La Rana Cansada
Ranked #153 of 215 Hotels in Playa del Carmen
Reviewed 17 January 2010

Since I am often traveling solo and always afraid to get stuck in a place where it is only couples or very family oriented I am always looking for a place where it is easy to meet people. And La Rana Cansada makes it impossible not to.
It may not be the best hotel when it comes to comfort (but still very nice rooms) but a friendlier atmosphere you have to look for. This is the place where people go to even if they don't stay at the hotel. It is also the place where you meet people who actually lives in Playa Del Carmen.

I had just return from La Rana Cansada, it looked nice after reading the comments in here, but it was something different when I arrived.

Here are some material facts instead of those “Friendly smiling people” type, frequently used.

About the property...
1.No architecture, it is a small yard surrounded by rooms, dark and hot with bad ventilation.
2.There is no division between the bar and rooms but the yard, you can hear the voices when you are sleeping as you were in the bar.

About the rooms...
1.Dark with poor ventilation. The bathrooms have not a single window, they become into a sauna every time you need to close the door.
2.Small with bad distribution, there is no place to put a medium size bag on the floor. The hammock is in the middle of the room, making near to impossible to cross over the place.
3.The beds are as you can see in their pictures, hard as rocks.
4.The room with no A/C is as hot as a convection oven, there is no air circulation even keeping the door opened. One small window with no curtains near to the ceiling allows the Sun to come over your bed in the morning directly to your face.
5.The door of the next room was always opened blocking ours since when the door of one room is opened the other must be closed. Even pushing such door it always returned.
6.There was always a big black dog at the entrance of the room blocking the way to walk around.
7.There are not smokers / non smokers spaces, all the smog gets concentrated.
8.No security boxes, TV, phone nor Internet in rooms.

About the maintenance...
1.No hot water in the shower.
2.The toilet does not work properly.

About the management.
1.It was a problem to make the reservation with Jez (The manager) by e-mail, it must be done by phone.
2.I asked about how hot were the rooms and Jez said they were fine.
2.The check in was bad recorded, when the check out was made (18hrs, after I arrived) there was as if I stayed for one week.
3.When reserving, the rate includes taxes to be paid with credit card, but there you have to pay 12% extra of taxes for invoicing and 6% for credit card.

There are a lot of hotels as cheap as La Rana Cansada with better facilities, location and friendly staff, frequently more professional. Please review some pictures in Internet before to make the same mistake than I, it does not matter what other people say, what you see in there is what you will get as my review describes.

You may think you have to deal with bad service when you are paying a low rate, but this is not the case in Playa del Carmen since it is not any more a small fishermen village located in the middle of the jungle.

I love to travel to Playa. Off the beach hotels provide less expense, therefore more trips to Playa. I recently stayed at La Rana Cansada and what a pleasant surprise. From the manager Jorge, Thed one of the owner's and especially the great bar staff, this is a part of the Playa experience that makes the stay fun! Friendly courteous people who even let you know when the band will be playing in case you are concerned about noise. I definitely will stay at this hotel again, the price is right, the staff is great and you leave feeling good.

This place is completely wonderful. My fiancee and I stayed at La Rana Cansada over Christmas this year (we love Playa dearly) and what better place than La Rana. With a bar to die for, 4 minutes from all the best restaurants & clubs, 3 minutes from the beach - in the centre of town right where you want to be... Our room was very pretty and bed very comfortable. We stayed at Blue Parrott Hotel a week before (terrible) and paid 3 times the price, so we were much relieved to find La Rana. The bar has an exceptional reputation and atmosphere, with wonderful bar staff (and hotel manager) and great wines. Music all day, free wireless in the rooms, hammocks, great guest kitchen, extremely cosy. We couldn't have asked for more. Thank you Pia & Ted, we love you. Val & Martha forever xxx

Jez was so helpful and friendly. My friend and I came with an open iteniary and Jez was so helpful on suggestions for day trips as well as great places to eat. The room was so cute with the thached roof. It was exactly what i needed, a place to rest and shower. I went to Walmart and bought food to cook, it was nice to have access to a kichenett. Loved the bar downstaires was full of locals and expats as well as people staying in the hotel. It was central to everything, and had everything I could ask for. I would recomend this hotel to all my friends and family. It was no frills but very comfortable. I could not ask for anything more but to wake up and open the door to blooming hybiscus flowers in the courtyard.

as another reviewer said-- it aint the Ritz, but frankly i have stayed at the Ritz and this place beats it hands down for service and smiles. The Rana is a simple hotel-- a courtyard surrounded by room on the ground level and some rooms upstairs. I stayed there this xmas and new years. The staff were all great. Jez, who manages the place for owners Pia and Ted was helpful, always around when you needed him and had great recommendations for food etc. The attached bar was an excellent place (recently enlarged) it is the home of an international gang of locals who run many of the best activities in the area so you can drink a beer whilst booking a dive or an ATV adventure.

what you need to know-- there are no tvs, no phones in the rooms, no business centres and no internet access (though they may have wireless). Now if that is what you are looking for go to one of the big impersonal hotels. They do have AC (some reviewers may have been there before it was in), a lovely outside kitchen where you can cook if you want to, and hammocks inside the rooms and outside (you get beds too!), 24 hours someone is looking after things so if you get locked out (whoops, yes i did) someone wll let you in

Ted and Pia have been there many years and are great to chat to. Their friend runs Babes across the road which is a great Thai restaurant and other friends run the best coffee bars etc in town. They threw a great party for xmas and another crazy one for new years and we were welcome at both.

Trying to think of any gripes but i can't think of much. Compared to much of mexico, playa is pricey and Rana reflects this. You are not on the beach like many hotels but you are only a minute away. Oh-- yes, i have a gripe. The bar staff make the worst Margaritas in the whole of Mexico. Except Jorge. But their beers are cold and they were a great laugh.

My wife and I stayed at the Rana Cansada towards the end of our honeymoon. We thought the place was great!

The rooms were all different and very cosy, take a look around before deciding. The downstairs bar was a lot of fun with lots of drinks (try the limonada!) and interesting patrons.
The location was great, we walked to the beach (100m) and had drinks by the beach. It is right next to 5th Av so you can stroll there for breakfast in the moring or or shopping during the evening.

We had a great time staying at Rana Cansada and will definitely stay there next time we come to Playa.

Cheers,
Runar & Ullie
