Just returned yesterday. Traveled with my wife and 18 year old daughter. Very nice resort. Staff could not be nicer. Very clean. Food is good but, not great. Beach is one of the nicest we have every been to. Not much to do in the evening. If your are looking to relax and read a book this is the place for you, if you are looking for a party spot this is not it.

Room Tip: Do not get a room that faces the outside of the resort, it is loud.

This is truly a wonderful resort. We will certainly return.

Beach: this is one of my #1 criteria when looking for a winter getaway. The beach here is gorgeous. Soft white sand, very clean (no rock at all anywhere, no weeds in water unless high winds bring some in overnight which happened on 1 of our 7 days. ). It's wide and deep so no feeling of being overly packed in with other people on chairs. Small resort so not packed with people on the beach. My ONLY little regret is the devices they had for offering shade instead of the typical palapas but rather this canvas little tent. The issue was that it offered shade to your upper body but for most of the day, could not shade your lower body as well. Furthermore, the block your view to the side so while on your chair, you only see what is right in front of you. I love to look at the water from one end of the beach to the other, as far as the eye can see and with these things I could't do that. At least we didn't have to get up 6am to get one... By 8 or 9 am was sufficient. The spots at the pools seemed to fill up quickly though.

Restaurants/food: If you are vegetarian, you will be amazed at what this resort has to offer. This was by far the best food in taste, variety, and presentation of all resorts we've been to, including Secrets Maroma. Every single dish is presented beautifully and I was always impressed at how tasty everything was. In the morning, you have the option of an a la carte restaurant (The Deck) or a buffet restaurant (Spices). We preferred The Deck and the waffles with blueberry coulis and whip cream was my favorite dish. Lunch was served at the same two locations which was wonderful because they are right by the beach, gorgeous view! There are no buffets at supper time which is a good thing, we prefer a la carte restaurants. There 6 restaurants and they are all wonderful... Terrific food, beautiful decor, exceptional staff. The italian restaurant (Palazzo) even has a violinist playing amongst the tables while you dine, and at the Las Ventanas their is a pianist playing on a grand piano. Each of the restaurants has plenty of vegetarian options and I'm not talking plain pasta.... Original, wonderful, tasty vegetarian dishes that really impressed us! A few restaurant even had a vegetarian menu! At the Club Royal, you a treated to a table d'hôte while enjoying a show on stage. It's a wonderful setting, loved it. We got to our table, our name was on it, and it already had the vegetarian table d'hôte menu on it for us. Again, best food of any resort without a doubt. We highly recommend you write to the hotel a couple of weeks before you arive to make restaurant reservations: Mónica Muñoz at services@mx.occidentalhotels.com. We were able to get 4 reservation before our arrival and the rest were done on our arrival. On our last morning we were being picked up at 7am, before the restaurants opened so we had ordered room service )waffles!! And fruit) for 6am. It arrived as ordered, perfect.

Rooms: rooms were a little smaller that the newer resorts we've been to but more than big enough. Also, by getting a room on top floors, you have a cathedral ceiling with extra space. The decor is beautiful. DVD player included and DVD rentals available. The resort is a little older and therefore the trees and plants are more mature. The grounds are beautiful. It's a small resort, so cozy and serene... A few little spots were minor maintenance would be needed ( paint, caulking, etc) but certainly NOT a big deal.

Staff: everyone is so very friendly, polite, service-oriented, pleasant, and professional. The staff love to work there you can tell. Eric, our concierge in bld 27 was terrific. Went out of his way to accommodate our preferences and little requests. For example, my hubby likes to try different local beers so Eric had various beers put in our mini fridge instead of the one brand typically stocked. Although the all-inclusive packages says it includes tips, we encourage people to give a tip to the staff. They work so hard and they always seem so grateful for the tip.

Gym/spa: big and beautiful. Went pretty much every day. Modern professional grade equipment, lots of room, clean. Very nice.

Entertainment: other than the show if you eat at the restaurant Club Royale, there are no shows as you get at typical resorts. Here, you gat various style of music performed live by bands at the bar Allegria. Very cozy and relaxed. Good quality performers.

In summary, no hesitation whatsoever to recommend this place. Beautiful, perfect beach, exceptional food. However, if you're looking for a big party place, this may not be the best place for you. If you're looking for a nice relaxing luxurious getaway, you can stop searching, you've found it. Now go enjoy!!

Room Tip: We had read that rooms in the buildings that were in the center of the resort were preferable becaus...

After visiting the Royal Hideaway last year we decided to return this year. We arrived on Feb. 25th and stayed six nights. We found the grounds to be as beautiful and our room as clean and comfortable as last year. The food and drinks were all one could ask for.The beach was / is among the nicest in the world. The pool was nice but we spent most of our spare time in a cabana or under the palm trees. Our only issue was the late (10pm) dinner reservations which required interventions
by our concierge, thank you Alvaro. Thanks also for my wife's surprise birthday cake. The evenings at the outside cocktail bar were enjoyable and entertaining where Fanny kept the tequila flowing with a smile. We spent one evening on 5th ave in town and enjoyed the sites and sounds. All in all we've never been to a nicer and friendlier resort. Will we return a third time? Stay tuned.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2812. Close to the cocktail lounge and a beautiful view from our patio.

We spent a glorious week at the Royal Hideaway in late January. It was our fourth visit, even though we seldom repeat destinations. It is an elegant and peaceful retreat.
Service is exceptional throughout..although we would like to recognize our concierge, Delia, who exceeded our expectations. She has a very perky and pleasant manner and followed through on every detail. We also experienced exceptional service in the restaurants. Pedro at Palazzo was our personal favorite. He is a seasoned, professional waiter with just the right blend of casual elegance.

Room Tip: We stayed at Las Amapolas which is well situated. We prefer the second floor and a room facing in.

We were at the Hideaway at the end of February for 4 days. We've been coming to the resort since 2005 - missed 2006 when the resort was closed after Hurricane Wilma and also a couple of years when we went cruising. This was our 6th visit and we were not disappointed.
The Hideaway is a lovely resort. The grounds are amazing and the Villas spread around the resort lend to privacy and intimacy. We've always requested Villa 25 which is more or less in the middle of the resort, but a little closer to the main reception area. This year we had Room 2516 and this has a great private view of one of the smaller pools. Our concierge was Fernando and he treated us royally. He and the Villa's staff did a great job decorating our room for my birthday
and made me feel very special. The room itself - we find it perfectly adequate - not as large as the newer resorts but a spacious bedroom and sitting area leading on to a terrace (or balcony on the upper floor), a very compact bathroom with all essentials, including a separate shower. The resort is starting to show its age but every effort is made to keep up maintenance work and this isn't easy in the hot and humid climate that is Mexico.
Regarding the restaurants - we always had breakfast in Spices and what a wonderful buffet is offered there! I also had an omelet every morning and the omelet station there is wonderful with many fillings to choose from. Lunch we normally had in Spices as well and it was a much more sophisticated menu than we remember having had in the past. Armando was excellent keeping the service brisk and pleasant. Dinners we had in all the restaurants excepting for Azia as our stay was too short for that. Probably the most memorable dinners were at The Grill and Palazzo - the food and service both excellent. Afternoon champagne high tea was another great experience.
Probably the most memorable part of our trip was the staff and the wonderful service - they really do try to please and will bend over backwards to fulfill your requests. We did email beforehand to request Villa 25 and our dining reservations. A week before our trip the dining reservations were confirmed with the early times that we had requested and Villa 25 was confirmed when we arrived.
So all in all, another great stay at the Royal Hideaway and we hope to return again in the near future.

Room Tip: Villa 25 which is mid-resort.

This was our first trip to Mexico and we relied on our travel agent to help us with what we were hoping to find in Mexico. We wanted an all inclusive, adult property, with good food and great beaches and warm weather and Royal Hideway Playacar delivered this vacation to us!
It is an upscale smaller all inclusive hosting only 400 guests set in a beautiful setting with great beaches and pools and activities. The rooms were set in 5 or more buildings that only housed 20 guests or less with a personal concierge in each building to attend to our needs with reservations or activities we would want. Our concierge was Hector who knew it was my birthday and set up a birthday dinner and gift for me. He kept us informed every day of what was happening at the resort and what our activities were each day.
The food was phenomenal and the restaurants distinctive to types of food and as you made a reservation there was a personalized touch and never had to wait. Our favorite eating experience was the Ventantas a very trending theme and great food and the poolside buffet hosting different food everyday cooked right there! You could always eat at a restaurant if you wanted and Santiago was so friendly to us. We made friends with other guests on the beach and in the hot tubs after the beach which ranged in age from late 30-60 and were a lot like us. After dinner we would go to the Allegra Bar and listen to live bands and the Jamaican band had us all up and dancing! Our hostess Fanny was so attentive and moved chairs inside and dried them when it had rained on karoake night . The staff was always attentive to any needs we had and friendly to us. I do have to thank Gerardo and the staff that helped me locate my missing I-phone as they looked through bushes with flash lights all over and above to take care of a guest. Our last night dinner was at the Grill and Oscar was an exceptional waiter ,knowledgeable and attentive. Daily acitivites at no charge were always available which included Spanish lessons, how to make a martini, ping pong, horse shoes etc and spa experiences all available with staff engaging guests to have fun if they wanted.-no hassles if you said no.
So if you are looking for a place to have a great Mexican vacation this is the place with warm water and weather and a great beach with a lot of frills to go with it. And If you are looking for a good travel agent - use Kathy Moran with Classic Vacations is great!=Largay Travel Waterbury CT

Room Tip: All rooms are great but a 2nd floor or higher would give you an ocean view!

My husband and I stayed here at the end of January, early February. We had never been to Mexico before, and we loved the trip. We zero'd in on the Cancun area as it is a surprisingly easy flight from NYC. We love Hawaii, but wanted to try something closer.
We used a travel agent since we were leaving the USA. The hotel was recommended to us by the travel agent, and we were not disappointed. Our room was a superior ocean view king, and it was indeed ocean view - - just steps to the beach and two of the many pools and restaurants. We got the gorgeous views of the turquoise sea, and spent most of our 5 days and nights right there in the fantastic spot we had. If we'd had a longer trip we may have ventured out to the town or to excursions. But we were completely happy just there on the property and beach.
This was an all-inclusive package, something we'd never tried before and it worked out pretty well. There are six restaurants on the property, and we found out NOT from our travel agent, but from reading Trip Advisor, that reservations were needed before your arrival. Even though we had a couple of weeks notice about this, in many cases we could not get into the restaurants we wanted at the time we wanted. That's probably the only complaint we had regarding the experience. And certainly we never were without food or drink so really can't consider it a serious drawback.
We happened to be there during the Super Bowl game, and the hotel put out a very delicious game day spread of a wide variety of football food. Those of us who were interested in the game enjoyed the big screen setup, and after waiting for the English language feed to kick in, which never happened, we had just as good a time watching in Spanish. Certainly it created a lasting memory.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, with only a few language issues in the 5 days we were there. The trip was a needed respite from the tough winter here in New England. Just wish it could have been for a couple of weeks longer. We were delayed a day returning home due to yet another snowstorm at home, so enjoyed an extra afternoon by the pool, just enjoyed the sun and tried not to think about the expense of one more night!
