Owner description: Merida's City Museum is located in the renovated Correo (Post Office) building, just next to the city mercado. On the first floor are exhibits about the many-faceted history of the city of Merida, from its birth as the Mayan city of T'ho, to the Spanish conquest by Francisco Montejo, the henequen boom of the early 20th century and current renaissance as the center of culture and commerce of the Yucatan Peninsula.

“Curated with intelligence”

Not the first place I would run to, but I nice place to visit, especially if you want to duck out of the busy streets near the markets. They museum is fairly bare-bones, but curated with intelligence and care. When we were there, an exhibit highlighted the work of contemporary architect Salvador Reyes Rios and his wife, designer Josefina Larrain Lagos. The exhibit was sophisticated and well executed.

“Interesting small museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2012

We had the impression that the museum had recently re-located and not all of the areas for exhibits were fully completed. It gave a good insight into the way in which Merida developed through trade, immigration etc and had some nice exhibition pieces. There were dual language information panels for some of the larger exhibits but more would be welcome. Very enjoyable, if a little low-key - perhaps more photos of the City as it had developed would be a good idea.
The art work upstairs was interesting - especially the Architecture exhibition and there was a lift!
Toilets were exceptional.

“Start your visit to Merida here”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2012

If you haven't done your homework about the history of Merida before your trip, make this museum one of your first stops after arriving and getting your bearings. Just a short stroll from the Plaza through busy streets, this free museum gives you a basic history of Merida and its connection to the henequen trade which financed many of the city's lovely buildings. Since it was Carnival, there were even pictures from early carnivals which were interesting to see. Time permitting, don't miss the huge market just beside the museum. It is huge, hectic, fascinating, crowded, has good prices and is a lot of fun. There was even a live band and a belly dancer on one of my visits!

“Nice City Museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2011

This is located in a very busy marketplace. We were here the 23rd of December and the marketplace was packed. The museum was nice, but most of the explanations of the displays were Spanish. Good place to learn more about this old City.
