard. We've eaten here during our last 3 visits, and the fish has always been fresh and really tender. The waiter/bartender makes a mean margarita, strong and refreshing. It's a quiet place to enjoy a relaxing evening. We make it a point to come here the last night of every trip--we love the great ambiance, food, and service.

I spent a total of six nights at this charming, atmospheric hotel in the heart of Merida. The stunning colonial architecture, lovely courtyard, and excellent restaurant made this a great introduction to an historic city. I was fortunate to stay when prices were discounted, so it was affordable as well.

The 'special' rooms are off the front courtyard in the oldest section of the hotel, adjacent to reception and the diningroom. They have wonderful thick walls, colonial-style furnishings, complimentary bottled water, good air conditioning and ceiling fan, and a small room safe for valuables. There is a larger section of rooms surrounding the plunge pool in the back section of the hotel. I suspect these rooms might be a bit quieter, but the bit of noise to the front rooms was just due to normal hotel operations and was nothing objectionable.

The hotel announces itself as adult-oriented and there were no young children there during my stay. There were, however, a tour group or two which dramatically changed the atmosphere during meals, when the small restaurant filled up and independent guests were asked to sit inside while patio tables were reserved for the groups. There were plenty of other fine dining choices witihin easy walking distance, however, so no need to depend on the restaurant if it did not suit. My meals there were excellent and the menu offers a nice mix of various Mexican cuisines.

Staff were exceptional: friendly, helpful, engaging, and professional. This is a very well run hotel.

This was our first visit to Merida and I searched quite awhile to find budget accommodations with good reviews that was in a historic building. So imagine our shock to arrive and be told we were being sent to another hotel because the A/C was not working. This was during the height of "Carnaval" and we saw other patrons come in off the street as we were being ushered to the other hotel (which happened to be a time share) and assumed they overbooked due to the festival and we would never set foot inside. Alas, we were very pleasantly surprised to go back the next day and be told our room was, indeed, ready for us. Whew!! We had a room with 2 double beds (more large singles than true doubles) on the 2nd floor overlooking the lovely pool.

PROS

Location, location, location! So close to the square and other areas.

Peace and quiet

Clean

Good food. We only had breakfast there, but it was really good (except for the coffee which was really weak)

Nice, helpful staff.

Cool, refreshing pool WITH towels waiting for you on the chaises.

Great price

CONS

Beds were not super comfy for sleeping

Weak coffee

Pros far outweighed any negatives and our first experience in Merida was great!! We will definitely come back when it is NOT Carnaval to experience the true Merida without all the chaos of daily parades and bleachers and barriers set up everywhere

BEST TIP: EVERY TUESDAY AT THE ENGLISH LIBRARY THEY HAVE HOUSE TOURS. THERE IS NO CHARGE AND YOU GET TO SEE 4 VARIOUS HOMES IN MERIDA WHICH IS SUCH A BONUS!!!
