“Hats off to Merida for this zoo.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 May 2014

We spent hours here. The whole zoo is so well done you wonder how it can be free. The variety of animals is also impressive. Rather large hippos and an assortment of cheeky primates were some favorites. There were many lions and quite a few tigers. They have quite the collection. It really was a pleasant way to spend the day.

“A wonderful old zoo boasting free admission and located in the heart of historic Mérida”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2014 via mobile

Kids young and old will enjoy this historic zoo with an impressive selection of animals. It features an award winning breeding program for large cats and only animals suitable for the climate in Mérida. There are rides for the kids including a train, chairlift, and boats. Admission is totally free and the foods, including hot dogs, cotton candy, and freshly made ice creams, are tasty and cheap. It is a shaded adventure that makes for a needed escape on a hot Mérida day.

“Great with kids”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

Great with kids. The zoo is free and stocked with animals. Yes, the cages seem a bit small by current zoo standards, but the animals appear happy and well looked after. Loads of big cats (Tigers/Lions/Jaguars/Leopards). Cheap fun family orientated train through the zoo.

The zoo is located in moderate sized park full of child orientated activites; bouncy castles, rides, a large playground (with a real airplane to climb on and slide out of!). Lots of snack/drink stands.

There is also a large grocery store around the corner on Calle 59.

The zoo is a quick taxi ride from the Gran Plaza for a couple of dollars. Good afternoon/evening entertainment for the kids. The zoo closes at 5:00 pm.

“Really relaxing place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2013

While I think that Zoos that aren't in the animals best interest should be banned, from a selfish point of view I had a great time at Merida zoo. Its free and there were so many happy children there. While the enclosures were not largest in most cases the animals were paired for company. There is a wide range of animals though at times I wonder who's entertaining who. There are loads of activities for children, face painting, go karts, a train rides, music and of course loads of other happy children.
