Just returned from 7 nights at El Faro, with my husband and 2 kids (8 and 10). We rented unit Reef 202 through VRBO. We loved everything about El Faro.

The unit was large, clean and well decorated. Daily cleaning (including fresh linens) and a purified water cooler is a plus. We have stayed at bigger more expensive condo resorts in Mexico that did not include either.

The pool is large in comparison to other units in the same area, Note: the pool is deep for smaller kids - 4.5 ft. But, there is a small shallow kiddie pool. There were always plenty of chairs, but you have to request an umbrella from Wicky's. There was a band by the pool on Sunday. Bands were scheduled for additional days, but were cancelled due to rain.

The beach is perfect. So much calmer than Cancun. Also, the beach in front of El Faro is not filled with boats, so the kids could swim. The stretch of beach to the North is filled with many boats making it difficult to swim.

El Faro is located close to everything. It is 1 block off of 5th Ave with all the shops and restaurants. It is only 5 block to the Walmart, but you will have to take a taxi home if you have a lot of groceries.

I would highly recommend El Faro to families or couples without kids.

Encanto El Faro is a lovely property. We stayed in a two bedroom, two bath unit. It had a great view of the infinity pool, beach and ocean. The air conditioning worked at a premium. The unit had three tv's and daily maid service. It is located in the heart of everything. You could walk a block to 5th avenue. If you went to the left or the right you would see a lively, bustling group of people enjoying Playa del Carmen. Sylvia and Ramon who worked at El Faro were so professional and kind. It was greatly appreciated. A good stay and I and mi esposo certainly look forward to returning very soon.

My family and I stayed at El Faro Coral #104. The condo was absolutely perfect with a great location. We stayed 4 full weeks and met several other families renting here. What we discovered was that not all the condos are "set up" the same. Our condo had free wi-fi, and free phone calls to the US, BUT it only had one TV, even though it was a 3 bedroom, and our condo did not have a DVD player. All other condos we visited had 2-3 TV's with DVD's and no wi-fi, this wasn't a huge deal, but just an example of each unit being a little unique. The location of this condo is perfect as well, it is literally 1 block from the quinta (main shopping street), 5 blocks from Walmart, and on the BEST beach area in my opinion. We did it all while we were here and are already planning a return to this condo next summer! I could go on and on about how great this condo is, we are picky travelers and this condo met our expectations. We did have problems with the hot water one day and a light being out, both problems were fixed that day!

Room Tip: Look specifically at comments from each unit as they are all different.

Our condo, Coral 302, was a two story condo, at the back of the complex with a gorgeous view of the beach, ocean, and entire pool area. The condo had everything we needed (cook ware, utensils, glass ware, towels (bath and beach), cooler, washer/dryer, etc, etc, etc). It was spacious and beautifully decorated. One of the best features of the condo was the wonderful, nearly sound proof, windows and doors. It was great to be able to sit on the balcony and listen to the music at Wicky's or Zenzi and ocean, but then, when we closed the sliding doors... it was all gone. Wonderful!

The beach is nice. The sand is mostly soft with some bits of shell and coral. The ocean right in front of El Faro was perfect for swimming most of the time. We enjoyed the pool area and the comfortable pool loungers a lot. However, it would be nice if the condo complex would invest in some more sun umbrellas. The condos only have so many and they ran out a few different times during our stay. I can only imagine how early you’d have to get out there to get an umbrella during high season! We were told that we could rent an umbrella from Wicky’s if we really wanted one. That seemed a little silly to me.

The staff was courteous and attentive, though not really outgoing and friendly like we’ve encountered elsewhere in the area.

We rented through HomeAway and it was a little strange trying to get things done. We had to contact the condo owner (via a cell phone that the owner left in the condo for us) and then the owner would call the front desk and request whatever service we needed (like replacing our big bottle of drinking water). Maybe this is the norm? This was our first time renting through VRBO/HomeAway.

Would we return? Most likely. However, we would prefer a ground floor unit next time. It would have been so nice to be able to quickly access the fridge, liquor cabinet, and snack food without climbing three flights of stairs (because there’s only one elevator and it’s waayyyy over there (in the Surf building, by the front desk)).

Overall? It’s a nice place but IMHO it’s not really worth the price they ask for it, so if you go… make sure you get a deal!

For the second time in six months we stayed at El Faro on our trip to Playa Del Carmen. You cannot ask for a better location, better beach, better views and just a lovely place to stay. Clean, modern, well kept and pleasant staff. For this trip we were in 301 - In the center section of the buidling (I forgot the name now, but I believe it was Surf)! The condo was great, the view was very good although not quite as good as where we stayed in December '10, corner unit second floor....incredible views and sunrise every morning. For the price you pay to stay at El Faro per night, you simply cannot get more value for your dollar. Wal Mart is a short walk away and when the staff see you returning with bags they are eager to help! A couple of minor drawbacks. No bathrooms near the pool (they were closed for some reason) so we had to make many trips upstairs all day - which is a good thing for exercise purposes. And for some reason, if you want one of the nicer, Corona or other logoed umbrellas on the beach, you have to pay 50 pesos for its use for the day - I really don't get that, but it is what it is. I can assure you we will stay at El Faro again, we are die hard all inclusives in Mexico fans, but for a change of pace and good value for your money, you cannot beat it! You will not be disappointed!

Obviously from my tile a great location, close to restaurants and shopping. Also, right on the corner a block away is a Starbucks and Ice cream!

I stayed in Reef 103, not my favorite room being on first floor and view wasn't great. I think 203 would have been better but overall a great stay.

As others mentioned pool is great, beach and beach club right there, restaurant in the building is a great place for a drink and view, check out the restaurant across the street for breakfast.

Would definitely return! Great for families or a group of friends!

This place is in a GREAT location - it's on the beach, next to a great bar and in the heart of playa del carmen, what more could you ask for. The room was really clean with filtered water and a balcony with a great view. The pool is right on the beach and on some afternoons they have a band play between the pool and beach which was ideal! Then before dinner you can pop next door for some nibbles and a drink where they have a band playing all night long. The heart of Playa del Carmen - i.e. the shops, restaurants, bars are literally the next street up so only a minutes walk away - if that. We were unfortunately only here for 2 1/2 days so spent one whole day hiring a car and going to Hidden Worlds (ziplining, cave swimming, great staff) and then further south to Tulum (ruins by the sea). In hindsight we should have hired the car from the Cancun airport when we arrived and dropped it back on our departure as the hotel has free parking and the roads felt a lot safer than we expected to drive along.
