The Puuc Route or Ruta Puuc is an interesting and obligatory trip when visiting the Yucatan. It's 80km south of Merida and very do-able day trip. On this route there are Mayan sites (Uxmal, Kahbah, Sayil, X-Lapak, Labna), the caves of Loltun, haciendas,(yaxcopoil museum Ochil restaurant/museum and cenotes.
We did this route ourselves in our own car rental. Just two of us. It's so easy to get to. I highly recommend that you start the route at Grotus Lol-Tun (caves) then work your way back to Uxmal. Since Uxmal is the main attraction along this route you'll want to see that last so you have a gradual build of your viewings. This way thru each stop you're building up to the grand finale.
The caves of Loltun are an epic start! You must use a guide to enter and the tour is about 1 hour. Then it's about 25 minutes to your next stop. After that, each attraction is about ten to 15 minutes apart.
Remember that Uxmal closes at 5pm so you'll need to time your trip accordingly. Uxmal will demand a minimum of 2 hours. I'd stay 3 personally.
If you're loosing time then the must sees along the Puuc Route are Grotus Lol-Tun, Kabah and Uxmal. The others are nice but smaller sites. You wouldn't freak out if you missed those but if you have time then go!
The Puuc Route or Ruta Puuc is an easy and safe drive. It is down some rural roads at times but they're well traveled because it is a tourist route. It really gave us a great experience doing it on our own. It was like an episode of Amazing Race trying to make sure we timed are stops and departures accurately so we'd have the extended time needed for Uxmal..
I loved this day. A true adventure!!
Just make sure you have a full tank of gas and that people in your group are punctual. Timing is everything on this day.
I don't remember seeing a gas station along the route.
