We arrived in Merida late in the evening on a very wet January night. We walked into La Mision de Fray Diego through its centuries-old wooden doors and into a candlelit courtyard and a welcoming smile from our host. This is a wonderful hotel. A calm, serene oasis in the centre of bustling Merida. I can recommend the breakfast (especially the huevos rancheros) and the perfect margaritas made by Jose. When we arrived home we realised we'd left a jacket, with one of my fave brooch's on its lapel, in the wardrobe. The hotel staff were fantastic - it was no problem for them to send it back to us in NZ.
If you like shiny, flash and modern, this hotel is not for you. It is a 16th century relic full of antiques, art and atmosphere but with nice bathrooms and a crystal-clear central pool. We loved it.More
