My wife first experienced Ajua Maya in 2007 while she was in Playa for a business conference that held an event there. She was so impressed by the entire experience that she insisted that were return together when the conference was over. We are both in love with this restaurant and would never consider a trip to Playa without a visit. Coming from Las Vegas where there certainly is no shortage of fine dining, celebrity chef restaurants and the like... I'll take this place anytime. The food is excellent with a variety that goes well beyond Mexican or Mayan though I would highly recommend both. If you want a great steak or pasta you can't go wrong there. The flambés are to die for and the drinks and deserts are the best. Service goes beyond excellent, it also entertains. Entertainment is also something that I highly rate here. While there last week we stopped by just to have a drink only to find probably the most entertaining mariachi band that I've ever heard playing. Imagine the three tenors with guitars...nothing like I've ever heard in Mexico. before. Our best to Brenda and Jorge. You put your heart and soul into Ajua and we wish you the best in your new location.

Thank you so very much for finding us again and loving our new Ajua Maya. It has been quite a journey from Calle 4 to Vía 5a in the new Playa del Carmen´s 5th Avenue. We appreciate each and every review and thank all of our patrons for taking the time to recommend us and our fabulous staff on TripAdvisor.

We hope to see you again soon and we promise to keep the flambés flaming and the drinks cold until your return!

We had our wedding reception in 2010 at Ajua Maya. We were back in Riviera Maya for a friend’s wedding. We loved Ajua Maya so much the first time we made the party go back there on this trip.
We showed up to the old location not knowing they had moved. The move was a mistake. The upscale atmosphere does not fit with the fun and festive attitudes of the wait staff. And it seems so far away of all the action of 5th Avenue. Luckily the food is still amazing and is why we will return next time. The steaks were done perfectly, the Cesar salad was delicious and the flaming drinks are fun to watch being poured.

Thank you for enjoying us again in our new 5th Avenue location.

We understand that some of our loyal customers are disappointed we are no longer on 4th Street under a palapa; however, sometimes destiny leads you into a new path that you must follow, as was the case with our relocation. The land we had rented on Calle 4 was sold and we lost our lease ... after three months, we found our Via 5a location which we felt could maintain the warmth of our service and quality of our chef's creations.

We look forward to your return ... and hope you will come to love our new look!

We ate at this restaurant on our last night in Playa. It had been recommended by one of the concierges at our resort. It had been a rainy day and we almost didn't go. That would have been a terrible mistake. We were a party of 5 and were seated outside. The ambience was fun as they have a small house band playing. The food was fantastic as were our servers, Enrique and Rogelio. The owner (American born) was sitting at a nearby table. She came over to us and chatted awhile as did her husband (Mexican born). We also had the opportunity to meet the chef, Pedro Balam. He is a very talented chef. The food is very fresh and inventive. I would definitely return to this restaurant the next time I am in Playa. If you are lucky, you might even be entertained by Rogelio with a few magic tricks.

We ate here one night, and really enjoyed it. It was very sunny and all the tables were in direct sun when we got there, so we choose an inside table. We had an appetizer and drinks. At this time we asked if we could move to one of the tables outside that were now in shade and much cooler. They were so accommodating, making move very easy. I had the fish fillet which was wonderful. My husband had the Mexican platter, which was offered for two but they graciously let him order for one. He enjoyed it very much. Waiter entertained us, bring our drinks atop his head.

The food was excellent, the Latin music was great in the background, and the waiters made the meal an event. I agree with one of the other recommendations on TripAvisor to visit this restaurant early in your trip, because you will want to go back again. The menu has great variety, and every course from appetizers to desserts and coffee have options for table side preparation (typically on fire)! The Caesar salad was amazing, as were the sizzling shrimp and sizzling calamari appetizers. Flaming entrees were fun to watch, and delicious. Highly recommended!
