“Wonderful hotel, great service!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2013

We stayed here for just one night in April 2013 at the end of our honeymoon. We had been staying in an all inclusive and were so refreshed to get back to a hotel that was more our style in El Acuario. The hotel is an oasis in downtown Playa Del Carmen - our room looked onto 25th Ave but was still very quiet at night. The grounds are beautiful, the pool is well maintained, and the rooms have a/c, safety deposit boxes, and a small kitchen with a small fridge, some utensils and a cook top if you want to make some of your own meals. Rooms are simple with hard beds but clean and all linens are provided. We were able to check in early when we arrived at 11am and leave our luggage at the hotel until 4pm the day of our check out as we had a late flight.

The management went above and beyond when we realized we had left our passports in the safety deposit box once we arrived at the airport in Cancun. We just called her and she sent them in a secure taxi which arrived at the airport within 30 minutes. It was a life saver! She also helped us find a kite board shop for my husband and negotiated with the taxi for us! We would definitely go back.

Stayed here for a week in march 2013. Everything was perfect. Really clean rooms, courtyard and pool. Staff so friendly and anything you ask for is done instantly and with a smile. The location is perfect as it's not bang in the centre of the busy tourist area so is really relaxing, yet it's only a 5 min walk to the beach and 5th avenue. Another great thing about the location is that there are lots of lovely local restaurants around serving much cheaper (& better quality) meals and snacks than anything we found around 5th avenue. Additionally, having the collectivo bus depot right around the corner was a bonus as we took trips to Tulum and Akumal with ease and for a few pesos.
The rooms are spotlessly clean, have air-con, fan and wi-fi and the fresh coffee(free!) was a must have every morning when we were lazing on the balcony enjoying the ambience of this wonderful little hotel.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in playa del carmen, if I return it will definitely be to this place!

Wow we loved the acuario hotel. All the reviews were right. It is small, clean, close to everything, amazing courtyard and pool area. Dianne was great and so were all the seasonal residents we met there. As soon as we arrived we felt like we were at home. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Daily maid service was awesome as well as happy hours around the pool after a busy day at the beach. I will miss my morning hammock relaxation therapy. Can't wait to come back next year. Thanks again Dianne for having us, best vacation ever!!!!!

Everything was really great! The location, our room, the owner Cristine was very nice and the stuff helpful. The room contains a bathroom, a small kitchen corner, fridge, air conditioner, TV and a small area in front of your room, where you can hang a hammock. There is a small pool in the middle of the cortyard and sunbeds across it. Everything was always clean and it was really enjoyable to live there during our vacation. If we are going to visit Playa we'll book the same nice El acuario hotel!

Room Tip: All the rooms are clean and in good condition.

I read a lot of reviews before reserving my room at El Acuario and I just have to tell you that this place is the only place I would EVEN consider in PDC. Nothing short of feeling at home when you aren't even at home. Diane, my new amigos, has much more than simply a hotel going on here. The staff, each and every one of them, made me feel welcome from the time that I entered the lobby until the time I left early this morning. If you are looking to feel like you are in Mexico and don't mind a 5 minute walk to the beach; check it out! And right around the corner on Calle 4 y Avenido 20 is a bar-b-q chicken place with half a chicken for 40 pesos that is out of this world. I am going back to Playa del Carmen for sure and you will never guess where I am staying!

We just love this hotel. This was our first trip to Mexico and we would definitely come back. We met many beautiful people there. Manager Diane was very helpful and nothing was problem. Everything is very close from hotel. Bus station, beach, colectivo depot,5th avenue... We still miss this place.
The room was cleaned every day, fridge, microwawe,tv,bathroom, aircondition, balcony with hammock and pool view.
There is no restaurant in hotel but many places to eat around.Beautiful omelettes from Mr.Marshal or El Fogon restaurant just few blocks away.
We took colectivo to Akumal ( beautiful beach where you can swim with turtles) or Tulum (wonderful beach,no tourists, mayan ruins)
If you are not looking for All inclisive hotel definitely pick this hotel.
You will not be disappointed.
Thank you very much EL ACUARIO

I just loved this hotel from the very minute our stay began. The rooms are so clean and the surroundings very peaceful. For the first couple of days there was no hair-dryer in my room and I asked the staff but due to the language barrier he couldn't help much. On the very next day the manager Diane made sure that we had a brand new 'Revlon' blow-dryer in our room and that was such a lovely gesture(we needed it all the time since we kept going in and out of the water). You will never find this kind of personalised service in big resorts which will cost you almost twice the price for your stay.
Most of the other points have been covered by other reviewers below. Just one drawback of this hotel - there's no breakfast available and there's no restaurant at all inside for any meals. But you can find the most reasonable Mexican food at 'El Fogon' two blocks away. We had dinner there 4 or 5 times and each time we loved it.
Regarding supermarkets - megastore was too good, very neat, vareity of items and competent staff. AVOID WALMART!! It was more like a zoo and the staff there need to get a lesson or two on speed and good service from the supermarkt staff in the UK who are twenty times busier on any given day!! Nobody could speak English and it's a nightmare if you get billed incorrectly!!

Thanks Diane for the warm hospitality. We had a wonderful stay at this most reasonably priced hotel and I give it a 10/10 in all the categories. We also met some very friendly people from across the Atlantic and had a lovely time chatting away. CERTAINLY RECOMMEND IT!!

Room Tip: All rooms are equally lovely and peaceful
