I still love this hotel. Excellent area right on 5th ave.

Of all the people on the plane, we were the ONLY couple that got dropped off at this hotel. I would of been freaking if it was our first trip there but we knew what we were getting in for. We asked for our same room we had last January and we got it......bonus!! It was perfect as wireless is in reception area so we just would go out onto the patio and log on. I think we were the only english (canadian) people there! Serious!

I would not say this is a family resort as there is no entertainment and the pool is very small (never used it). It is a walk to the beach but we dont mind. Beach is beautiful, little crowded at times but oh well. I do wish they would have some kind of snacks on beach. Serving alcohol and no food isnt good. Most all inclusives have something at beach. We ordered from Kool (associated resort right beside beach club area), expensive. Cheese quesidia was 80 pesos and order of fries was 55 pesos. Not much food at all. That i would really like them to improve on, food at beach. Burgers, hotdogs, fries, salsa with nachos etc...
At the common restraunt, it was not unusual to not have a fork! We ate some meals with spoons. Not a big deal, just an inconvenience. That was when it was real busy. I would like to see more salads at the buffet. I do not eat meat and the one and only salad they would put out, it would have ham or chicken in it. Green salads and veggies are good to have. Not everyone wants a hot lunch/dinner.

If you want to book an excursion, see MARCO in the reception area. We booked with him and he is great. Give him a try. Nice guy to talk too if you need info as well.

Overall if you want a quiet hotel (not resort) with nice courtyard and your not looking to be entertained......try it. Not a 5* so dont expect it. And last dont expect a soft bed. EVERYONE in Mexico has hard beds, that is just the way it is so stay home if you want a soft bed or dont complain. Take Mexico for what it has to offer you...especially the Mayan Riviera.

I have stayed at Eltoukan 3 times now . And will be there again on Feb 7th, 2009 one week all inclusive. I do agree with others , that a small fridge would be ideal in the standard room .
As far as the food , i've had better , but so many good restaurants in Playa that you can eat cheap and much better.the beach club should be closer to the hotel . The beer is not very good ( the big brown bottles ) not much choice in beers. I have never seen a Beach club without any food . At least a BBQ, for hot dogs or fries . Just a very small menu would be better than nothing. the rooms are ok , need renovations , but I thought it was clean enough . Never had facecloths, but ok i'll bring mine this time . sitting in front of 5th Ave, sipping a nice coffee or a cocktail would be nice too , afterall we are guests too . I feel that they have strong limitations and somewhat at times felt like an outsider in our hotel .

cheers !!! See you soon

We stayed at the El Tukan Condotel for 7 nights over Xmas break in 2008-2009. It wasn't our choice, we had prepaid a room at the Illusion Hotel, who overbooked and handed us over to El Tukan.

Location: El Tukan is one of the larger Playa hotels, situated on 5th Ave, and taking up almost a whole square block. It is wonderfully quiet, though conveniently close to restaurants and bars.

The beach: The sea is 2 blocks away; although that part of the shore is taken up by the marina. The actual beach is a 10-25 minute walk away, depending on how far you're willing to walk to avoid the crowds. The hotel reportedly provides a shuttle service to their beach club several times a day.

The room: Basic, clean accommodation with tile floors (nice on account of the sand), shower, free beach towels, locked safe available for 1USD/day extra charge, and a nice porch with a couple of chairs. Get some mosquito repellent! No room phone. Most items are well worn, but the service staff is fast and courteous. To give you an idea, some towels are frayed, but the maids are ga-ga creative with the towel displays (swan, kissing swans, hearts, water-lily and even a baby shape on New Year's Eve).

The food: We like to sample diverse, local food, and we'd rather pay more and eat out, than try an all-inclusive program. Nevertheless, the "reservation hand-over" from Illusion threw in free breakfast buffets which were OK (scrambled eggs, omelettes to order, fried plantaines, fresh fruit, waffles etc), though repetitious to tears after a few days, as expected.

The crowd: El Tukan seems to be popular with several European travel agencies, hence an international, reasonably well-behaved, beach-bound crowd. On the other hand, we were thrilled to see many Latin Americans guests at the breakfast tables.

Overall, not a bad place.
