“A great value for a boutique hotel.”
Reviewed 16 April 2011

We booked our trip via Jetsetter. We've been to Playa before & stayed @ the Banyan Tree Mayakoba. Obviously it's not the BT, but we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless.

It's a great value for a charming boutique hotel that's quiet, relaxing and romantic. The food was great & reasonably priced. The staff was very kind.

If you're into tacky large resorts, bad all inclusive food, annoying guest....this place is NOT for you.

We stayed there 5 days: clean rooms, perfect hotel size, quiet and peaceful.
The staff is very Friendly and excellent (thanks Ivan, Emilia and Jesus!).

The hotel is 15mins away from Playa del Carmen, perfect for a day escape to Cozumel and do some scuba diving.

We booked this hotel via its website and chose the sunday arrival special promotion, which included a free wednesday night stay as well as receiving 80 dollars/day resort credit for food and beverage, on top of daily complimentary breakfast. 6 day stay for bout 1100 dollars including taxes and fees.
Arrived at the resort via a side road off the highway, and yes, the dirt road is still filled with huge potholes but nothing any ordinary car can't handle. Check in was effortless and we were given a quick tour of the hotel by the very friendly concierge. Rooms were good sized, clean and included your own grassy yard, outdoor tub and literally a couple feet away from the beach. The pool, poolside bar and spa area were tastefully designed and the beach was beautiful with nice huts, a hammock and free snorkels and water shoes available for use. The beach around the hotel though is rocky and isn't particularly suited for swimming unless you walk a short distance upwards.
Hotel staff overall were courteous and helpful. Ismael made great cocktails and you have to ask for the coffee flambe (quite an experience). Food at the hotel's restaurant Naay was overall pretty superb. Daily homemade breads and yogurt with honey as well as the chef's own special habanero sauce is to die for. There is a daily turndown service as well which includes a different small desert treat waiting for you every night.
Things which could be improved on would be the gym. The weight machine is essentially a piece of junk that doesn't work, and the area itself is pretty small and cramped, but I guess people don't go to resorts to work out till their nuts explode.
Overall, great value for money, considering we payed less then 1100 for 5 night stay, and pretty much took care of food and beverage for the entire trip. Also a nice little secluded piece of paradise away from the typical young, noisy and annoying spring breakers. Will return again.

Looking for a quietly elegant boutique hotel in Playa Del Carmen as an alternative to the all-inclusive mega resorts that abound in Riviera Maya? The type of place where everything you need is taken care of before you think of it, making for a completely blissful break from reality? That's what we hoped for, but unfortunately Le Reve is not this kind of a place.

My fiance and I traveled here to location scout for our wedding. Unfortunately we were so turned off by the service we recieved that we did not even end up inquiring about packages.

The decent (not great)? Check in and check out were quick and easy, shuttle service was provided from the airport for the same price as a taxi (more on this later), the room was sparsely furnished but had a very comfortable bed, and the breakfast included was delicious. Jesus, one of the concierge staff, was extremely kind and always ready with a smile.

The bad? The hotel is located on the beach, down a dirt road rife with potholes that made for a fairly uncomfortable ride in and out of town. The view is beautiful but the water is not swimmable due to rocks - you must walk about 15 min down the beach.

The ugly? Service on many occasions was so bad that it basically prevented us from enjoying our "relaxing, romantic" vacation. My fiance and I travel often and typically stay in 4 and 5 star hotels but have also stayed in many inns, guesthouses and B&B's. We do not expect quick service, especially in the Caribbean/Mexico, but we do expect to be made to feel at ease and that our requests are met with an unobliging friendliness. Here are just a few of the issues we experienced in our 4 day stay:

FRONT DESK - not frequently attended. We had to wait 15-30 minutes on two occasions when we really needed service - one, when we arrived back after dinner to realize the maid had locked us out of the bathroom and two, when we arrived home after dinner another night to find a 6 inch long gecko in our room. While seemingly both accidents, it was unacceptable that we were unable to find a staff member to assist us - it was approximately 10 PM both nights.

DINING - napkins had to be requested at every meal. This didn't bother us as much at breakfast but at dinner we asked five times - and NEVER recieved them. We were also served the wrong entrees, and recieved only a sheepish apology in return - after our food, which had been sitting on another table for several minutes, had already gone cold. There is an adorable bar (supposedly open till 11 PM) next to the pool that was rarely attended. There was waiter service on the beach, but the waiter came around every several hours and took 30 minutes to bring two beers. Neither the waiters nor the bartender were friendly even when we attempted to converse in small talk in Spanish.

HOUSEKEEPING - did a decent job cleaning the room, but otherwise was not acceptable. Our first day we requested a cover for one of our beach chairs (every other chair had one). After asking nicely both in English and Spanish, we never recieved one. Towels were dispensed several hours after we laid down - again, we had to ask several times.

SPA - The most upsetting service snafu was with our massage appointments, which were confirmed twice (via email prior to arrival and upon check-in), made for 3 PM on our first day. When I inquired where we should meet our therapists, I was told our appointments had vanished and that they were booked up for the rest of the day. When I protested this, they made a call and said we could have them immediately (at noon, when we had just arrived on the beach). My fiance then went to speak to the front desk, and they told him that the therapist wanted a break. Seriously? We said we'd take the immediate appointment, if they comped them due to our inconvenience. Somehow our appointments magically reappeared after that.

MISC - Wifi service was out two of four days during our stay. More annoying than anything else but in the scope of the rest of the issues was magnified.

AIRPORT TRANSFER - To complete our dismay, my fiance realized his brand new iPhone slipped out of his pocket in our shuttle ride to the airport immediately after the driver left us (we were still outside the terminal). We called the hotel immediately and were told the driver could not turn around. They "never found it" - completely and disappointingly dishonest. If Henry is your driver, let us know if he is using an iPhone!

We will go out of our way to ensure none of our friends, family or clients stay here when visiting Playa Del Carmen, and more importantly that no one we know books their wedding here.

Le Reve Hotel & Spa takes notice of “bellabella4’s” post and would like to add the following.

Le Reve is reached within 40 minutes from Cancun International Airport and within 15 minutes from Playa del Carmen. For the last five minutes of the journey guests are driven over a dirt road taking them away from the all inclusive and mass tourism industry to Le Reve's secluded oceanfront location.

The beach in front of the hotel is considered a National Park and making any changes to it is strictly prohibited. Complimentary slippers are available. Twenty feet after entering the ocean its ground and water color is the Caribbean at its very best.

Le Reve regrets that its service performance was not at the usual level. As many Trip Advisor users have posted in the past Le Reve’s staff and services are the “gem” of the hotel. Le Reve is sorry that the “bellabella4” was not able to fully enjoy what others have described as the art of Mexican hospitality. The necessary actions are being taken to guarantee the continuity of the hotel’s services at all times.

Le Reve laments that “bellabella4’s” fiancé has lost his iPhone. Henry is a long time immaculate employee and it should be taken into consideration that the iPhone also could have disappeared at Cancun’s busy international airport while unloading suitcases or shortly after. The benefit of the doubt.

Le Reve is such a perfect sized hotel (25 rooms - adults only) that I have no idea why I have ever stayed at the larger resorts on the Mexican Riviera. The staff treat the hotel as if it is their own, their attitude is attentive but relaxed, so you never feel intruded upon. The accomodations are lovely. We stayed in a ground floor garden suite that felt incredibly private. My only minor complaint is that the outdoor roman tub in the garden suite takes about two hours to fill up and so is cold by the time you do actually get it filled up, its not particularly usable. We purchased the room through Jetsetter.com which was a great deal - Le Reve is a total bargain for what you get. The food was very good, especially lunch where you had a choice of about 15 ceviches among other selections. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is excellent with a lot of choice. We ate several dinners at the hotel and the food was reasonable priced and very good. The beach is lovely, in its own little area that is uncrowded. The shoreline is very rocky in front of the hotel, but we just walked north about 5 minutes to a stretch where there were no rocks whenever we wanted to jump in. Proximity to Playa Del Carmen is great. Had dinner at the Banyan Tree one night to mix things up which was lovely but very expensive. Worth doing once while you are there. All in all, totally enjoyable and relaxing and I only missed not having a television the first night (Oscar night!). I would definitely go back to Le Reve.

First of all, Le Reve is a charming small hotel with some very friendly staff and a great wedding planner. It is in a nice location and despite being by other big hotels manages to feel private. There are some nice staff there as well. But we left being annoyed at some serious aspects of the hotel. First, It has a cold pool. Secondly, we were paying a lot to be there and felt more than a litttle nickel and dimed. They should consider an all inclusive package, especially for weddings when the hotel is bought out by a group, which would make for a more relaxing experience.

We understand that it was not an all inclusive but it still felt negatively because one of our boys got sick likely from the food while there, and after getting a bowl of broth sent to our room, I was annoyed to be charged $10 US for the soup. I would feel more positive about our experience had they sent the soup gratis with a nice note from the staff saying that they hoped he was feeling better. They knew he was very sick and we became trapped inside the room for two days with him. Simple gestures would have been nice and would have gone a long way with us.

We also got constantly nickel and dimed about drinks (for example, being asked to sign a ticket for even untouched bottles of water, and even at the wedding when there was an open bar we got approached to sign a bill ticket for a cocktail).

Finally, we had a bug infestation in our room, and suffered dozens of unsightly bites. The hotel admitted they were going to bomb before we got there to deal with the bugs but had decided not to.

Le Reve Hotel & Spa takes notice about “Ingrid58’s” feedback and would like to add the following:

As many hotels in the Mexican Caribbean Le Reve Hotel & Spa does not heat its pool. Especially nowadays, Le Reve believes that the still comfortable winter time average water temperature does not justify the additional energy that would be consumed to increase the water temperature.

Le Reve Hotel & Spa does offer “all inclusive” and “European plan” packages for the hotel buy out. When an “European Plan” package is chosen every food and beverage order that is being charged/signed to a room bill has to be supported by the guest’s signature. Le Reve Hotel & Spa understands that the signing is not pleasant but necessary in order to be able to guarantee that guests only pay for their own room bill. Le Reve Hotel & Spa regrets that the guests felt “nickel and dimed” by this. During special events when an open bar is offered there are no signatures needed, however when special drinks are ordered that are not included in an open bar’s beverage list the signature becomes necessary.

Le Reve Hotel & Spa respects strict preparation and hygiene procedures and is very sorry that one of “”Ingrid58’s” sons got sick and that “Ingrid58’s” family was not able to fully enjoy its entire stay.

Le Reve Hotel & Spa’s secluded grounds are surrounded by local flora and fauna where guests enjoy a high level of privacy. Despite that Le Reve Hotel & Spa regularly fumigates with the latest ecological fumigation equipment it is unfortunately not able to fully control nature.

Le Reve is a beautifully designed hotel. Located just a few kilometres up the coast from the centre of Playa. The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant was of a high quality. The fact that there are only 26 rooms, and that it is adults only, means that the hotel always feels calm and relaxed. There was never more than one person in the swimming pool and always plenty of choice re which sun lounger to relax on. Also with so few guests, it means that the beach front is also quiet and spacious. The gym is very basic (just a couple of spin bikes, a multi gym and some free weights). A great place to relax and unwind for a few days.
