My husband and I have been waiting to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and 50th birthday. We knew this was going to be the place for us, we just had to make the time.
Mission accomplished.
We were transported by private Escalade to the Banyan Tree. Check in was flawless. We stayed in a courtyard pool villa and it was incredible. Our private indoor and outdoor living space was romantic, relaxing and private. The candles, incense, music, windows, guest amenities, thick towels, slippers, beach totes, flowers, fresh fruit, mood lighting all enhanced the experience.
We stayed one week and never felt as if we needed to leave the property.
The food was lovely. Breakfasts in Oriente are a must. We would arrive around 10AM and eat enough to tide us over until dinner. Don't forget to ask about the sparkling wine cocktail of the morning. For dinner, we ate at Saffron three times, Tamarind and Sands once each, room service twice. In our opinion, there were always enough restaurants open (at least two out of three, plus room service) for options. Do not forget to try the room service option for dinner. Our dinners were delivered hot (not warn) and with all the condiments, candles, silverware, crystal needed for royalty. We ate both of these dinners outside by our pool and jacuzzi.
It you choose to dine outside at Saffron, they have a "moon table" that overlooks the lagoon. Ask for it when you make reservations. It's semi private and extremely romantic.
In the late morning, early afternoon we would ride our bikes to the beach. There were huge loungers with comfy pads and thick towels waiting for us. The beach attendants were helpful with positioning our chairs and beach umbrellas as the sun revolved. Drinks were of high quality (grey goose, herradura, etc.) and plentiful. Often times we would be the last to leave the beach club and they had "spotters" on the path to assist us with finding the way back to our villa on our bicycles.
The spa is incredible. We had several treatments and all were first rate. The actual treatment lasted as long as advertised. The rain forest is an experience. If you indulge in the Valentine's special (3 hrs. of bliss with your companion) it's a private session there.
The exercise room has very nice equipment but is on the small and warm side. This is one of the few recommendations that I would have for Banyan Tree Mayakoba. Enlarge the space and install fans.
The golf course was gorgeous. It is hosting a PGA event later this month. Price was reasonable and the head pro very friendly.
Having stayed at Las Ventanas in Cabo is a close comparison. Accommodation wise, BTM has the most luxurious villas in the market. We will definitely return.

Our stay was Jan. 23- 29th and we had a wonderful time and experience! Villas are truly amazing- very private, wonderful bedroom/beds, rainshower & deep outdoor tub, high ceilings with views to a perfect outdoor/private pool area. Didn't want to leave the Villa but when you did, staff were available to assist with any request. Breakfast buffet at Orient was superb as were the manager and staff- a great way to start every morning:) We only had dinner at Saffron which was a great dining experiece- very romantic and personalized service overlooking the water. My wife had a private cooking lesson- cost $60 (Thai Food) and she was treated like royalty and had a great time with cook/staff. Take the free boat tour (45 minutes) and see the wildlife in the mangroves around the resort- we highly recommend this. Beach Club and beach area a bit small but staff are great and you can always take a walk on the beach! An overall wonderful resort and while we agree with some previous comments about occasinal service inconsistencies, the staff are very willing to address any items brought to their attention. The hotel staff added to the experience as the people were wonderful and we loved talking to them- we will definitely be back and highly recommend this resort- especially if you want a private, romantic getaway! Do try the Spa as it is as good as you will get anywhere! (Laura, Manuel, Marco, and all the other wonderful staff- thank you so much for a vacation of a lifetime! Your Canadian guests_ Dolores & John miss you!

This resort truly is. The villas are spacious, comfortably appointed and very private. The courtyard area of the villa we stayed in was so nice, we spent several afternoons just hanging out there. The staff is professional, friendly and attentive without being over-bearing. You get the impression that they truly care, not just seem to. The overall design and architecture of the buildings and property is superb, the perfect blend of Asian and Mayan esthetic. The planners took special care to preserve the natural environement and natures abounds. The whole place exudes tranquility. We enjoyed the food, especially the breakfast buffet that satisfied a wide variety of international tastes. We wished that The Orient (breakfast restaurant) was open for dinner as well offering an additional option for dining. The hotel staff were very accommodating and made sure that our needs were met. Ask, and anything you wanted was yours. We especially want to thank Laura, the concierege, for all that she did to make our stay so wonderful. Other notable staff that we'd also like to thank are: Alejandro, Carlos, Eduardo, Ernesto, Federico and Omar, but there are many others whose names we cannot recall. Thank you, thank you for making our much needed vacation so wonderful. We look forward to our next visit, hopefully soon!

This hotel is a budding star. The concept is brilliant. The Villas are huge and self contained. Outdoor bathtub, spa, pool, and great big lounge beds. Very clean. We were outside at all times - riding our bike to the ocean and sitting in our back yard, bathing in our outdoor tub. The messages and spa services are outstanding. The only drawback is the service - well intentioned but needs refinement. Responses to requests were usually really slow or flawed. All was done with the best intentions and a graceful smile - so it is hard to criticize them. I believe that with time, they will work out these kinks and this place is a winner. The food is adequate but could be better. Saffron is the only restaurant we really liked.

I would avoud this place like a plague, i had my room turned down the first night and as i left for dinner, i forgot something and when i walked back to my room i saw about 8-10 people in the bushes outside my balcony window and the turn down service inside.. They are all working together to clean out the rooms.
I had camera stolen and diving gear stolen. A watch and some other items.
The hotel takes guest to a fake police center that they control and help to cover up the crimes..
I would avoid this place even if you think it looks pretty and good.
