over the last 15 years we have spent 12 XMAS holidays in paradise located in Playa Del Carmen. It is a queit destination without tvs and phones in the room - breakfast and dinner are included however its a short walk to town to work up an appetite or find a dining option. The hotel is a lovely slice of beach at the quiet end of the hotel strip - with low density non wristband wearing beach goers - not for everyone however we keep returning almost every year to our holiday family.

Room Tip: Stay on the Playa side

We had wonderful relaxing break after a hectic up every morning tour. The hotel was simple quiet with out hut right on the beach beautiful. Many hours spent in the hammocks on our veranda reading to the sound of the waves and the happy people on the beach. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Resort maintains its low key yet beautiful setting, great food, warm friendly staff. For a week of relaxation it cannot be beat.

Room Tip: Beachfront bungalow on caribe side is most preferred 2C 3C 5C

My husband and I just returned from 2 weeks at Mahekal Beach Resort for our 25th year of paradise. We alway go in February and meet some friends that we had met over the years. We have found that not only have we met wonderful people from around the world but we feel that the staff have become our friends too. One cannot beat the friendliness of the staff and we believe that is because it is not a hugh resort. It is small, very clean and relaxing. The fact that there are no televisions or phones in the rooms gives us the opportunity to meet new people and visit with old friends.

The food this year was exceptionally good and the new chef and menu has made a difference.

Due to the growth of Playa del Carmen it is accessible to walk to town and other places for lunch or dinner.

My husband and I do not like all-inclusive mega-resorts. Thus, Mahekal was a perfect choice for us. The grounds and the beach are lovely. We enjoyed spending our days under one of the many palapas which are solely for Mahekal guests. Our room could have used a little love, but it was extremely clean and we only slept there anyway. We had breakfast and lunch at the resort each day and ate dinner in town. The best lunch options are the sandwiches, in my opinion. We booked our transportation through the hotel and it was seamless and worth it. The location is perfect. We loved being able to walk through town in the evening, stopping at various places for a drink or two. It had been ten years since our last trip to Playa and the city is unrecognizable from what it looked like a decade ago. I'm not saying that is bad thing, it just is crazy how this once small little strip has grown into a land of Starbucks and Haagen Dazs.

One plea from me to you: Please don't have your photo taken with the baby animals they have on display on 5th Ave. I did a lot of research upon my return because the men trying to get you to pay to have your photo taken with the baby lion said that the little guy was "on loan" from the Mexico City Zoo and they had the "certificates" to prove it. NOT TRUE. It is a total sham and these animals shouldn't be on display just to make money for a few jerks.
