“Seven days of Serene Beauty”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

Friends of ours recommended this place (after coming here the past 8 years), so we couldn't resist ... especially after the winter we're having. We flew direct to Cancun from Detroit with our friends, and Mahekal had a van pick us up (no additional charge).
The drive took ~45 minutes and we were so happy to see our ocean view room. Our friends stayed in a penthouse (which means third floor with incredible views). Our room had just been renovated and was beautiful.
The package includes 2 meals a day. The grounds are pristine, the personnel were not only professional, but personable and friendly. The resort is family friendly and has all the amenities anyone would want. Note that pictures do not do justice to the beauty of their grounds and beach.

Room Tip: know what you want. Ocean views are great but some ocean views are second and third floors. If sta...

I was so looking forward to staying at Mahekal, the pics look amazing. But I'm afraid that the overall experience didn't meet my expectations. When we first arrived, foolishly choosing to do an overnight flight from the US, so we were so tired our eyes were almost hanging out of our heads. After asking 4 times our room was finally ready - at 4, not 3.00 and we noticed that there was a smell of what we though was sewerage throughout the property that hung around. Someone later told us that the smell was rotting seaweed which I was dubious about at the time... I noticed the same smell coming from a drain on the road, and I later concluded that as it indeed smelled like it was coming from the sea that they must pump waste out to see, but of course that's just my guess. Fact is it smells bad. Not all the time, but some of the time, and that's not the impression you get from looking at the lovely photos. I noticed it was absent from other beach fronts, and we couldn't smell anything when we went diving off Cozumel.

We stayed in a Palapa Garden View room. Very basic indeed, and quite strange room layout. Loved the hammocks on the veranda. Lack of WiFi was such a killer. Ok, so I apparently am hopelessly addicted, and that's my deal, but it would be nice to have the option. The only WiFi is at reception, so tragically I hung out there a bit. Even so, when there were about 10 people accessing WiFi at the same time you couldn't even get on. I know the idea is to have a holiday, but options would be good!

I didn't realise that the both breakfast and dinner was included when I booked - it probably mentioned it, but I didn't really register. If I had the option, I'd rather not have dinner included. We had a few lunches on the beach which was very nice, but the best meal I had all week was at Tacos de Victor just up the road - best Tacos I've ever eaten! And very cheap. Having meals included may be convenient if you're lazy or wrangling a large bunch of people, but it stops you from experiencing the local delights.

The location is pretty good if you want to get some peace and quiet. It was close enough to 5th Ave to be able to walk there easily, but with a far more relaxing vibe.

The best thing we did was book a taxi driver for a whole day and go to Ek Balam, then on to two of the most amazing experiences at two different Cenote's thanks to a local mentioning something to the driver. Best part of the trip!

For the price we paid for accommodation, if I went back I would book elsewhere. I don't think it's good value.

Room Tip: If you can afford the absolute beach front rooms, they looked lovely. It may give you a different im...

Dear Guest, thank you for your feedback.

We do understand that waiting for an extra hour to receive your room must have been a frustration, so please accept our apologies for that.
The smell that our visitors sometimes experience is caused by the decomposed vegetation in the mangroves around the area. We are working with a company to treat the organic material and are optimistic we can significantly reduce or hopefully eliminate it.
We are sorry to hear that the wifi connection was not fast enough at the time you wanted to connect. We are also in the process of fixing this to secure broader coverage and better speed.
It is my pleasure to see that you had a chance to visit some of the most beautiful Mexican sights and you tried several local dishes. Let me add here, that we offer a wide choice of local egg meals at breakfast time and a good variety of delicious tacos, flautas, arrachera and ceviche in our Aventura restaurant. I hope that you may visit us again for the natural beauty around, the delicious food and friendly service we provide for 30 years in Playa del Carmen.
Kind regards,

Emilio Palazuelos - General Manager

This is a great resort..great beach and staff..however..it seems that management is wanting to make this sort of a retreat facility..no TV's and only 2 places to get WiFi...the WiFi doesnt work in either of these 2 places. I am very cool with no TV..but if you need to connect while on vacation then this will be a problem for you...

Room Tip: select one of the rooms that was redone after the storm

If you're looking to totally relax and unwind completely from go-go-go of work and life, then Mahekal is the way to go! I always leave feeling so refreshed and rejuvenated. It truly is Paradise. The staff are a huge reason this place is fabulous - they remember your names and are so sweet and care to make your stay a great experience. Boli is one of the managers who has been there almost 20 years now, he is a great host and so hard working. The beach is gorgeous, the food is absolutely delicious. We love the Garden View area in the back, so quiet and private. The grounds are always pristine and manicured to perfection. This was our 2nd visit and we will of course be back again. It's a getaway unlike any I've experienced before. We do not watch TV, check email, use social media, cell phones, nothing- just completely disconnect. Mahekal is far form the party scene of Cancun or other large resorts in the area, it's a quiet, tropical paradise. We wake up with the sun and fall asleep by 10 pm each night! Absolute relaxation. I miss it already...

Room Tip: We have stayed in the Garden View Palapas section all the way in the back of the resort. They are qu...

if you prefer a smaller resort with a beachy vibe, this is your place. the villas are super charming with mexican tile walk in showers and thatched roofs. walkable to plenty of services and they can arrange transportation to tulum, or wherever you want to go.

I spent a week at Mahekal Beach Resort on my Honeymoon and I can say that our experience was kind of disappointing.

First, we had booked an Ocean View Suite and that's where our disappointment begins. Mostly of rooms considered as "Ocean View" definitely aren't "Ocean View" and should be considered as Garden View. The beach is far from the room and you almost can't see it. Furthermore, the rooms are very simple with poor furniture and no Wi-Fi. We complained about that and they offered us an upgrade for a better room with no cost. A good point was the room cleanliness, that has always been perfect.

The dinner was another point. It starts at 7PM, but if you arrive by 8:30PM some choices of the Menu (which aren't many) won't be available anymore. Further, the menu was the same every two night.

The location near the centre is great and the staff was always very receptive.

Room Tip: Be careful with the Ocean Views rooms which may not have really an Ocean View. Penthouses are grea...

Thank you for sharing with us your experience about your Honeymoon stay.
We are sorry to hear your disappointment about the view of your room. When the resort is not full and we have the chance, we gladly offer an alternative room for our guests. I am happy to see that we could do that in your case as well. I would like to mention here that however all of our Ocean view rooms have a view to the ocean, some units have more than the others, due to the location of the actual room. We receive a lot of positive feedback from our guests about the distance to the sea, as even the Garden View rooms that are located the furthest are only 800 feet from the shore.
Regarding our dinner, all guests should have the same options until dinner finishes. Your experience must have been an exception. For this we do apologize. We are going to work on this in order to avoid the same situation in the future.
We do hope that beside these factors you returned home with good memories and you may visit us again to celebrate your future marriage anniversaries at Mahekal Beach Resort.

Best regards,
