“Relaxing Vacation.”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

My wife and I returned from a week vacation at this wonderful resort last week, and I already miss it. Everything about this place is first class. From the moment we reserved the a la carte restaurants on line, to the arrival in Cancun and then to the reception at the RH, everything went smoothly.
The Beach. The resort was not full, and therefore the beach had plenty of room, as did the swimming pool. Great, white sand, beautiful sea colours, nice breeze: paradise!
The Food: all the restaurants are great, but especially the Ventanas, excellent food, excellent presentation. We enjoyed being served by Omar there. But all waiters were amazing: thanks to Isis (expecting a baby), Isis (another one, who kept calling me by a different version of my last name, but she was so good I never bother correcting), Jorge, Laura, and so many others equally good.
The Room: our room (luxury room) was very nicely appointed, with all the amenities we could think of. Although located in Villa 30, adjacent to the Riu Playacar (very noisy) we were able to sleep well in our comfortable king-sized bed. Layta, our concierge, was fabulous. Thanks for everything Layta.
Entertainment: not much, but then we knew about this from reading the reviews. Maybe a place to dance a bit would have been nice.
The Grounds: immaculate, clean, beautiful.
The Weather: although the forecasts kept on saying thunderstorms and rain, we had 7 days of sun.
Conclusion: I would recommend this resort wholeheartedly to anyone. It is that gorgeous. We will definitely be back.

To the management of RH: keep it up.

Dear Nedo D,

Thank you for choosing Royal Hideaway for your home away from home in the Riviera Maya. We were delighted that you enjoyed the attentive and professional service from our staff, as that is always our goal. Omar, Isis, Jorge, Laura and Layta work very hard and were thrilled by the recognition.

Your comparison of Royal Hideaway to paradise reinforces our dedication to maintaining our beautiful property. We aim to provide an oasis-like atmosphere, so our entertainment is low key. We do have live music or karaoke every night in our Bar Allegria, in addition the Piano Bar and Club Royale, our dinner theater. Also, Playa del Carmen is only a five-minute taxi ride from our resort and offers an extensive variety of nightlife options.

We’re delighted to hear your feedback about the dining experience for our guests. Our Executive Chef Eugenio Villafaña is always enhancing our menus, and for an extra special experience we recommend The Chef’s Table at Las Ventanas. With this add-on dining experience guests have the opportunity to interact with Chef Villafaña and watch a live feed from his kitchen as he prepares a special delicacy just for them.

Thank you for recommending our hotel and we hope that you will visit us again soon.

Our first overnight visit in Mexico was at Royal Hideaway Resort Playacar. We were travelling with friends who had decided where we were staying, but we certainly enjoyed our visit. The check in experience following transfer from the Cancun Airport were top shelf. The refreshing towel and champagne were the right way to start off.

One mention on transfers. Arrange private transfers from the airport. The hotel sold transfers might take as long as 2.5 hours, while private transfers will have you there 45 minutes after clearing customs. Don't forget to stop at the Air Margaritaville outside the terminal and grab a frosty adult beverage prior to your transfer.

Our room was in a centrally located Villa 26. While in the "luxury" level, there was a small ocean view from our patio. The room was wonderful providing plenty of closet space and a very comfortable bed. There was the normal turn down service and the room was cleaned at least twice daily.

Each of the specialty restaurants were fabulous. Each evening meal was an experience to be remembered. The menus provided numerous choices, allowing people without high end culinary experience to sample numerous items that would normally not be within their pallate.

The Spices Breakfast was the best breakfast buffet ever with the normal stuff in addition to European style choices, an omlette station and fresh juices.

There were very few aspects of our stay that did not exceed expectations. RH is not the cheapest resort experience in Playacar, but it is worth every cent you would spend.

Room Tip: if in the luxury class room, get a villa in the center of the resort as noise from adjacent resorts...

This was my first time to Mexico and my first time in an all-inclusive. In short, the hotel got better and better each day. My girlfriend and I traveled from London and stayed here for 7 nights, which wasn't really long enough...once we got into the swing of things and over the jet lag the holiday was over! But overall we had an amazing time and would definitely come back to Playa del Carmen. We thought the hotel was good value for money but because of the bad food we may be inclined to book somewhere else.

The hotel - The service couldn't have been better, everyone was consistently friendly and really helpful. The room was great with a huge bed and balcony. Ours was a basic room but in a great location by the pool in the center of the resort, if you’re stuck with one on the outskirts then you can hear the music from the other hotels on either side until at least 12am. The beach was amazing, and its about a 20 min walk up it to get to Playa del Carmen which was great. You really get to see how nice the hotel was in comparison with others when walking along the beach and seeing the other hotels. However I would definitely say that the hotel isn't exactly a hideaway...its amongst a strip of hotels and holiday homes, with 2 'party' hotels bordering it directly on either side. The hotel has been open for about 12 years now and in some places is starting to show its age..like the yellow Jacuzzi bath tubs in our room... The pools were quite small and often filled with large groups of very loud Americans enjoying themselves, but this wasn't really a huge issue to us.

The food - The food really let us down, as every other review seemed to rave about it. Quite a few of the other European guests we spoke to there weren't too complimentary about the food either, which is basically really 'americanised', 'plasticy' with lots of ready made sauces. In fact I would say the food was the worst part of the holiday. The dinners were terrible and really disappointed us daily, as lunch was always nice and easy and the breakfast was great. The different restaurants around the resort all try way too hard and couldn't pull off the most basic of meals, and the food just ends up looking pretty, but being really tasteless and cheap. The Mexican, Italian and 'Asian' restaurants were collective low points and tasted as far from authentic as possible. By the end of the stay we preferred to just get a taxi into town and eat the amazing street food there. They also make you wear a shirt and trousers to eat at the restaurants for dinner, which they don't pre-warn you about, and really has no effect on smartening everyone up as some people turned up in basically sweat pants and collared Ed Hardy t-shirts. There's 2 main bars open in the evening which are often quiet but nice and relaxing. It was a shame that they had all the best, top shelf liquors but only 2 choices of wine in the all inclusive deal which were pretty average. However all the cocktails throughout the day were great.

Tips -The best part of the holiday was spending all day on the double beach beds. We would spend all day eating and drinking in the sun (the 2 by the Deck restaurant get the sun all day the others are always in the shade). Don’t pre-book the hotel transfer from the airport. Get a taxi from the airport, they made us wait around for about 30mins, and we found the hotel transfer over-charged us by $30. Also we went on one of the excursions (Xplor) organised by our concierge which was overall really fun - but if you can I would just organise it yourself, they stuck us on this bus that took 75mins to do a 15min journey because it picked so many people up, and then spoke in Spanish about a different destination to ours for the entire time..not good! I would also warn you that you are expected to tip at all times so I would come prepared with US$, even at the buffet breakfast you were expected to leave something for the service.

Room Tip: if you get a ground floor room ask to be moved up a floor, they are way better and get more sun.

Our restaurants do require a dress code, which is clearly displayed online, and I’ve reviewed this with our staff to reinforce our policy.

This resort was never really on our radar but after going to so many resorts through the years, we had to up our choices because we won't settle for less. This trip was for our 6th anniversary and we wanted to stay at a resort that was adults-only and a bit classier than most resorts. After much researching on adults-only resorts, we both settled on this one. We decided we wanted to go to Royal Playacar back in February and did some serious price watching. When we finally saw it for $1500 all in with Air Canada Vacations, we knew that this was the best price (only to find out it dropped $400 per person exactly a week later). At either price, it was still a great price for what we would be getting. Everyone we spoke to at the resort was either a returning guest or was adamant about becoming a returning guest. This review will be an easy but difficult one to write because we want to do it justice. This is THE BEST resort we have ever been to and we want the review to be written perfectly so it will convince you that it's a resort you MUST go to. We can't say enough wonderful things about the resort and basically do not have anything bad to say about it.

But the flight there, that's a different story. It had to be the worst flight ever and by no means the airline's fault. We experienced horrific turbulence and a 50 foot drop. Needless to say, we were glad when we landed. The Cancun airport was a bit of a mess and there was a lot of lining up but once we were on the shuttle bus to the Royal Hideaway Playacar ("RHP"), we began our vacation. After 45 minutes, we arrived to paradise.

Check in
We arrived at 1:30 pm and the bellman took our luggage and directed us to the reception area where we were seated at a desk and greet with a glass of sparkling wine and a cold towel. We were given a map and a quick briefing about the resort. We had made a room request and our dinner reservations for the first four nights in advance. Our room key was handed to the bellman and were told to check in with our concierge at 3:00 pm as our room would be ready then. We made our way to the beach restaurant, The Deck in less than a minute (this resort is tiny, only 200 rooms and the walk from the lobby to the beach is under two minutes).

Room
We were lucky to have our room request accommodated. We requested a top floor with a king bed in building 27 or 31. After lunch we checked in with our concierge, Carolina and she directed us to room 2723. The room was filled with an aromatic scent of oranges. What a beautiful room! The washroom is huge with a tub, stand up shower, two sinks, toilet area and a large walk in closet with an electronic safe. The room has a desk, chair, coffeemaker, fridge (stocked with water, soft drinks and beer), a DVD/CD player that is also a iPod/iPhone docking station and a flat screen TV. I will point out some cool features about the room:

- Etro products - shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, bath foam, and soap
- Tons of towels
- Two luggage racks
- Bathrobes and slippers
- Clothes line in the bathtub
- Turn down service with mint chocolate on your pillows, the bed prepared for you to sleep, lights turned down, refresh of towels
- Washcloths
- Mini water stocked with bottled water (we requested this)
- Daily Royal Journal (to find out what restaurants are open and what guests are celebrating a special occasion)
- 24 hour room service
- The electronic safe does fit a iPad (we read on a review that an iPad won't fit, they are wrong)

During our stay our room was spotless. We really enjoyed the turn down service. The resort was kind enough to decorate our room with balloons and left a dessert plate as we were celebrating our anniversary. We were so impressed by this.

In each villa, you have a dedicated concierge who will take care of anything you need, from making your dinner reservations to special requests for your room to taking care of your breakfast order, luggage pick up and wake up call for your departure.

Food
Even though it's a small resort, there are a variety of restaurants to choose from. During high season, Spices and Las Ventanas is open for breakfast. Spices offers a buffet style breakfast and Las Ventanas offers an a la carte menu. For lunch, The Deck has an extensive menu while Spices serves a Mexican fare (sadly, we never made it here for lunch). For dinner, you need reservations, which can be made ahead of time or with your concierge. The restaurants are Spices (Mexican), Palazzo (Italian), Las Ventanas (their signature restaurant), Azia (Asian), The Grill (Grilled Specialties) and Club Royal (a theatre style dinner). All restaurants are a la carte and take about two hours because they serve 5-6 courses. Everything we ate was delicious and did not have one bad experience. What I liked was when you are greeted by the server, they always ask you if you have any food allergies and if you do, they will accommodate it. All servers are polite and will take care of you. Anything you want, they will do for you. An example of the quality of service you will get, they have a name card on your table and the servers will address you as Mr. & Mrs. [last name]. Please note that for dinner, men must be wearing a collared shirt, long pants (jeans are allowed at The Grill and Spices) and close toe shoes. People do dress up here.

Beach
As you may have read in other reviews, the beach at Royal Hideaway Playacar is indeed back. If you look at pictures from a few years back, you will see how much has been added to this beach. It is amazing what they've done. The week we were there, the ocean was flagged yellow to red most of the time but playing in those waves was amazing. If you know how to body surf, you'll definitely have some fun.

If you're too lazy to walk to the bar, the resort does provide beach service where you can order drinks and food (grab a green flag by the shower and just stick it in the sand when you want service). Just keep in mind that during low season, the resort does cut the staff down so your wait times can vary. Patience is key.

Staff
The staff at RHP are by far the best team of employees we have ever some across. They are always working hard but have a big smile on their face. They are always willing to please and will bend over backwards for you. They remember your name, what you like to eat and drink and will always tell you "It's a pleasure" when you ask them for something. Juliette and Roxy at the reception did a great job checking us in and out and ensuring that we had our first few reservations in place. Carolina, our concierge took care of us the whole week. Laura, Veronica and Norma, the lovely hostesses made sure we had the best table and that we always left the restaurant full. Alberto, Luis & Armando at The Deck kept the food and drinks coming. They made sure we were never without a drink in our hands. Isis at Spices who always made our green tea to go for breakfast. Jessie, Christopher, Pierre and Fernando and the lead guy of the entertainment team (we forgot his name), these guys work hard to entertain the guest from morning until night. There are so many others that helped us and made our stay so memorable but I do have to give a big thanks to Sarah-Kim Grune who helped us before we arrived at the resort with all the questions we had.

Check out
Luckily, we caught our concierge before she left for the day. We were able to arrange for a wake up call, luggage pick up and also for breakfast to be delivered to our room early in the morning. Our pick up time was 8:20 am so we were able to eat before heading to the airport. Check out was quite simple but we were definitely upset to be leaving.

You can check out our blog at www.beachjunkies.blogspot.com for a more detailed review of each restaurants and pictures

Wow! We are thrilled by your review and thank you for your gracious compliments about our resort. It is gratifying to know that the Royal Hideaway team exceeded your expectations, especially Carolina, Juliette, Roxy, Laura, Veronica, Norma, Alberto, Luis, Armando, Isis, Jessie, Christopher, Pierre, Fernando and Sarah-Kim. Our dedicated concierges are incredible and do their best to ensure guests are having a lovely time from making special dinner reservations to arranging excursions and more. We just returned from our 22nd. trip to Mexico, and our 52 Caribbean Vacation.
Our favourite area of Mexico is Playa Del Carmen-extremely safe area and one of the best beaches in all on Mexico. We usually stay at the Riu Palace Mexico, but got an amazing deal to the Royal Hideaway (half the normal price) through Air Canada Vacations, so we thought we would give it a try. We were extremely satisfied with this property.

Hotel: Adults only, about 200 rooms in 11 villas spread throughout the property, very nice rooms, huge bathrooms, safe, fridge stocked daily, robes, slippers, flatscreen, DVD player, etc. Beautiful, well kept grounds, multiple pools at the beach and throughout the property. Jacuzzis with various temps.

Restaurants: 6 restaurants-all a la carte except breakfast. Menus are large, and the food is wonderful, as is the service. Dinners typically take about 2 hours, and all are in very nicely decorated rooms. They even deliver lunch to you at the pool or beach if you wish. Book a couple of restaurants before you go, then you can book the rest upon arrival with your Concierge in your villa.

Beach- one of the best in Mexico--pure white sand, no rocks or seaweed to be found. You can walk both ways forever, and can walk into town on the wide beach if you wish-about 30 minutes. The walk into town on the street is very nice-past homes, condos, other Hotels, and is VERY SAFE--we have never experienced a problem here day or night.

Activities: this is a quiet resort with a few activities during the day-pool exercises, etc. but nothing major. They have one restaurant that is a dinner show in a theater setting which was quite good. A band in the Bar at night, and piano music in the restaurants. If you want a quieter, relaxing trip, this is the Hotel for you, if you want more action, but still upscale, I would suggest the Riu Palace.

Diving: they have a dive company on site: Barracuda Divers, but they have smaller boats and fewer dives per day than some other companies. I dove with Scuba Caribe as I have many times in the past. They are located next door at the Riu Playacar, or 2 doors the other way at the Riu Palace. They have larger boats which I prefer as it is easier to dress and they have large platforms at the rear to enter and exit the boat. Scuba Caribe has many dive masters and instructors, and are very friendly and safety conscious.

Certainly 2 thumbs up for thr Royal Hideaway Playacar.

Room Tip: The Villas-25, 26, 27(nearest the beach) are on the inside of the grounds, and will be quiter as the...

Dear Diver40,

On behalf of all the Royal Hideaway staff, I would like to thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to write such a detailed review about your stay.

We enjoyed reading your comments about the quality of our resort as our staff works hard to maintain these standards.

Our executive chef was thrilled to hear you enjoyed the restaurants, as he oversees all of the menus and works diligently to create delicacies that all our guests will love. For an experience of a lifetime, we recommend making reservations for the Chef’s Table at Las Ventanas. This extra service provides guests with a private one-on-one experience with the executive chef and his crew. Guests can watch a live feed from the kitchen, interact with the chef and enjoy 12 courses made specifically for them. It’s a treat! Also, we appreciate you pointing out the advanced dinner reservations is important, as all of our restaurants are quite popular with our guests. This can be done by contacting our customer service department at services@mx.occidentalhotels.com.

Our resort is a tropical oasis and the entertainment here is low key to complement our relaxed atmosphere. For extra night life, we always recommend heading to Playa del Carmen which is only a five-minute taxi ride from our resort.

Thank you again for your comments and recommendations. We look forward to welcoming you back for your 23rd trip to Mexico!

I had done extensive research on the mayan strip to figure out where I could go where I didn't have to worry about anything going wrong. I was very impressed with how everything panned out and the resort was amazing. I literally researched every resort before going, and because of the few bad reviews about food (mind you, from years ago) I was slightly skeptical about RH. I would DEFINITELY go back again! I am already planning my next vacation.

The staff are SO nice and SO helpful..I just loved the service at this hotel. From the concierge to the front desk, and breakfast/lunch/dinner staff, everybody was amazing. We tipped every time we ate or got a drink...and I felt so bad for those beach service runners and when people didn't tip. At a place like this I would expect that everyone tips...found it strange in the post below someone said it's not required.

My one fear was getting food poisoning...and the food here was AMAZING. I had the intention to limit what I ate..but once there..everything was so good and fresh I tried things I would have never tried before! Neither of us got sick once.

My next fear was security, as so many reviews of other 5 star resorts had theft problems.
I (didn't) but could have confidently leave things out of the safe and known they would still be there when I got back.

Positives:
- the personal concierges for each villa are very helpful
- Tea Time was a nice touch and my favorite!
- snorkel puerto morelos! we saw tons of fish, eels, sea turtles, and a whale shark. the staff were amazing! we booked it directly through the agent in the lobby of RH lobby...it was most legit this way and it ended up being a great experience and very reasonably priced
- food was amazing!! every breakfast, lunch, and dinner (except maybe one lunch when all the food we got was old...but we didn't care every other meal was great)
- beach was amazing! I wish other resorts couldn't wander onto the beach so much..as there were clearly people with wristbands snooping around and swimming in our section of the water..but luckily the RH resort wasn't full so there weren't too many people on the beach/in the water to begin with. This was really nice...didn't have to get up early to reserve chairs or anything.
- Air Canada vacations was great - transportation and service helped make the trip not stressful and smooth

Overall, I LOVED my vacation, and had an almost perfect time. Since I want this to be a thorough review, I will point out a few negative things (although, I had such a fantastic time that I wouldn't even complain).

Negatives:
- since there were torrential downpours for the first 2 days we were there, the resort did not have drainage to accommodate the rainfall - we were in villa 24...there was absolutely NO way to get out of our villa to go anywhere without walking through the flooded area.
I ruined 3 shoes ...considering you have to dress up for dinner it's not like I could wear flip flops...and the water was up past my ankle and thoroughly flooded. Our villa seemed to have the worst flooding from what I could see.
- with this rain, came mass amounts of tiny tiny ants all over our bathroom. I mean covering the wall completely...ALL over the sink..in our glasses and toothbrushes, etc. Really gross BUT we did NOT complain..(we already unpacked everything and really didn't want to move)...as I'm sure they would have tried to help the situation. We did mention it to the concierge, but the language barrier was so great that she ended up thinking we had a bird infestation instead of bug, and we just left it at that (haha).
- ok, I LOVE the staff and they work SO hard...but I would just mention that..on occasions they would forget to bring the coffee they offered us, water I asked for, side sauces...and they would never come or be remembered
- why do some guests have to be so poorly behaved and annoying? There were definitely a few blatant crowds who were loud, drunk, arguing in public, being inappropriate, etc. I mean...we weren't extremely angry with it but I did expect the crowd here to be more calm and respectful (specifically got the impression it was a quieter crowd at this resort)
- the "baracuda" shop next to the resort (the ones that offer the kayaks, para sailing, snorkeling, etc) were awful to deal with - we borrowed snorkling goggles ($20 deposit) and when we returned the goggles a few hours later, they said they lost our money and that we should come back tomorrow (yeah right - like I'd see that money again?). We had to stand our ground and say we weren't leaving without the money. He told us they carry no cash on site (how is that possible when they do rentals and schedule day trips?). Luckily as we were there someone behind us came in to rent something with cash...so we lucked out. We decided not to use their services (as we were planning to do a snorkeling trip with them), and bought our own goggles in playa del carmen (too bad though when they're supposed to be "free" to borrow)
- the activites at the resort are kind of non-existent unless they have a large group who actually want to participate. I woke up and skipped breakfast buffet for the Spanish lessons one day and even talked to the pool activity guide to see where they would be held, he said in 5 minutes on the deck..and i waited on the deck for 30 minutes and he never showed up (after JUST speaking to me about them). I found him later and he said he got caught up with bike rentals...but that's really too bad he wouldn't come let me know as he knew I was waiting. I was interested in some of the other activities too (salsa lessons?) but they never occurred during the stated time, so I gave up. Again, not of huge importance, but it would have been nice. (plus I didn't like wasting my breakfast and morning beach time waiting for the Spanish lessons)
- BRING BUG REPELLANT! i got destroyed..and I mean..destroyed..by mosquitos
- the night life was non existent. I got up super early to the beach to enjoy the sun as much as possible, so it didn't bother me..but for a lot of people I could see this being an issue
- the way the villas are set up, anybody coming in at any time of the night could be heard echoing as if they were right there with you in your room. It was insane how loud it was. Woke me up every time someone came home.

I want to go back now!!!
