This hotel is charming....if you like luxury you will not be happy. If you like a more rustic authentic Mexican experience, you will love it. The location is 2 blocks from the main central square. Paseo de Montejo is a cheap $2 or $3 US cab ride away. I booked online at hotels.com as I arrived last minute, and the hotel directly wanted to charge $150 US/night for a room and I was able to get the rate of $60 US/night and they upgraded us to a king room upon our arrival for free. The room is spacious, very clean and well appointed. The beds are hard (typical for Mexico) and the mosquitos are pretty bad in the courtyard which is really out of their control. I was disappointed that the internet only works in the lobby when they advertise it works in the rooms as well. The hot water took about 15 minutes to work, and sometimes the cold water ran hot, but no biggie there. Our biggest complaint was one evening we went out on the town, and when we returned at 2am, we were locked out. The hotel pays for 24 hour "security" and the man was sleeping on the job. After 15 minutes of knocking very loudly and shouting, a hotel guest eventually woke up and they found the security guard to come let us in. We complained to the front desk the following morning, and they assured us they would address the situation. I value 24 hour security, so we were disappointed to find that the following night when we arrived back to the hotel late again at 1am the gates were wide open and what appeared to be a homeless woman was sitting inside the courtyard with her new born baby laid out on a bench, which was just a few steps from our front door. Not the compromise we were looking for. Maybe a happy medium of just hiring a security guard that doesn't sleep on the job would have been a better solution. Restaurant staff was great and the food was decent. All in all, the hotel at $60/nt was a good value. I would stay somewhere else for any amount more.
