Reviewed 24 August 2012

Stayed here August10th to 17th. Upgraded to Hacienda Suites with our own pool. My girls really enjoyed this after a day at the beach.Beach as always is fabulous. Lots to do, volleyball, zumba and stretching on the beach, tennis and you can also use the bicycles to ride around the Playacar community.Food was very good and we enjoyed the a la cartes. The entertainment was very good especially the Michael Jackson show and the Decades show.We had a lot of fun at the Plaza shows with the Breakdancing wowing us.Parasailing was amazing. Our only complaint was we had a problem getting extra water. When we did find somebody we loaded up.Otherwise we had a great vacation and we will be back.

We have recently had a two-week stay here for our honeymoon. It was the first time we had visited Mexico and we were glad we chose Playacar as it is a safe, well kept community with a lovely plaza within walking distance (about 10 minutes) that is full of touristy shops but also had a chemist, starbucks and jewellery shops.

We stayed in an adults only section in the Riviera Whirlpool Junior Suite. The room was lovely with a HUGE bed, good storage, secure safe, seating area, balcony overlooking the jungle and a fab bathroom with a big jacuzzi bath. The room was cleaned daily and was never below what we expected, although they sometimes forgot to restock the minibar! Minibar is included within the All Inclusive and is filled with beer, various fizzy drinks and bottles of water. The room also has a hairdryer, iron and ironing board and a safe.

We used the pool in the adult only section as it was quieter and calmer than the other pools!! it has a swim up bar as well as a normal bar and there was food served during the day which differed from day to day. There are a few activities going on in the pool but if you like more of these than the family pools are for you. There are 3 big pools on the complex (including 1 adult one) but some of the rooms have smaller pools just for their use.

The food was just fantastic and well above what we expected to be honest! The main buffet had a huge variety including hot foods (rice, meat, potato, veg etc), breads, pastas (which they cook for you with the sauce, veg etc you like), fast food, grilled meats, cold meats and cheeses and salads. There is also a large range of desserts and fruit. The A-La Carte restaurants included Asiana (nice food but very rushed service which put off using it more than once), French (adult only, incredible food), Mexican (very yummy and lots of choice), Mediterranean ( mainly fish), Steak house and Brazillian. These have to be booked in advance and you get a designated amount of times you can use them depending on the length of your stay.

Our rooms were set right at the back of the hotel which meant most restaurants and the beach was a bit of a walk away (about 10 minutes) but this wasn't a problem for this as it meant we did some exercise and it also allowed us to be staying in a quieter area which was just what we wanted.

The staff were always friendly and whenever you met one they always greeted you with 'hola' and a smile.

Overall, a clean, modern and relaxing getaway which was everything we wanted and more. :D

Room Tip: The adult only rooms do not come with a sea view so if you want this you need to book a room elsewhe...

We stayed here in February and enjoyed ourselves overall. The time share people got us as soon as we checked in and took up the first hour and most of our first day, due to the relentlessness of our refusal. They made us miss our Sunwing meeting with our rep, telling us that it was no big deal and they would deal with it. This caused a headache later in our trip. But aside from that it is a very very nice resort. Although it was not our type and will not go back as a couple, due to the size(too big and busy) it would be a wonderful place for a family trip. There are many things for a family to do and is very kid friendly. The staff was very friendly, and most are English speaking. This made any issues very easy to resolve:) It was very clean and the food was very good. Especially the Asian style restaurant. Where the chef brought out our dishes and picked them up to ensure we enjoyed our meal. It was the most pleasant restaurant experience I've ever had!!! If you stay here you must eat there!!

we had junior suite in adults only section . The room was lovely and modern and oscar kept it lovely and clean, well stocked and the turn down service and towel animals were excellent. The main lobby, restaurants underneath and the family section the other side (where daughter and family stayed) with their own pools were clean , friendly and lovely. The staff serving in the pool bar and restaurants in this section were friendly and helpful. I'd like to say thank you to the guy who served drinks around the pool for all the different cocktails he provided!,.The Gardens were also lovely and well kept. The Entertainment staff really work hard and the theatre shows are the best I have seen on holiday and we could always get in. If this part of the hotel could then be on a lovely beach area with bars and restaurants then this would truly be a five star hotel.
However, I think it should only be three and a half because of the rest, past the meeting point it completely changes character. it becomes cramped, more "butlins like". the main buffet area is crowded and although the food there is good by the time you get around and back to your table it is cold. Atmosphere is not good in the whole bottom area as staff are not at all friendly (sometimes actually rude) drinks are served sloppily, all taste watered down from the bars here . Staff shut early as they can't be bothered to serve you half the time. You have to reserve tables in the restaurants and it is hard to get a table if you are a large party even though when you do go the places are half empty! they need a better system, The beach is awful so cramped the sunbeds are all on top of one another in rows. There is no nice place to sit and have a drink outside in evening or just look at the sea. everyone is forced into the main plaza where it is noisy and crowded. I wouldn't return and after spending the first week further down the coast at Dreams Tulum I preferred it there.

Room Tip: choose rooms in the family or adults section if you like it quietier and less crowded.

Sandos PlayaCar have been our family vacation spot for 4 years in a row for 2 weeks at the time. We are Royal Elite Members since our first trip. The resort is located in PlayaCar, an exclusive urban development on the area, home to only 5 star resorts and private houses; just a bicycle ride to the famous Playa del Carmen 5th Ave. The area looks great!
The Rooms:
We have stayed at all different kind of rooms here and have to say they all are very clean and kept on good conditions.
-The 2 BR ocean front apartments is all about location, location location. Excellent view! nice short walk to the beach everyday. If you open the balcony you can hear the ocean and enjoy the breeze. But this are the oldest rooms in this resort, the furniture and room decor are not bad but is not a 5 star room, to be honest. Also, we have to call maintenance for them to fix the A/C twice.
-The Junior suites located on the Adult only area: Are the newest rooms they have, the king size suites are spacious. Close to some of the A la carte restaurant but far from the beach, around 15 min. walk, the resort provide golf carts to take guests back and forth to the meeting point, then you walk to the beach.
-The Royal Elite Haciendas, are the best. Nice decor, spacious, the only rooms with WiFii, and also with private swimming pool and whirlpool.
-The Select Club Haciendas, are not 5 star either. They are small, old furniture and old decor.

THE BEACH is marvelous, white sandy beach, turquoise water, after all is the Caribbean!
In general the cleanliness and maintenance of the landscape in the resort is great.
The spa also is great!
THE KIDS CLUB and entertainment crew: The last 3 years my children didn't' want to leave the kids club, day and night they loved going there. But this year on May 2012, was not good at all. Some days the kids were not taken since they didn't have staff to take care of them, which jeopardized with our scuba excursion. And the days they were able to stay was boring, for a lack of activities and games from the crew side. I talked to the girl in charge and she told me I should complain with management so they could hire more girls.

SERVICE AND FOOD Since we have been here 4 years in a row, we have been able to see how the services and food have changed and not for better. For instance, the food at the buffet has become almost vegetarian. Lots of choices for vegetables but very few for protein (dishes including meat of any kind), aslo the first year they offered more seafood, not they don't is barely there one day a week or so. But since I am royal elite member I am able to enjoy a la carte restaurant every night, so I can't complain about the buffet.
A la Carte Restaurants: Sandos has a lot to offer, with 7 differents theme restaurants. The Brazilian (not my favorite), Asiana is good, The French is the best!, The Gaucho is good too. The mediterranean needs to improve the service is way too slow, we spent 2 hours here for dinner. The mexican is good. The Italian was not open in May.

ABOUT ROYAL ELITE: The service we received from them this year has make me wonder if we should go back next year. The have a miscommunication problem between them which causes a poor customer service. I took a group of 9 adults with me, I ordered a bottle of Chiva's Reagal to our room. After 2 days waiting and being told the bottle will be there, the bottle didn't arrived but a letter from management on the 4th day, explaining that the all inclusive does not included this, if we wanted to drink it we should go to the bar. If we moved 9 adults to the bar wouldn't be the same as having the bottle brought to our room? If not because I am Royal Elite member, and have spend 4 years in a row there, at least because of the number of customers I brought to you!, or at the best organizational stand point: At LEAST TO HONOR YOUR WORD, when they told me "yes, the bottle will be in your room tomorrow".

Also Royal Elite didn't handle right our payment process. It took us 4 days and several trips to the lobby to pay for our stay. They were charging us different than other times: Junior suite $70 on low season! (May), and $80 Royal Elite hacienda. When we signed up our contract the all inclusive rate was the same for all the rooms, now they are doing different. They didnt' convert our rate to mexican pesos as they used to do before, charging us these over-priced rooms.

IN GENERAL, THE RESORT AND AMENITIES ARE GREAT. THE ROYAL ELITE MANAGEMENT NEEDS TO IMPROVE AND TO BECOME MORE ORGANIZED AND FRIENDLY. THE SERVICE FROM WAITRESS, BARTENDERS AND STAFF IS PROFESSIONAL AND FRIENDLY. GOOD ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS. THE HOBBIE CATS ARE NEW, ZUMBA AT THE BEACH IS A+! -- KIDS CLUB NEED SOME REMODELING AND A/C. WE REALLY LIKE SANDOS PLAYACAR.

Room Tip: Royal Elite Haciendas are the best option for families.

It was a last minutes vacation so we only booked 2 nights through Expedia but ended up staying for more days because we had a great time. It was lucky for us that we stayed in room 7xxx - family section with small pool and a hottub just out side of the room.
Good:
The room was clean and furnished nicely with mordern style furniture and all fixtures are very new. The services are efficient. In less than 2 minutes a broken hairdryer was replace. The food was great but did not try the french nor the Asian food. Pool and sandy beach are excellent and entertainment staff were fun especially kids friendly. My old boy got a big bloody scratch while playing water sports and the hotel doctor provided first aid without charging us $$$$. The friday dinner and Saturday lunch at the beach were big plus!
Hope to improve:
It was not easy to find a chair at the pool near the beach after 10:00am so try to go there earlier.
There was a lady tried to promote the vacation club membership and that made me feel bad for her since we were totally not interested and also it was wast of time for us.
Will be back to Sandos!

Room Tip: Rooms starts with 7 was nice

We stayed here from 28 July to 11 august. Our party was 2 adults and 2 children of 15 & 13. We booked through Thomson and requested an interconnecting rooms. To make sure we had this we also emailed web relations and received a reply from Tomaso who was very polite. My husband also asked if we could be upgraded to gold wristbands as it was our 20th wedding anniversary also. I thought we would have automatically been allocated gold wristband as we had upgraded to junior jacuzzi suites. On arrival at the hotel we checked in but were given blue wristbands. I explained that we had been upgraded and he told us no this would be 22 dollars a day per person. Nit happy at this point when we had an email to confirm this but when we showed him the emIl via our blackberry he responded that he did not know this person called Tomaso. After the look on my face and me telling him this was not a very good start to my holiday he disappeared into the back office and came back with gold wristbands. Quite happily I took these and we proceeded to our rooms where the bellboy took our luggage for us. The rooms were
interconnecting Nd the beds as requested. Rooms 8223 & 8224.

Rooms
Cannot fault the rooms, they are cleaned daily but we left 3 dollars a day for the maid. Bedding clean and more than enough towels supplied. We only received a towel animal once but curtains were left with flowers in them.

Food
More than enough choices to choose from and cannot grumble about this at all. We ate in all the restaurants apart from the French restaurant but we had children so could not book. The brazilian and Mediterranean were the best and huge portions were served.

Location
Good location at the end of all the hotels with jungle and deserted beach next to the hotel. One day we walked to the local Starbucks and small shopping area just past the hotels. It only took 10 minutes to walk but you can walk in the shade. Early morning you see a lot of people out jogging.

Bar service
All the bars were different and some of the bartenders knew how to make cocktails but some of the time you got totally different drinks even when asking for the same thing. They could do with more bartenders on the sports bar as you had to wait a while some of the time but what's the hurry - your on holiday.

Check out
We checked out of one of our rooms at 12 but locked the door and kept the other room on until 2pm as we were not being collected until 4pm to head home. We took the express check out and just handed the keys and towel passes over at reception or to the bellboys. Whilst we waited the bellboys checked the weight of our cases and locked them away. We then resided in the bar and had a crepe from the crepe bar which are freshly made in front of you.

Nothing seems to be any trouble for any of the staff. The only problem we had was with Thomson not collecting us for a trip we had pre booked.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and would visit again if I were to have the choice. Great location and only wish I was back there.

Room Tip: If you have any special requests then contact web relations prior to your arrival.
