“Great property -a few gaps in service and food”
Reviewed 9 February 2014

We stayed here the first week of February at a 2 bedroom ocean club villa. Villas are terrific with all the comforts you would expect from a Banyan tree property - having stayed and Phuket and Bintan resorts in the past you'll not be disappointed. The location near the beach was perfect and would not have wanted to be with the main villas as it was quiet and peaceful and a quick walk to get ice, food or beverages from the beach restaurant.
Spa is spectacular. My wife and I enjoyed pamper days. Therapists are from Thailand and Indonesia.
The real miss at this resort is the spotty service and food. The quality of the food is good fresh and cooked property just a little bland and not as inventive I would have expected. Best food was the buffet breakfast (include this in your room) which had a plethora of options fresh fruit, 6 kinds of juice, Mexican options etc. The beach restaurant was also very good but only open for lunch which in my view is a miss as it would have been very nice to dine there at night overlooking the beach and surf.
Thai place as nice but not what I expected from a traditional Thai restaurant, spice as taken down so many notches it was bland.
A few gaps in service requests as we asked for our pool to be adjusted to the right temp which took most to the week to get right.
Overall a very nice resort, need a few tweaks to make it perfect.

Room Tip: If your taking a two bedroom get close the beach. Only 20 or so villas. Its a hike to main resort...

Have stayed in a Pool Villa at Banyan Tree Mayakoba in Jan / Feb 2014. A wonderful place to relax and unwind! A fantastic location in the mangroves of Mayakoba, don't miss the eco tour to see the oreols, iguanas and crocodiles.

This place is amazing! The pictures really can't do the place justice - it is breathtaking in person!

The grounds are gorgeous and meticulously kept - every day we saw workers cleaning, moving the lawn - no inch of the resort is forgotten. The employees are all so friendly and professional.

The villas are incredible - every detail of the design was well thought out - the outdoor tub is great, the, the high ceilings, the plunge pool and garden - everything adds up to a relaxing stay. The golf carts to the beach or wherever else you want to go come promptly and the drivers are friendly.

We loved laying out on the beach and relaxing - the beach service is great. We also played tennis several days, which was great! If you have your own racket, you may want to bring them as the rackets they loan you are beat up.

Oh and the SPA! Expensive - but a a massage like any other!

The only con is that the food is all very expensive. But that is common with any isolated resort. They do provide free bottled water and fresh fruit every day, which is great.

Room Tip: They are all amazing! You can't go wrong!

Overall the Banyon Tree is a beautiful hotel. We had a wonderful vacation and got lots of rest and relaxation. The hotel grounds and public facilities are BEAUTIFUL and the staff couldn't have been better. My issue with the Banyan Tree is primarily in the Villa, particularly the outdoor areas. The outdoor area was not well maintained. The furniture is extremely old and worn and the pads on lounges were extremely moldy and dirty. We were able to get a replacement but it wasn't much better. There is also paint all over the tiles not isn’t a huge deal but speaks to the lack of care being shown in outdoor maintenance. Also not all Villas have a view of the lagoon. This makes it feel like you are very shut in and could be anywhere...not Mexico. The pool area at the beach is also average. It is small and most chairs lose sun around 1PM. Based on these factors, the Banyan Tree is not worth the money. Stay at the Rosewood if given the chance. It is amazing in every way and the restaurants are much better.

Wonderful! Privacy and Service are the strengths of this hotel (in addition to the great location and amazing villa).
It's relatively close to Playa Del Carmen which is worth a visit.
Villas are spacious, eco friendly and luxurious. I loved the beach bag and bathroom amenities on disposal in the room.
The beach restaurant is excellent ( tacos, guacamole and margaritas in particular). The hotel is eco friendly (which is a key point to me especially in a region where hotels pop up everywhere), it blends into the local nature. I encountered many small animals (raccoon, birds...)
The buggy car service works very well (not a long wait).

The only negative point is about the Thai restaurant Saffron. It is ridiculously expensive. Prices would have been fine if the food had been amazing but it wasn't. It was average (not in my top list). The only good point about this restaurant is the landscape. It's on the water with candlelights everywhere. Would love it if the food was better.

The hotel is absolutely amazing. It certainly belongs to my TOP3 list. It is quite pricey but it's worth it. I would add that it suits couples, families and even friends sharing a villa together.

The physical surroundings...Beautiful. The vacationers...Rude! This resort is absolutely beautiful, there is no arguing that. However, with a heavy price and tranquil feel I personally believe some rules should be set, like other high end resorts. First, it is great that Wifi is including because they will charge you for everything else...including a 31% fee on all food/drink, but it should be limited to just internet use and zero facetiming. It seemed as though a large majority of foreign visitors took it upon themselves to use Facetime with some at breakfast, dinner, and at the pool right next to you. Facetime is not a quiet activity, it involves someone on the other end of the phone basically screaming while viewing and speaking to the other person sitting right next to you at $100 breakfast. There is no courtesy whatsoever or having a relaxing meal or time by the pool or beach. If the resort wants to sells a quiet and relaxing experience, then they need to stop this asap. We could not get away from it. Putting that aside, it was absurd to be paying 31% on top of any food and drink purchased as this was not the case even at the Fairmont or Rosewood just next door, Plan on paying for three people, although there only may be two of you because the 31% is as if you're paying for an additional person. All in all, the staff was great and so friendly. The transportation between the resorts can get frustrating because calling in advance does absolutely nothing, so dont waste your time. They could stand to work on logistics since it is supposed to be a 5 star resort. The food was mediocre, the usual resort food. We ate at all three properties and the Thai restaurant at the Banyan tree proved to be the best. We won't be back, there are much nicer properties and locations around the world to visit other than Playa, but it was a fun birthday weekend and escape to some warmer weather for a few days.

We could not have been happier with the time we spent at Banyan tree. The staff was exceptional, paying attention to every detail and really making you feel welcome in their space. The huge villas with tons of privacy was a welcome change from the typical hotel room that shares walls and noises! All of the facilities at Banyan Tree Myakoba were pristine and to the highest standards. The stay at a place like this is not cheap but you get everything you pay for. One of the most amazing things we noticed was how the staff that cleaned and prepared our room throughout the day were never seen! They went in while we were at breakfast, lunch, and dinner to make our villa ready for the next time of the day, in the afternoon there were large towels on the outdoor sun chairs for relaxing, all of the candles were replaced by the outdoor tub, all of our clothes carefully folded or hung up, and tons more. I could go on for hours about our stay, it was over the top awesome. A must for anyone that wants a very relaxing time in a beautiful setting.

Room Tip: Get one on a lagoon, we were in 403 and it was great!
