“A haven of peace & quiet in a city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 December 2013

We stayed at Las Arecas for a week at the beginning of December 2013. We found the accommodation to be very spacious with a separate sitting room with a fridge, sink, table & chairs. The real plus point for us was the peace & tranquility that existed once we'd entered the front door from the busy city centre.
An excellent place to stay & very highly recommended.
Probably best to email the owners beforehand to let them know you're coming.

I am a solo female traveler and felt very safe and secure here. Lovely, clean, spacious room. Excellent value for the money in Merida. Close to the main plaza. Felt safe walking in the area at night. Enjoyed the dog and cat and conversations with Raul who speaks English perfectly and is a wealth of information about Merida. Would stay again without a doubt.

Having read the reviews we decided that this was where we wanted to stay for our 5 nights in Merida. We booked in October for our trip in January to be sure of getting a room and our booking was confirmed. I emailed a few days before we arrived but was told that the guesthouse was full so they had booked us in somewhere else. I can't tell you how disappointed we were and angry too that they hadn't had the decency to honour our booking or to give us notice of their cancellation.
We knocked on their door a couple of times during our stay to request an explanation but there didn't seem to be anyone around.....
So beware booking ahead, it means nothing.

I had been seeing the reviews of many people, and I decided to give a visit to Las Arecas. Las Arecas is a family guest house, located in the heart of Merida, close to many parks, El Centro with all its shopping and excellent typical food! You are walking distance to everything, from little convenient stores to house exchanges, to museums and and tons of site seeing. I took the room called Taan-Kab, which is the room to the back of the house past the kitchen, if you want peace and tranquility, this is it, there is absolutely no noise, it's a great size room for a solo traveler as myself or a couple. Has perfect WI-FI, nice size bathroom, very comfortable full size bed, and a little kitchenet with its own mini fridge which has come extremely convenient in keeping my bottled water for the heat and humidity that is a constant here in Merida. Mauro is an excellent host and Raul as well, I have enjoyed sitting down with them remembering old times here in Merida, and they are great conversationalist, I'm working on my second week stay here and loving it, looking in to making it possibly 3 weeks. If you ever need a place to call home while your traveling in Merida, don't spend the big bucks in luxury hotels or hotels in general when you're going to be out and about, stay here with Mauro at Las Arecas for a great value!

Room Tip: All rooms seem to have AC, the back room (Taan-Kab) is a stand alone little house, private and very...

We stayed at Las Arecas for about a week and found the rooms to be very spacious, clean and comfortable. Our room sat behind the main courtyard and felt private and quiet as there was little to no noise from other guests or the street outside. The room almost felt like we were returning to our own little apartment each night. The hotel was conveniently located within walking distance of everywhere we wanted to go, from the markets to the main plaza to restaurants and museums. Mauro was a very friendly host and didn't hesitate to help with anything we needed without every being intrusive. He even kept our luggage while we spent a night outside of Merida. Wifi was fast and reliable. Plenty of purified water provided. A real bargain. We will definitely return!

Once again, we stayed with Mauro and Raul at Las Arecas in the heart of Merida, just steps from Parque Santiago and Parque Santa Lucia--where the shopping was terrific! Be sure to check out Coqui Coqui and the Chocolate Store (Mayan name begins with an "X"). The old casona is undergoing some rennovations, new paint and other upgrades. None of the work interrupted our stay as we came and went during our three days in Merida. The upstairs accomodation was actually two rooms, with ensuite bathroom--huge windows, A/C and fans, tall ceilings and tile floors--all for 400 pesos per night--a really good value. As friends who travel together we're always looking for the bigger rooms with good beds--and we found all we needed at Las Arecas.Tip: When you arrive, be sure to ring the bell on the left hand side of the door! When you leave, be sure to take the taxi you/they called--not hail another from the street or the owner will have to pay for the cab you didn't wait for!

Room Tip: The upstairs room over the kitchen is the bomb!

I stayed at Las Arecas recently for 6 weeks and can highly recommend it. It is generally quiet and very close to the historical city center. Mauro and Raul are great hosts and willing to help with any problems (medical, dental, massage references, etc.) Raul speaks good English. The entire place is clean and organized. All of the rooms are large! There is a resident cat and dog. I had no problem using Paypal to make a reservation deposit. This place is secure and safe. Wi Fi is fast , secure, and reliable. I hope to return here. Barbara J.. Florida

Room Tip: One room doesn't have AC and it can get stiffling hot here. One room is on the darker side. An...
