We traveled to Playa Del Carmen for a cousins wedding at Mahekal and had an amazing time! The resort is right at the beach which was fabulous and so convenient. The staff was very helpful and the food delicious! My husband and I can't wait to go back!

We brought our 2 kids (9&5) to Mahekal for a family wedding. It was a "magical" experience all around. The food is delicious, the staff is wonderful, and the beach, well, it's just plain paradise. I loved the fact there were no phones/tvs. One reviewer mentioned brooms in the rooms, which I think is a brilliant idea. Even though they have an outside spigot to rinse your feet, it can still get pretty sandy inside. We stayed right on the beach and the most amazing experience was swaying in the constant beach breeze in a hammock that hung from our terrace looking out at the beach and ocean. My only issue was our particular unit's a/c didn't work that great, and it got HOT. That said, It wasn't bad enough to change rooms, and during the day, the breeze is great. Those birds do get you up early, but I figured it was the best way to enjoy the beach before it got to be sweltering hot. Another highlight for us: Mexican fiesta night. Delicious buffet dinner and Mariachi band. Would not hesitate to return or recommend this property. It's rustic, charming and chill here, if you are looking for air conditioning everywhere, or fancy upscale accommodations, this place is not for you. The 24 hour beach security is excellent-- but the resort's beach is shared with public access. For us, this enhanced our experience, as my son befriended a local boy with whom we will keep in touch via email! We look forward to our next trip to Mahekal...

Room Tip: Stay right on the beach!

We wanted a place to relax and do nothing but sit on the beach, go to the pool, drink a few drinks and have no set schedule. This was exactly what we were looking for. We want to give a shout out to Regilio our waiter. Rooms were excellent and clean; we stayed in the garden section. Food was good, fish was excellent. La Cueva del Chango is a great place to eat and is right up the street. We recommend this for lunch. Beach was great and not crowded. We plan on coming back soon.

Room Tip: keep an eye out for early summer rate drops.

We LOVED LOVED this resort. This is my 2nd time to Playa and my first time to Mahekal

Suggestions first..IF and I say IF I had to nit pick... a broom in the room would have been nice. Although the sand is part of experience and the housekeeping staff kept our room immaculate... at night after a hard day at the beach it would be nice to sweep a little sand out of the room and patio.

We had a NEWborn ..that's right about 4 mo old baby in the room next to us and the "mother of the year" left her kid in the room with a baby monitor while she was at the bar...WOW! But, that's not the hotel staffs fault. As when we complained about the noise from a new born crying its eyes out they happily moved us to another comparable room. Thanks staff!

Although, there were a few guests that complained about noise from a wedding party we didn't hear a peep. The wedding party was annoying at the pool as there seemed to belong in Cancun (college kids, from Brooklyn, NY..ick!)

The bartending staff didn't get our orders right all the time..However, we don't speak Spanish so that's not their fault (as we are in Mexico..so we didn't expect them to speak English).

Now the good!!!!.... Those complaining of no phone and TV should shove off to a MEGA resort. The no TV and phone was relaxing and tranquil.

The hammocks and ceiling fans on the patio OH YEA!! NICE!!
The food was great and we are picky eaters. The wait staff really nice...(Don't forget to ask for your check..as it's rude in Mexico for them to bring it to you..it's like them saying "we are done with being hospitable..get out") It's up to you to decide when you want to leave. BBQ and seafood buffet night was awesome...We live in San Diego so Mexican fiesta night with Mariachis was not our thing.

Xel-ha and Coba are great excursions and Boli (the concierge) is not only helpful but, honest. He listens to what you want. He will sell you want you want even if it's not the most expensive; a very nice thing to have in a concierge.

If you are not an earlier riser Mahekal may not be for you. The beautiful jungle birds and wildlife will wake you every morning at 5AM. But, we thought it was a great part of the experience! Watch for the Coti's as they can be vicious if felt threatened.

We also made friends with a stray cat who was adorable and slept on our patio every night. If you run into this cat, don't be afraid she is a sweetie and the bodega on 5th sells cat food for 2 dollars. She'll chill with you when you nap in your hammock.

Sunblock/Bug spray combo is a must for the beach. Beds are comfy, grounds are immaculate, the spa staff rocks (I gave a 100% tip to my massage therapist.) The beach is gorgeous; the beach lounge chairs comfy, drinks are reasonably priced (don’t forget to tip this includes you!!! You cheap Europeans!!!)… I could rave and rave!!!
All in all; this place is heaven! We will be back and sooner than we planned... We LOVE Mahekal!!!

Room Tip: Beach Bungalows

The Mahekal, is located in the Playa del Carmen hotel area but outside all the noisy and night life action which makes it ideal for a relaxing trip , but still gives you access to Playa restaurant and night life in a walking distance (5 min).

The hotel has nice facilities ideal for relaxing in a couple or family vacation due it´s a kids frendly location that in Playa is hard to find, the rooms ara little houses very typical of the region with all the ameneties. The only thing is that theres no TV o phone but is part of the concept, and WiFi is available in the Club house area and in one of the pools.

The food is very nice, and you have brekfast and lunch or dinner in your rate, that based on the prices of restaurants in the zone it makes this a good deal, and the quality and variaty is very nice. Breakfast and dinner are buffet and lunch base on a wide menu.

The beach is not crowed except for sunday that can be a little bit by locals but still not asr crowed like the ones in the central hotel area.

Staff is very frendly and will assure a nice vacation

Room Tip: Good location on every room

Even though we were travelling with 3 kids 9 and younger, we still felt like we were taken away to a quiet resort away from it all. The staff was wonderfully friendly and especially sweet with the kids. The pool were perfect for kids. We easily went from meals to beach to pool to bar and back again. I always thought it was funny that the kids were asking to go to the bar, just because there were swings and pingpong and pool to entertain us all. There was always a wonderful variety of food deliciously prepared. It was a wonderful experience.

My husband and I have been traveling to the Yucatan for over 20 years, and staying at Mahekal (formerly Shangri-La Caribe) almost as many. We chose it over all of the other resort in the ever expanding "Riviera Maya" because it embodies the spirit and beauty of the Yucatan and the Caribbean rather than re-creating just another mega resort that could be anywhere in the world.

We chose it initially for the bungalow-on-the-beach experience, and fell in love with the people who work at Mahekal (many are the same two decades later). We love the low-key lifestyle we live at Mahekal, mostly barefoot, grabbing a beer or snack when we need one, breakfasting on authentic Mexican egg dishes like Huevos Motulenos, devouring fresh, simply grilled fish for lunch.

New owners took over in 2008. We'd heard the place was getting torn down, and it broke our hearts. What we didn't know until the year was that the economic crash of recent years actually SAVED Mahekal from distinction. Funding and resources dried up, so the new owners re-invested in the resort instead, with wonderful results. The employees all stayed! When there were no guests at the resort, when the economy and swine flu and then trumped up reports of violence in Mexico scared tourists away, the employees never lost one day of work. They helped fix the place up instead, gardening, painting, whatever needed to be done. The guests are back now, and it is an even happier place than it used to be, because everyone knows what could have been lost. Visiting now is even sweeter than before.

Some rooms have been remodeled in a more modern Mexican motif. I miss the old Mexican tiles, but I love the comfortable beds, the nice linens, the thoughtful touches like reading lights over the bed, extra storage capacity, rain showers, and beautiful artistic touches.

The evening restaurant has stepped up its quality and the food is consistently great. The menu hasn't changed so much (lots of terrific regional fare mixed with just enough European/American dishes to satisfy those who need a little comfort from home while traveling) but the preparation, the flavors, the freshness, all much improved.

We noticed extra security on hand, but never felt we needed it. Still, for some wary travelers, be assured: they've got your back.

The town of Playa del Carmen continues to replicate up on itself, now spreading north even of Mahekal, but when you're on this little oasis of a resort, you'd never know it. All ou see are sand and turquoise sea, gorgeous flora, and friendly faces.
