We were recommended this hostel by another traveller and we loved it. We had hoped on getting a private room but they were all booked out (we didn't book in advance, just rocked up) so we opted for a 6 bed dorm with air-con and private bathroom (M$170/night). The room was spotless and quiet at all times as it was set well back from the street and the pool/bar area (though others we met who had front rooms said they were very noisy, so ask for a room at the back).
The pool and bar area looked great but we didn't use them.....too busy out discovering the joys of Playa Del Carmen. The location was perfect, only 1.5 short blocks from the beach and half a black from the main strip where all the action is. The hostel also has 2 free computers connected to the internet for guest use.

Gotta love the pool on the roof, with the bar right beside it. Great place to lounge out on sunny days. There's usually a good crew hanging around the hostel. Single rooms are pretty good. You're right beside the centre of Playa del Carmen and the nightclub district is only a few minutes walk away. The beach too is only 2 or 3 blocks away. One negative would be the fact that there is a construction site opposite the hostel, so if you're in the dorms, you're likely to be waking up to pneumatic drills if you're there for the next few months, but that's nothing a few beers the previous night wouldn't sort out!

Hostel Rio Playa was recommended by guests I met staying in Cancun, and it had received a good rating on hostelworld, so I chose to stay here, as I was a solo traveler. The location is great, one block from the beach and it is very close to the supermarket, clubs and 5th Ave. Most of the staff were helpful, however the 14 bed dorms got pretty crowded and messy during the day and the mattress are in dire need of replacement (I could feel every spring!). Dont hold out too much for breakfast. Its probably worth sleeping in after a late night clubbing than waking up for white bread and bitter coffee. This hostel is a great place to party, but a few small improvements (i.e. emptying the fridge once a month!! and putting more than one bathroom in a 14 bed dorm).

we were going to an another hostel but they were closed for renovation. so we end up in hostel rio playa. very friendly and helpful staff. we stayed in the dormitory, which are good size with bathroom ensuite and air conditioned. two blocks away from the beach and one from 5th avenue where all restaurants and shops are. nice bar on the terrace, but horrible swimming pool( 50 cm deep full of germs).

Loved this hostel!!! The rooftop is awesome, has a small pool, really cheap bar (with free drinks for girls from 11-12) and really really great staff! I stayed in the girls dorm and the room was clean, safe and beds were comfortable. Close to the beach and walking distance to bus terminals. I would highly recommend staying here. Oh and also had aircon which is a big plus in playa del carmen!
