“Wonderful Trip!”
Reviewed 8 June 2014 via mobile

Check off on my bucket list--- have always wanted to take my grandsons to see the beautiful blue waters & white sands of the Caribbean. We spent 5 wonderful days at Sandos Playacar. They were amazed at the beautiful resort and the incredible beach. Their ages are 16 -20 and this resort had plenty of activities that kept them having fun all day & night. They enjoyed miniature golf, the game room, the eco trail, and the older ones the disco at night. The staff was friendly and will help in any way. And the food was plentiful --- I think they probably set a record for room service!
The rooms are good size, very clean. The only complaint is that the bed is very hard. We did bring pants as it is indicated that they are required for the night a la carte dinners. Most men did wear nice shorts & sandals, so you might keep that in mind. It is hot & humid & shorts are much more comfortable!
I would definitely recommend this resort.

This was a 10 year anniversary trip and the first time my wife and I have been on this type of vacation. We stayed in the adults only section and loved it. We loved having the laid back adults only pool to relax in; but if you want a bed by the pool, get their early. There are only 5 beds and are generally taken by about 7:30 and of course kept all day. We loved all the food and never had a problem finding something we liked. All of the staff were very friendly. Getting dinner reservations was very easy if you email Daniela in web relations.

Pros: Great room (in adults only section), Great staff, Good food, Beautiful beach.
Cons: The walk from the back sections to the beach isn't too bad, but bad enough you wont go back and forth often. The swim up bar in the adults only section closed at 6pm. The restaurants do not have AC (not sure if this is normal at other places).

Room Tip: If the 'select club' perks aren't too important, you may want to get a room in the beach...

We went to Sandos Playacar from May 2th to June 3rd, 2014. Our first time in Mexico was amazing. The beach is beautiful and food was great. Special thanks to Anuar, my favorite entertainer, from the casino night on Tuesday to aqua-form on a rainy Saturday (hats off to him that was very cool to do while raining, I am sure all guests were very happy about that). To Edgar, Sandy and 2 other ladies, thank you for giving the Zumba lessons. To Jesus, thanks for offering that awesome ATV tour, swimming at the lagoon, snorkeling in that wonderful caves and eating the tamales with hot sauce at the end, we had so much fun, was worth it. The food at the Steakhouse, French Gourmet and the Mexican Grill was really good, thanks to Rodolfo (I am not sure if that’s the right name) from the Steakhouse on Thursday night, Margarita from the French gourmet and Rodrigo from the Mexican grill, our last night at the resort. And also, we didn’t get the name of the host from the Mediterranean, please say thank you to her; she was the best host we met during our stay. Thanks to Sara from the Spa for the reflexoloy, it was very helpful for my right foot. And of course, I will not forget our maid who did a marvelous job in cleaning our room, thanks a lot; we stayed at the hacienda, rm 6103.

Hoping to see you again next year Will definitely recommend this resort.

My husband and I just returned from a week at the resort and had a wonderful experience. It's an older, very large resort with lots of animals and lush gardens surrounding it. The staff was very nice and gave great service, especially Seve our waiter at the Italian breakfast buffet; who kept the mimosas full! We thought the food was average but good and the Resturant selection was nice.
However our only complaint is the bed, hard as a rock ! We even tried to upgrade to a better room, but the front desk staff said all the beds are the same. This is unfortunate since you go on vacation to relax and cannot get comfortable enough to get a good nights sleep. The pools could use some maintenance. And we felt like there could have been more dancing or night club action. This was a nice place to spend a week relaxing in the hammocks and lounging by the pool or under the palm trees on the beach.

It's a big resort and a perfectly fine all-inclusive resort. Staff were friendly & helpful. We were here staying with friends for a destination wedding. The adults section & pool was great- no screaming/running/crying children. Nice walk up/swim up pool bar, friendly staff who would make up specialty drinks using local liquors (Xtabentun) if you asked. We had the gold bands & could go into the premium clubs where liquors of 'higher quality' (not watered down???) were used in the drinks. The buffet restaurants had good selections &, in my, & some of our companions experiences, better tasting food. An example: at the French restaurant, the foods were hit or miss (mostly miss): my lobster bisque was just cream of tomato soup- no other taste. One member of our party said his had a slight lobster taste, another said hers had a slight salmon taste- none had any chunks of lobster. It seems as though they went to a lot of trouble serving what I would call 'froo- froo' foods- things like "duck mousse on a half grape served on a spoon with a looped handle". The 'filet mignon' was awful- tough- I sent mine back while another person struggled to cut through hers. My wife's crepe suzette was really just a taco- the alcohol didn't burn off; my creme brulee was vanilla pudding with a carmelized sugar crust- not really tasting like a real creme brulee. The 'Specialty" restaurants required reservations- one could not just walk in, and yet these restaurants were mostly empty of diners (the one exception being the Asian restaurant).
Our room was large (Junior Suite), but there were some engineering problems with it. The shower area just had a tiny lip to keep the water in the shower area- even with a towel there to try to block it, the water still ran out of the shower into the hall. Our thermostat had a setting dial, from 55 to 95 degrees, but the dial did nothing- the temp was always the same- AC could be set for: High, Med, Off, or Lo. To bring up the temp, one had to open up the sliding door to the outside. The overhead fan was either on or off. Others in our party said their thermostats had buttons that worked, or different types of thermostats. It really didn't matter because we were mostly outside or off exploring, but it was chilly by morning & we ended up using an extra blanket after a storm passed by on several days. The jacuzzi was very nice. The bathroom had a pair of shutters that could be opened so one could see into the bedroom & visa versa- weird... I don't care to look into the bathroom to see someone do his/her business... weird.
The shuttle service was great, with vans running every few minutes to shuttle people from the lobby to the 'meeting point'.
It seems a function of the concierge was to try to get people into their version of a time share/vacation club/whatever you wish to call it. I'm uninterested in time shares so we passed up the ability to obtain a 'black band'.
The spa was great- we both had a hot stone massage- wonderful!!!
A great point is that the resort takes in stray & feral cats, has them neutered, gives them medical care, feeds & shelters them & lets them live out their lives in this setting. Kudos to Sandos for caring for these creatures!

We made our annual trip to Sandos Playacar on Saturday May 24th. When we arrived, the check-in was the fastest we had EVER encountered! Thank you Samira! A drink was made for us while we gave them the information and we were in and out in less than 5 minutes. Off to our room we went. Victor drove the cart to the area where we stayed, took all our luggage up to our room, and was very friendly.

My birthday was the last week before we got here and they had balloons and a "birthday cake" made out of towels waiting for us - with rose petals on it. (see pics). Our maid was Melani and she was great! Had different animals for us out of towels and the bed covering was done in designs etc. Always a pleasure to come to the room to see what was waiting for us next.

We had a little trouble with the A/C but they called a maintenance person and he was out quickly and also fixed our little refrigerator which wasn't cooling. The next day the A/C didn't work again so they got someone out again and this time it was fixed.

We are Royal Elite members so we spent a LOT of time at the members-only pool and I must say that Maribel Vazquez took VERY good care of us each and every day. The day she was off, Vanessa took VERY good care of us. Very friendly people, always willing to make sure you weren't in need of ANYTHING. We like that kind of attention. They were fabulous.

The restaurants were great. We made reservations for a few of them, and ate at the banquets the other nights. I love the fish at the banquet and even asked what kind it was. Seems that the final conclusion is: Small Grouper. I will definitely be looking for some in Houston to grill now that we are home.

The weather was perfect each and every day. We might have gotten a dozen rain drops one day but that was it. SO thankful we had beautiful weather to enjoy while we were there.

We rent a car each time so we can come and go as we please and we went to 5th Avenue to do some shopping etc. It's SO close to the resort that we love going a couple of times while we are there.

All I can say is we can't wait to get back. We ran into Giovanna one day and she remembered us from last year. We aren't just a number at Sandos! That's always a plus. She said if we needed anything that we could go to Guest Services and ask for her.

Anyway - I highly recommend you stay here. We had Superior Ocean View rooms (looking right on the beach) and the views were spectacular. Next time we may request 4th floor, but the 3rd floor was still gorgeous. If you stay in the Adults Only section, there is a short walk to the beach or you can catch a ride on the many golf carts that can pick you up and drive you. It's kind of nice to walk off some of those calories though.

We'll be back!
Terri and Larry Way
