My husband and i got married at mahekal beach resort in February 2014. We travelled from Australia. We never been to Mexico but were drawn to it by the fantastic diving, beautiful beaches and the local food. After a lot of researching and googling resorts in Playa Del Carmen, we knew we found the right resort. The resort itself is not a high rise all-inclusive building with corridors and elevators. (Which is what we wanted to steer clear from). There is also no tv or wifi in the room- which was bliss. It really sets the beachside relaxed resort feel which is what we wanted. We had an amazing ocean front room with thatched roof and were only metres from the water. Really felt like we were in paradise. From the moment i was liaising with the resort wedding coordinator, i knew our elopement was in good hands. She was extremely helpful and thorough and was the reason that our wedding was a perfect day for us. Everything about our stay at Mahekal was amazing and perfect. All the staff are incredible. From the very helpful concierge who assisted us on daily basis, to the restaurant and bar staff, the whole experience was 10 out of 10. The resort restaurant makes amazing food! We could not fault the food in the whole 9ngts we stayed there. It was always delicious. The whole experience at mahekal was one we will never forget and one day we hope to return to this beautiful paradise. Thankyou Mahekal xx

Room Tip: Ocean front casita. We had room 4C. The room is massive. Private plunge pool. Metres from the water

1st visit to Playa del carmen in 12 years. Way busier then we wanted. We were lucky to have 10 days at the Mahekal. Looks like what a hotel on the beach in Hawaii would of looked like 50 years ago. Beautiful beach. Palapas and cabanas. NO HIGH RISE or TV's. Great staff, and the half board food program is a good deal. Breakfast on the deck over looking the beach can't be beat. Way better than the same old buffet at all inclusive's. You can trade your dinner for a lunch if the menu that night isn't what you want. The best part is you can walk a few blocks to 5th Ave. if you need to shop or go out. Right up the street is a pizza place called PIOLA. Good food and a basil Martini that is awesome. The owners of Mahekal have purchased the adjacent property formerly Las Palapas. They will be doing alot of improvements. Hopefully they don't lose charm of what they have. They have excellent hard working staff. They work many hours and many days straight and seem to always take care of the guests with a smile.

We had a great stay at Mahekal overall and would happy to recommend it, however there are a few things that could be improved.

      What we liked the most:
      - the lovely staff. Everybody was super nice and accomodating. It was easy to find great nannies for our baby (especially Ana)
      - the overall environment. The view is beautiful and the property is very well maintained.
      - the new rooms. We stayed in one of the recently renovated ocean view in Caribe and it was great (clean, comfortable bedding, AC and fan working very well).

      What could be improved:
      - food!! we are foodies and were most often disapointed by the food. The worst are definitely dinners (the buffet is not good at all, I left hungry once as there was nothing appealing to eat) and since it is half-board, I would definitely having lunch instead. Breakfast is ok (large choice of eggs, and fresh fruits). Lunch is ok but it gets complicated when you are in the "half board option". We have already given our recommandations to the manager who hopefully will take them into consideration (the issue is that none of the waiter seems to know what you are entitled to eat with the half board option, some say just one dish, with some you can order whatever you want, and some say some of this but none of that).
      - no phone in the room to ring reception. So you always have to walk there. While I understand the concept of no technology in the room, it would be nice to have a way to contact the front desk.
      - check-in was a bit messy. As we were travelling with our young baby for the first time, we had sent a few emails to request a cot, and a fridge. When we arrived, they had not allocated a room for us so they "suggested" an upgrade to a penthouse which proved to be very inconvenient with a young crawling baby. They then attributed us to a very nice room which corresponded to what we have requested but when we got there, obviously there was no baby cot and we had to wait for quite a bit to put our very sleepy baby to bed (the fridge only arrived the day after, after us walking to reception 3 times-as there is no phone in the room to call them). All in all, it was not that bad but it did felt that we were not expected while we had sent our requests to have a smooth arrival.
      - as written in previous reviews, most days it smells like sewage on the beach, but I doubt the hotel is directly responsible for that
      - beach service and activities are lacking (there is no "beach club" where one could walk up for drinks, etc)
      - yoga was non-existent.or badly organized. I tried to take the class that is supposed to be offered a couple of times but it never took place, and the information were different depending on whether you were asking at Palapas hotel or Mahekal.

Room Tip: 13 C is very nice as it is a single unit (no room above), so you are both on the ground floor and have a palapas roof. Overall most Ocean front and ocean view in Caribe have been recently renovated

Beautiful resort with great staff. The food was good, and the location was incomparable. So unbelievably gorgeous. If you enjoy silence at night bring earplugs. Playa del Carmen has a nightclub and the bass beat goes through the resort. No phone in the room is the only downside. Poolside partiers making lots of noise til 3:30 am made for a rough night, and could have been dealt with by a call to the front desk if we had a phone.
