I took my three young teens here for Spring Break after hitting an all-incusive for a few days, and we are so glad we found The Hotel Paamul! At first, the kids were skeptical of the "hippies" living in designer trailers. Then, they saw the friendly security gents, and the rooms (#7 & #8) with spectacular views, and they settled in beautifully. Having moderate Spanish skills was helpful, and we were able to grab a taxi to Tulum and Xel-Ha for a wonderful excursion.
The restaurant grilled up a mean steak and lots of wonderful Mexican fare, and we all found many things to try while visiting for three days. The staff is very kind and willing to help with choices.
If you desire spending time in a spacious, clean air conditioned room, with a balcony which gives you views for miles, this is the place for you. It is mellow and you feel free as a bird, not confined as in the larger hotels. I have traveled over one million miles, and I have yet to stay so close to a pristine beach. Unforgettable!

Room Tip: To get the view that goes on for miles, try #7 or #8!!

I would say the former name, "Cabana Paamul", is probably a more apt description than calling it a hotel. The rooms are open air with individual ac units. Everything is tile--even the bed is elevated on a ceramic/terra cotta pedestal--because when it rains water ends up everywhere, but its no big deal (just don't leave anything on the floor), the staff comes around with a squeege and a mop. The staff, by the way, are all very friendly, but a minimal knowledge of spanish will definitely help to be able to communicate. In terms of other ammenities, there's cable tv, wi-fi access, and a blow dryer in the bathroom, but that's about it, no phones in the room, not even an alarm clock. You don't stay here for the ammenities, you stay here because it is an adorable, well-maintained room, with a balcony facing the beach, so close to the water you could throw something off your balcony and get it into the Gulf of Mexico. You stay here for the clean (not the case in downtown Playa), private beach that looks like a Corona ad. You stay here because you feel like you've left the real world, but a 20min car ride takes you into downtown Playa del Carmen where you can shop, eat, and barhop to your heart's content. (If you want to take the collectivo, you literally walk about a half-mile on the private road back up to the highway and stand on the side of the highway until one comes by, they will know to stop for you. Its 25pesos/person. I would recommend planning on taking a taxi back though if you come back at night, you're not going to want to make the walk after dark; a taxi is about 200pesos.) I will definitely try to come back and stay here again.

Paamul has outstanding service and staff. The rooms are spacious and it's conveniently located on Highway 307, south of Playa del Carmen and north of Tulum, making it a great base of operations for the Mayan Riviera area. They have a very good restaurant with delicious offerings and a swimming pool, in addition to a beautiful beach.

Room Tip: Lower level suites walk out to the beach.

We stayed in Paamul for 5 nights and enjoyed all of it. In our opinion, its biggest draw is that it is a quiet place a few feet from the shore. This is not a fancy resort with lots of activities and people. But, it was perfect for what we were looking for: sitting in our porch 10 feet from the water, enjoying the ocean breeze, and reading a book. The family of iguanas that live under the hotel provide the most action as they walk back and forth on the beach. We stayed in room #12 on the lower floor, so we could walk out the sliding glass doors and onto the beach. The room is big, has 2 queen sized beds, good A/C, good (free) WiFi, a good sized bathroom (with lots of hot water), and a kitchenette (refrigerator, sink, microwave). It has a TV, but can't say we watched anything.

We recommend renting a car, as it makes it easier to get to places in the area (and it's very easy to drive - you can either go north or south on the road). We drove to Playa del Carmen for dinner a couple of nights (15 minute drive). We drove to Tulum one morning (25 minute drive). We drove to Puerto Morelos for dinner (30 minute drive) and found a lovely hidden gem of a town. We drove to Cancun one day since we had never been there (about one hour) - but, yuck, no need to do that, nothing there except for huge resorts and golf courses.

It's all about expectations - if you are looking for a luxurious resort, this is not it. But, if you are looking for a place to truly relax, that is clean, with exceptional service, then this is it!

Room Tip: We liked the ground floor room since you could walk out of your room and right onto the beach.

Sometimes paradise can be easily defined. In Paamul's case, pristine waters and serene views are not the only factors at play. Never have I seen a resort in such close proximity to the curved stretch of lucid Caribbean waters it harbors. I have stayed in hotels and resorts circa Cancun for the last five years, have traveled all around the Mediterranean and Black sea coasts, and until I arrived at the facade of Paamul, have never experienced such fusion of natural preservation, privacy, and tranquility. Zig-zagging coral reefs encompass naturally conspired swimming areas awaiting you as soon as your toes hit the water.
When I opened the door of Paamul's master suite, I was taken aback by the breathtaking panorama and how spacious the rooms are. As I thought to myself that it doesn't get any better than this, I found a complimentary bottle of red wine with a thoughtful note from Paamul. A modest, International village in itself, Paamul takes care of its grateful inhabitants with sheer care, incredible food, huge rooms, wide balconies with incredible beach views, wide flat screen television, tight security, and snorkeling activities right outside your door. The staff is always ready to help, providing quality room service with proper maintenance of the rooms, keeping them extra clean on a daily basis. It's hard not to become friends with everybody here as people are always smiling.
With affordable on property taxi services and shuttle bus options right outside its gates, one has hundreds of options for nearby daily adventures. Its strategic location permits a swift trip to practically any coastal Yucatan destination. My personal favorites were Akumal (snorkeling with sea turtles at a cheap price), Tulum (snorkling there as well), Playa Del Carmen, Coba, Xel Ha, and dozens more, most of which are located less than 15-20 minutes away. I stayed here with my girlfriend 4 months ago and am already coming back next month as a result of how we were treated. Paamul is love, I wish you all an amazing trip!

It's a really great place. Everything was me was perfect. Wonderful view just from my bed, beach, restaurant- very good fresh orange juices. Also the swimming pool was really nice. Lot of security guys so it was safe. I loved that place and hope i will go there one day. The beach was mostly rocky, but for me it wasn't problem- i prefer pool. But there was also a place without rock and u could go there without any problems. Recommend!!!

It was a lot better than I expected. The hotel and the cabanas are located on a piece of secluded beach. Some of the suites have a porch a few feet away from the water. The rooms are spacious and updated. Ours had a fridge, coffee maker, microwave and kitchen sink. Wifi is available at no cost. It is a great place for a romantic get away.
The not so good are the restaurant (a little bit pricey), the beach has rocks, secluded access (preferably you need a car).
